Title: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on February 22, 2009, 03:38:22 PM
Was a busy boy this weekend. With the help of a couple friends and my son, we made a ton of progress on the gathering of parts we collected for this. This is the 1978 Sleekcraft Rebel that became my second, now first, boat. Gotta get it wet so I can get the Saguaro back in the garage.

Here we were when we started, blown engine, mostly complete, though

Not my house, guy I bought it from. Notice he has a coffee, not a beer!

Then I finished up this for it last week.

Out with the old, in with the new. Haven't yet torn into the old mill, but I'm sure I'm going to find a mess. Previous owner told me the new engine ran 20 minutes before BANG. Seems the builder and installer ran no sort of pressure releif nor o/b dump and all water ran through the new headers.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2210053.jpg&hash=ad8718e484b20a965d7223bdd83ef7cc2064bb35)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2210052.jpg&hash=3e2cfc455886910d7c3f4051e712200a1c558f47)

And in with the new!

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220054-1.jpg&hash=baaa3dc4066da2916543c8cf92ac8042f4f94487)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220055-1.jpg&hash=4f2c1677b57b56c86f86c12876b8bafd876d0f3f)

Small problem with the new Milodon pan that I missed was the rod welded across under the old pan connecting the right and left motor mounts. I was concerned about cleqarance with the pan anyway, but when the engine sat on something with 3 inches left to drop, well, imagine my surprise!.

this was the culprit and the instrument of it's destruction!

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220060-1.jpg&hash=4a0ad43e69f55738dfc91fbadcc8e4377fc9761d)

We'll add in a new, custom crossover with it's own plates between the stringers this week. I don't see the need for it, myself, makes no sense from a physics standpoint, but what do I know?

Anyone help me with this? World's smallest electric fuel pump? Don't see THAT feeding this thing! If anything, seems it would restrict the mechanical I'm gonna run for right now.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220072.jpg&hash=f0a66ab8f8be8c7b4ae482ebb2c06a29b67ada26)

Also, there's GOT to be a better way to come off this tube from the JE pump. A Compression to AN fitting? I plan to run braided S/S lines eventually, might have to bite the bullet and do it now.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220071.jpg&hash=81213d82700126a86547d0b1230bbe2cca54e885)

So here's where it's at now. Not bad for a day and a half, really.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220061.jpg&hash=66bccc7f6f64a79864959e2c093ca3d1e606dad4)

Still got to plump the thing, looking forward to a box of goodies from Tom, et al to start that, wire it, and plump/mount the remote filter assembly and Oil cooler assembly

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220073.jpg&hash=139e3adaeb1b2a0050263d97844c45aaa44a89a6)

As far as wiring, here's what it has..

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220064.jpg&hash=66db2f4846e293c21987ec29b9df67bd4bfbeb94)

and Had, (Took tons of pictures before I tore anything apart, but now I see the colors didn't come out good so STILL gonna be some guessing and tracing)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2210044.jpg&hash=16f63d99fee42a9eff4b431939eb251a707ffa81)

Ignition is last, and a place to mount it all, but here's what's going in..

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220070.jpg&hash=85b161775c60432b8e9fc43183410ec8325b89b6)

Want to do front of engine cover/ beer holder like 2sav has on his 'Beaner, we're working on designing something, maybe carpeted for now, but will be a place to mount the Mallory msd unit and coil, possibly the oil filter housing as well. News at 11 on that

I wanna say that fuel delio is an old style selector valve  :-\

Nice progress there Ray!  8)

BTW, you need to hang a big 'ol cowbell to the bow eye and paint the pump titty pink  ;)

lmao, my dad is checking his "treasure" chests, some time ago he had an old, lever operated horn from a truck he bought that came from New Mexico. Went Moooooooooo! when you pulled this rope routed through the firewall. Claims he still has it somewhere, lol

looking good ray i just spent 8 hours on someone elses boat...hats off to the helpers and son...that dealio is a fuel selector switxh not a fuel pump nor pressure dealio...it allows you to swap tanks...perfectly harmless if it is working

IR,
That thing you are trying to figure out is a fuel tank selector
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on February 22, 2009, 07:11:57 PM
OK, Fuel tank selector, check! Now to figure out which tank is which on the dash switch. The one with the sender or the one without, lol. Things keep getting interesting!

Thanks Guys!

if it is wired right, when you change tanks, the gauge will read that tank's level...

Yeah, haven't removed the seats to see if both tanks have senders or not. Don't intend to either. Guess I'll find out when I fill the thing up.

Did have this thought tho, some insight how my lil brain works, or doesn't, as the case may be. I always thought these things sucked from both tanks to keep somewhat of a weight balance. If you run one tank down to say, 1/4 or less then do you have to have the fat guy in the back move to the other side of the boat to keep it from flipping over? Might be even worse if the fat guy is the driver! :screwy:

We'll see, I doubt it. One can hope tho. Was actually hoping to get it running off the hose on Thursday tho. Still need some really stupid stuff, however. Can you beleive out of two boats with the same engine I can only find 4 water pump bolts? Noone ever heard of Ziplock Bags? lol. Gonna hit Tom up to see if he has any layin around. He's going to round up a goodie box for me, and I know it'll be the best deal on the west coast!

Got home from work and this is what I built:

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2230076.jpg&hash=ca9de251e3fabb2aadf0629ddd52a2d50322f96f)

Hose adapter, the ball valve, then two T's. First one for the Pressure releif Tom's sending ( I think), else I need to locate one, second is the water split for the engine. I want to run one side, Short side, through the oil cooler first, though.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2220073.jpg&hash=139e3adaeb1b2a0050263d97844c45aaa44a89a6)

Maybe I shouldn't, should run the O/B dump line from the intake through it first.

ray it isnt too bad, but helps to have another helper...looks like your gonna be doing alot of under the dash and what not...also someone will most likely give ya the link for wiring a jet boat...very good info
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on February 26, 2009, 04:51:39 PM
Yeah, I looked at that. Wiring the engine side, it's a great thread, helps even though I'm going all Mallory on it. The Mallory manuals help with that tho. Between the two I should be OK.

My problem is hooking up what I took off from what went to the dash. As you say, just requires a helper. My son is elected! I just want to make sure noone wired the thing wrong to begin with, much like they plumbed it wrong to begin with. I'm surprised I can't find a thread with basic wiring for the ignition switch, tach and guages to the engine. Would help to double check myself.

Aiight, took a couple days off from it. Actually, no, been piddling, really, all the small crap. But today after work started on the front engine cover I needed. Couldn't have me stomping the thing and tossing one of the kids into the engine/bilge area to get wrapped up on the crank pulley or worse. So heres what I started building.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP2280081.jpg&hash=5cb84e0b8f0a302651aaf91262725af0521c07b5)

Just a start, gorilla glued and air nailed what I have, but fits great. Once we get the rest nailed together with some suport brackets, I'll get more pics of it and of it in the boat. The top board is planned to have beer holders like 2Sav's beaner has. the angles down will be more or less armrests with maybe another beer holder in each side.

Plus it gives me someplace to mount all the ignition stuff and remote oil filter array. Dunno yet if I'm just gonna carpet it or have it upholstered, but just gonna be coated with resin and rattle canned for now. Gotta get the thing to Mead!

Was questioned why I felt this necessary. Can tell you this. The kids are important to me. That, and me being the inventive person I am, this didn't meet the approval of anyone who saw it. (damn, shoulda been easy)

And a new SCJ Polished Stainless Alternator mount (Took a little hilljack engineering to make it work with my alternator. I must have a strange alt, will change it out later)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3020084.jpg&hash=0247bf7fa9451e45aaa52ceeaccc2ce8fe2969f6)

Now to get the front cover on, finish plumbing, then finish the wiring. Good thing I'm off tomorrow. If all goes well, should be able to start it off the hose! Don't worry, the drive line is not in it yet. That part may be yet a fiasco putting that bitch back in. Was put on with what musta been a 200lb impact wrench. Broke 2  7/16"  wrenches getting it off the original engine! Hope it don't need to be torqued THAT tight!)

Any one know why 2 BBF UNilite  dizzy's have different size gears? I figure one or the other will fit, once I clean up the Comp 9000, but can anyone explain this?

Yup, 15 teeth on both. Leave it to me to find something like this! I guess I'm just gonna hafta see which one fits after I prime it this afternoon. Kinda scarey though if you ask me.

Yeah, tis what I planned. Only 1 roll pin. But gotta try the bigger gear and see if it will even go in first. If it goes in, it's the one!Planned to run the comp 9000 so a switch would be needed. Just wanted to know if anyone else ever saw this on BBF engines before. 1 is a Harmin marine 460 from 1976 and the other is whoever Sleekcraft used in 1978.

OK, got the goodies Tom sent in the boat. Hadda get a few more things, and a tap to tap out the intake for the header water line. But I think I'm plumbed! (I stress the THINK). Wiring is another matter I don't even want to get into. Gonna be a longer process than I thought on that. Maybe I can get that resolved tomorrow morning. But, and maybe Tom or 2Sav will chime in here, the Pressure releif valve Tom sent was backed all the way out. Can't really read the markings and graduations on it, but it's supposed to be 15-175 psi or something. All the way out means 15? And should I run another ball valve on the o/b dump from the Tstat housing? Also, should I, and where do you get, a water pressure guage? Have room on the Tstat cover for one if needed.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3030086.jpg&hash=90ff53d4bf724482c48f781150b9ff1384be62bd)

Wanted to start it on the hose today, but my Oil didn't show. (Ordered Joe Gibbs BR oil for Sunday, then HR oil for after that)

no the smaller gear...once again im thinking either one would probably work...why would a bbf gear not work anywhere from a 351 cleveland to 429/460 are interchangeable...i beleive the fe blocks are different, but if it came out of a 460 why wouldnt it work on another...unless there is some "special cam" out there

Post by: Nick on March 03, 2009, 09:17:11 PM
Ray,

The plumbing thing aint that hard, judging from all the other things have got done thus far it should be a cake walk for you. I just did mine for my 460 a couple weeks ago, just keep in mind, it is a much more simple design than you would think.

In answer to your question though, YES run a ball valve on your overboard dump line. Reason being: if you 'choke' your water inlet line to your motor to build temp (pretty normal thing to do right?) and you dont have a ball valve on your dump line your headers will starve for water because the now lower amount of water running through your motor is going out your dumpline....SO, if had a ball valve on your dump line you could 'choke' that and put more water back into your headers.

Does that even make sense? I swear it does to me. Maybe I'm losing it....either way, you'll get it, but the ball valve on the dump line is a must. My $.02 is in now...

No, It makes sense Nick. Kinda what I was thinking anyway. I tend to over analyze...... go figure after my last thread on the subject................ the physics of it all. Example, given what I have, I used the O/B dump from the bilge pump for the pressure valve outlet. Then drilled the new one in next to it, and y-ed in the bilge pump and regular o/b dump. I'm thinking I may well pump water back through the bilge pump, lol. Need to drill another o/b dump to make me happy I guess.  Got too much money invested in this to trash the engine. (And NOW I bought a truck to haul the damn thing!)

Given the same number of teeth, yes, but the diameter is my concern.  The Dizzy has to mesh with the cam gear, no? If the diameter is too small, no meshy, since it's a solid rotating piece held in a concentric circle by two points. As is the cam , held in a concentric circle by 5 points.  SAvvy my quagmire on this? ???

I know how to solve it, for me, just was wondering if anyone had seen it before. Might be one of those trhings to tuck away, might be important someday.

Ray your plumbing "looks" ok to me but I have a couple questions, call me (I'm on the road this am ) re the Dizzy I'll check with Josh and get back to you ! didn't notice is this a roller or flat tappet cam deal ? Tom
Btw the pressure reg is between 12 and 15 psi all the way out , thats where i would leave it to start ' also I agree that a "dump line" needs a lever ball to create "resistance" to water flow , not always needed but usefull under some circumstances Tom

It's a flat tappet 305 Degree deal Tom. Crane Roller Roockers, though. I'm pretty sure I got the oil figured out, after a couple emails to Joe Gibbs Racing.

I'll call you a lil later Tom. On my way out the door to pick up my new truck ;D Well, new to me anyway. Will be nice to have something that can haul this cow. Captain Bovine,
Not sure if you mean the entire hitch system or just the slide in part with the ball and such, if it's the latter you can get them @ Home Cheapo, Kragen, Wally World, just about anywhere. U-Haul is actually pretty good on thier prices for hitch setups, I had them do my 98 Chevy in '02 for right around $500 installed with wiring kit.

Keep on keepin on.............

Thanks Joe. Did that. Can buy one locally cheaper I think and put it on myself. Just thought maybe someone had one laying around. Not a big deal, but need it before next weekend obviously!

Should be ready to fire the boat Tomorrow! Then to water test it and break it in. (The guy from Joe Gibbs told me to run their BR oil for 2 hours or so then drain it and put in the HR oil). We're thinking of dragging it to Saguaro Lake Sunday. We'll see how that goes! Finishing up the wiring right now. Taking a beer break.

What grease is used in the pump? It's already set up with zerk fittings, so grease must be what's in there! So I need to make sure that's full!

Other than that, ready for Mead next weekend!

Allright. I have such a raging woodie I can hardly contain myself. She FIRED! Filled the block with water, didn't bother with running on the the hose as I didn't plan to run her for more than a few seconds, but she FIRED! And scared the livin SHEIT outta my neghbor (Not to mention me) who was spraying weeds in the yard beside my garage. Also scared the dog, who was inside at the time, half to death too I guess. Boat was in the garage, so it kinda amplified things a tad.

She sounds good, gonna need final timing with a light (Gonna wait for Mead to do that once I get it in the water), and probably some carb tuning, hopefully the guys coming to Mead are willing to pitch in. This Marine carb is different than anything I'm used to, and at that has been years.

Some minor problem reared it's ugly head. The Oil pressure guage is like this. Don't remember it being like this before, but could be. I think it has to do with my wiring. Honestly.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FP3090091.jpg&hash=2c0ec34475f717a554b5b3f4f9cbfb6d8c30455e)

Also, and may be important, alt guage, everything is a lil kooked, but the ignition switch fell apart on me trying to crank the thing, so I used a screwdriver in the switch when all the guts to the mech came out. That might also have something to do with it. Gonna swing by Tempe Marine tomorrow and get a new switch. And life jackets, and check into ejection seats. This thing doesn't sound the least bit docile!

Hopefully the guages are ok. Might go to Autozone and pick up a cheapo three guage set and mount it in the rear somewhere just to be safe.

AND...I need to clean up this mess of wiring.....

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FP3090092.jpg&hash=de4d9934267e558355947cbf5a7a0b206bdfb133)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FP3090093.jpg&hash=8c210a1380f0f40c1f5807cf76a55df44905db66)

Couldn't wait to fire her, and needed access to the crank. Now that I know it's close, I can put in the custom, termite food engine cover I built. Then mount the coil, Hyfire , oil cooler and remote oil filter stuff.  The wiring I can clean up, shorten, etc and wire loom it with split loom and spiral wrap. Should be OK there. but Man!! Ready for Mead, well sorta. Would be better to be running a proven boat, but this may be even more fun!

BTW, It has an Electric choke on the carb. Should I just remove the choke plate and shaft? Or can I simply run a wire to it and choke it with a switch? Always used Mechanicals b4. Could be why she didn't want to stay running.

Dude that's awsome, congrats...BTW Me thinks you need to give that oil p gauge a percussive maintenance, looks like the sender wire was shorted and pinned the needle, tap on it to realease it and disconnect the "s" wire and try again, probably the wrong sender attatched to the gauge (he says without actually looking at it  :sly: ).

Congrats again on the success.  ;D

;D Thanks Guys! We'll see about hauling ass or not. If what I heard when she fired, did it 3 times actually, is any indication, I mighta gone a lil too far. Might need to step up the impeller fairly quick. Tom Might be seeing a boat in his near future for a stainless one. :sly:

Sounded Right to me about the guage, about the "Rap" id realignment, but now I just dun trust it, so I convinced myself to run a second for time being. I'm using the original sender from the other engine, so I doubt that's it. More beleived my wiring. Though the Tach and amp guage WERE working before the switch took a dump.

Tom's sending me another o/b dump so I don't fill the boat up by T-ing into the bilge pump. Saw THAT problem immediately when I turned on the hose to fill the block. Also, when I did so, pumped antifreeze all through my cul-de-sac. From the cam break in must be. Maybe I'll have less outdoor cats................

Any ideas on pumping the Break In oil out of this thing at Mead? gonna have to do it there, and obviouosly can't lift the engine there. Nor do I wanna. Well I COULD, but I think they'd frown on that at the marina. But I do need to change the oil after a couple of hours run time or so. I can supply a container. Took 11 quarts of the stuff after priming the engine to get it level. What a waste of 90 bucks! Well, not if the engine LASTS!!!!!!

Ray, awhile back I had the same situation come up. I just grabed an extra electric fuel pump and reduced the line size down so that it would fit down the dip stick tube. When I say reduced, I mean I put the 3/8 line on it and then shoved a smaller line inside of it, and it worked great.

Norco is a small town between Riverside and Orange Co.  It is mostly a horse community but there were several large dairy farms between Norco and Chino that give them a special oder and many cow referrences.

You now know what a Norco is  ;D

Horse Town U.S.A.        Where the official city bird is the Fly and the farm animals outnumber the people.  Where you get a $$$ ticket for parking on a horsetrail, the bars have hitching posts, and the tap water is a delicious shade of brown.  ;D

Well there is Lake Norconian but it is small and "off limits".
Oh wait, there is the mighty Santa Ana river right there too.  Uhhh well ya probably don't want to run a boat on that either.   But Norco is only 30 minutes from Elsinore.   Gee ain't life just peachy around here?

Ray,

My friend used to be the mayor there, my friend used to own the bar the Hitching Post and yet another friend owns All American Trailers on 6th St.  They are also very patriotic as the center stripes down 6th St is Red, White and Blue instead of yellow or white.

Boat with choke = what
Thanks Steve! Removed the choke, kinda, and now starts easier and idles like a champ at 800 rpm!  :banghead: Why didn't I think of that?

Can't get the choke butterfly out without removing the curved vent tube on the marine carb. Any ideas on how it comes out? or do I break out the Sawzall again?

The vent tubes are normally just lightly pressed in, You can pull it out and reinstall it after removing the choke plate.

Now, if Holley has started using epoxy and you break something, you didn't hear it from me  >:D

Yeah, and I will. seems a handy device anyway. Just under the gun right now. I'll see what I can scare up at the local parts stores today. Maybe someone has one off the shelf.

Might hafta resort to my store (HD) for some adapters and tubing. Wanted to stay away from there on vacation though, ;D

Do you think I'm OK using the current CA registration (good thru 09) or do I need to swing by the Fish and Game and put AZ registration on it? Was wondering about that when I transferred titles the other day. Then forgot. Alzheimer's is such a fun affliction.

Sounds kinda cheap, but why pay to register it when the PO already did?

Just pretend I'm testing it out before I buy it, right?

Also changed up on the scoop deal. The other was for the dual quad tunnel that will go on it later. So I picked up this modified one for the time being. Will work ok for now, and I'll save it for use on the Yellow Submarine, which is next.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3120099.jpg&hash=1e1306ec7f672dc5098e20441bf1e99836209f43)

Shoulda seen me trying to put THIS nut on and tighten the Fokker at 6 am!  My neighbors learned a few new words. PO of the scoop drilled a hole through the top, I assume to make it easier, that was nowhere near the center. I should weld it up and have it re coated in the future. Prolly yellw considering where it's going eventually.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3120098.jpg&hash=ee833afb52a7899d1d5d7d43d9f5c99192fa2c1b)

Also made this lil dealio out of aluminum strapping. Hopefully it saves me from the signiature crooked scoop of Omar's

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3120100.jpg&hash=ece550af888e926e9110fa28bdd7611420ba9023)

All that's left for tomorrow's trip is another coat of resin on the engine cover, rattle can it, install it and tighten up the wiring.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3120101.jpg&hash=b0e8b92be09aa2df15e3140a7f7a3a77846ecac8)

And no, the Pallet is not the engine cover, 2sav.

Well, yeah, that woulda been easy, were it not for the fact that the scoop and flame arrestor need to go on TOGETHER at the SAME TIME. And a wingnut would never clear between the top of the flame arrestor and the bottom of the inside top of the scoop.

This is how this thing was modified, I guess. No forethought as to assembling it easy. Going to fix that before it's next rebirth. But no way to tighten the nuts behind the carb if you remove the air cleaner base from the scoop!  :banghead: Thought of , and tried, that,  ;D

But it's on and secure, I happy! ;D

Alright. Been awhile now detoxing from the trip!

The Lake Mead test worked out well, given some near major catastrophes, we got back, boat ran well, considering the carb was untouched and nearly new, and we never did use Crewcheifs timing light on it. Now I'm getting her ready for a run in the morning at Saguaro with my uncle, a real Holley guy, to see if we can get the timiong down, and just to get some more run time on it. Everything looks good, all evidence of the Mead Milkshake is gone (Changed the oil again after we got home, lord at $125 a case this Joe Gibbs stuff is getting EXPENSIVE, cost more than any single part I put on the thing so far, but worth it in the end). Retightened the oil pan, where I beleive the water came from, from nearly flooding the thing to the bottom of the lake, cleaned out the bilge (and the beer cans). Tomorrow afternoon gonna pull the corks on the block and start the install of this

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3190143.jpg&hash=ef1588b0ddd53132e2b8e6ce8844045df3d01420)

The 750 is the twin to the one on the boat now that I ran at Mead. I figure get my uncle loose on that one, then switch them and do the same for the second, should get me close to running them together. At least in theory.... More likely is retuning over and over again to get them right. 2 Vac secondary 750's on this thing is WAY over carbing the engine from the standard formula, but given what peformance I saw at Mead, I think it will be just about right on THIS engine. Besides, It's what I have in the garage.

Finish that, Maybe an electric fuel pump system and adding in the oil cooler/remote filter dealio, and get the engine cover upholstered by my overworked and overbooked contact, I think this boat is as far as I want to take it right now. Will follow up with pics on them as they happen. Then it's onto the Yellow Submarine. I promise, more pics of every aspect of THAT build, which my PLAN is to be much milder than this thing turned out to be. (What a surprise THAT was to see this thing come out of the gate like that, need to find out what's in this pump!) Then again, any boat painted like this one had BETTER run or go home and graze.

I owe a ton of thanks to EVERYONE on this site for making this happen. You all contributed, be it little or a lot, but some names like Crewcheif, Tom at JBP, Brad, Omar, 2Sav, Skip, Chromey, Joe (Cowboy), Forked up,  and Nordi come to mind, and I know I'm missing a lot of you. Don't take it personally.

As this thread closes, with maybe a few more posts from me and some others, I'm proud of the result, and I hope it serves to help out anyone else working on or building one of these things! What a great hobby!

Ray

PS Still haven't had any name airbrushed on, but common comments seem to suggest simply "Mooooo", even as clever as all the suggestions were.

Pretty much what I was thinking, Glen. And you're one of the one's I did not mention, sorry.  Gotta thank 2SAv for the 'Choke, what's a Choke?' tip too. Saved my ass right there!

Gotta tell you though, first couple times I rolled out of the marina with the thing, and bear in mind I've never driven these things before, as Crewcheif and Mrs. Crewcheif can attest first hand, I rolled into the throttle pretty easy only to have the bow stick up in my face for awhile until she decided to come up on plane. Kinda scarey not seeing in front of you. Learned to whack the throttle about 3/4 and the thing would launch out of the water and be right on plane, albeit around 30 or so MPH,(more than that according to my son who was incharge of the GPS) in less than a second it seemed.

Biggest problem I had was the carb hesitating allowing me to do that, but the power was there, none the less.

I simply removed it, no need. boat does NOT need a choke, and as I think about it, unsure why it ever would.

OK, OK, Theres more in the Family Event at Lake Mead thread, thanks to Chromey and Crewcheif, but here she is in the garage. Shoulda took some outside. I'll try and do that tomorrow for you guys. Also plan to post the pics once the wiring is cleaned up and the tunnel is installed. Tried the Bimini today, dun like it. Gonna save it for the Yellow Submarine I think. Just doesn't go with this boat, and I don't imagine it will stay on this thing very long at speed anyway. The intake combo on it now will go on the other one, with an 850, once I get that far.

Haven't even cleaned it up since Mead!

Well, the tunnel's going on Tuesday, if I planned my week right. Also lined up a guy to permanently name the boat. Any last minute suggestions? So far I'm tossed between, "That Damn Cow Boat", "Udder Nonsense" (Udder Mayhem is growing on me), and just plain "Mooooo". There's also "A Mooooving Experience", "Moo-Haul", I'm worrying myself more over this stuff than anything else on the boat.

Anyone find themselves in or near the PHX area and need this sort of thing done, I can hook you up. The guy works for me sooo, I know where to find him. Does FANTASTIC work, all freehand. He makes all of our signs for the store now (Not that he likes it, but....)

Joe

Wellll, I kinda forgot to tighten 1 hose clamp, apparently, the hose that goes from the front of the intake to the ball valve before the header T. When I romped on it pretty hard chasing Crewcheif and Nordi's friend Jay, it came off, and the faster I went, the more water I was pumping into the back of the boat, thank goodness the kids noticed a lot of water rolling around their feet, problem was, I was in the middle of the lake and went ashore PRONTO. Took the bilge pump awhile to pump it out, lol. At least an easy fix, but she was REALLY full of water, pretty darn close if you ask me,  :banghead:

Blued the headers a bit, as they were running dry, obviously, and scared the crap out of everyone involved, lol. Learned a valuable lesson there. Double and triple check everything BEFORE you get in the middle of the lake and run it like an idiot! Boat ran great the rest of the time, save for a little leaky water outlet cover that we fixed while there.

All in the interests of learning! It's funny now, but wasn't at the time.

OK, Problem. Started disassembling the top end to install the intake, have it half tore apart,

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3240035.jpg&hash=b71c754581ee34c98142efd591eeaacf9aefc2bd)

Started putting new carb studs in the intake, set up both carbs, and the ONLY way they will fit is with the fuel inlets and throttle assemblies on opposite sides. never seen this before. :banghead: Seen sideways mounted, but that's not possible without 2" carb spacers :screwy: Something I am not gonna do.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3240036.jpg&hash=eadf4512bd26ea9e4bb18b8fb99a47a5278c0b72)

Any suggestions? Looks like I'm gonna need one wild ass throttle linkage for it, or new carbs

Any way to reverse everything on one of these Marine Carbs? I know it used to be done on DP's, but I beleive these are SP's. Still should be able to swap the bowls end for end and get the fuel line on the same side, at least, but what about the throttle shafts?

Gonna be bad ass when it's on tho

I don't think you can go to the single feed bowls (would give clearance needed) with those bodies.

The only thing I have seen that works is mounting sideways  :banghead:

You could try to fabricate a dual cable system (one from the front and one from the rear)  :screwy:

Outstanding, texting my machinist brother as we speak. Maybe some heim joints and a bearinged shaft running between or behind them. The fuel lines are not a problem, really, the linkage is gonna look kinda frankensteinish I have a feeling. Damn me for sticking to my guns on this! :banghead:

A different brand manifold might have a wider center to center allowing the carbs to fit end to end.

Its been years since I've done any research on manifolds.
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on March 24, 2009, 07:45:38 PM
I'm not entirely sure even a manifold change will help. I think the problem lies in the fact that these are marine carbs, single pump, dual feed. Gonna wait and see if my bro has time to machine a couple of billet brackets tonight or tomorrow. I think I've got it worked out in my lil brain. As far as it working? well, another matter. There's enough room between them to run a shaft, and that can be mounted on brackets on either side bolted to the bolts holding the upper/lower intake together. Make a shaft for between them and some heim joints, viola. Gonna depend on whether he can make them or not.

Gonna drop one of 'em back on for now, until I get this worked out.  Don't wanna lose lake time on this.

OK, Ray ray ray....Just BS'n ya about the reverse kit. You're gonna hafta "A" go with smaller carbs, Or "B" go sideways. They have some really cool linkage and fuel line setups on ebay. I have some smaller Holleys that fit end to end #1850's, 500cfm I think. Also your manifold may be too old to have come drilled for sideways action. Manifolds are pretty much a standard center to center, I think it's like 9 5/8.
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........

I figured out you were Terry, took  some Captain to reread those and go.....Ohhhhhhhh............. ;D

(The Left handed thing was funny though, I gotta admit) :banghead:

Yeah, I agree, smaller single feeds would be easier, but I'm not gonna let this little thing beat me. I think it can be done and work properly. If not, well, I been wrong before and will again. Sideways will not work without 2" carb spacers, and at that, none of the bolt holes line up, so not just a spacer, but an adapter of some sort, if they even make it. The manifold is new, but don't know year of manufacture.

Besides, looks kinda cool with the choke horns facing each other. >:D

Anyone got an 850 or 950 laying around in good shape? I'm thinking I want to run one on it for now while I work out this WY-AND HOW deal.

Ray, take a gasket from one of THESE carbs and lay it on the manifold and make sure the holes are big enough, then turn it sideways and see if theres a nuff meat to, or if it is drilled, to go sideways.

You could always use dominator float bowls that have fuel inlet fittings on both sides...

But you would still have to turn them sideways  :banghead:

Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on March 25, 2009, 06:19:23 AM
It is drilled for sideways mounting, Terry, I was trying to avoid that if at all possible, because to do it, it will require carb spacers at least 1 1/2" thick. I guess the simplest thing to do is to do just that and a sideways throttle linkage. :banghead:

Gonna require a ladder to put the scoop on the thing, but I gotta do it!

Ray
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........

Why does it require spacers?
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on March 25, 2009, 09:10:57 AM
The throttle plates on the carbs and the linkages going to the booster pump. Here's a pic of one of them sitting sideways. 'Tis why i ruled that out initially.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3250044.jpg&hash=baf9d4d08117ea6dd75e055330f67e2a5c987767)

Not a real problem, just ordered 2" spacers and a sideways throttle linkage (That will probably need spaced up as well), Just wanted to avoid this if could be. My brother's working on another solution, I think we can do it, but gonna make a lot of aluminum chips doing it on his CNC. We can try that out later. I'd much rather have them inline if at all possible. The standard fuel lines will work in line, and I beleive I'm going to have a problem with one whole bank being rich and the other being lean with the sideways setup using non-dominator carbs. Time will tell. I'd rather have the lean condition in the middle 4 cylinders of the engine, given the Ford's firing order, I think this will produce less harmonics. Bear in mind this isn't the 8-71 you have. Wouldn't matter in a blown application.

As you can see, the throttle brackets on the shafts will not clear the intake, and it's sitting on the booster pump linkage. This was fine with my push throttle assembly on the RPM intake. May still need to go to a pull deal after I see the linkages. We'll see.

Nothing simple on these things. :banghead:

If it was easy anybody could do it. As I said before pretty much all TRs are about 9 5/8 center to center so all carbs this size are sideways, makes working on them alot easier. I know I have Dominators end to end but thats a blower deal, Mike Huhl.

Got the old intake off, and wow, still evidence of the Milkshake we made at Mead. Wsa all trapped between this pan and the underside of the intake. no ither evidence in the engine that I could see, and oil is still clear as could be, thank goodness. but YUCK!

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3250046.jpg&hash=842ca73ec5ebee21a86ac2ee5ad505abcf18d831)

Also, should i reuse this pan under the tunnel ram? seems redundant to me. The tunnel is going to need machining to fit. It sits too high for the bolts to align. I don't remember if the RPM was machined down to compensate for the head and deck resufacing or not. I'll have to call the machine shop in the morning to find out, but it appears it's going to need quite a bit taken off.
if I use the pan, then that will have to be accounted for as well.

OK, Got it worked out, I think.

Thanks Terry! Couldn't have done it without ya! Got the sideways linkage today and after figuring out how it is SUPPOSED to go on, got my mind back on what I originally wanted to do, and about 1/3 of this linkage kit made it happen. Will post pics of the final product after I machine a couple minor brackets, et al, but I think we're good to go! I'm psyched! Reversed the fuel lines, I plan to put a T for them in the gap between the runners, replacing the hose barbs with AN elbows, and maybe a pressure guage. Hooking up the throttle cable will be a slight challenge, but once I figure out where it needs to go, I'll whip up, or have whipped up, an aluminum bracket for it.

Anyone want some 2" holley spacers? I ordered them, not here yet, but not gonna need them. Hopefully, should have everything ready to go this week for the weekend!

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi673.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv95%2FIrrebel%2FMoo%2520build%2FP3280049.jpg&hash=b7c983a71fb84037d4000f593b71aaee54eccd17)

Don't this look better, cleaner and more professional? reversed how the fuel lines are supposed to go, and it just so works they can be t'd under the plenum, with some more AN fittings. No Crap everywhere cluttering things up. Just tight to the intake and carbs! Can't wait to post pics of the final product on this. I got wood!

So much for "HAVING" to sideways mount them!

Keith you're welcome to the spacers. Still haven't arrived anyway, but, YOU gotta sell the idea to the little lady, I know NOTHING. ;D

Got home from work and got the thing finally buttoned on the engine. Hadda modify some tools to torque the bastard, then swap the top around as it was on Backwards, But we're ready to make a couple brackets to hold the throttle cable and linkages. Also waiting on a couple AN elbows, a T fitting and some stainless fuel line, but the torturous part is done, I hope.

Did run into a problem putting the dizzy back in exactly how it came out tho, the clips that hold the cap run right into the front of the intake. So I'm gonna hafta start from scratch again on the timing and position it so it clears then redo the plug wirs on the cap. Not a big deal, but the engine cover's gotta come out for that.

Oh, And RJ sux as a chrome polisher too. Gonna hafta do it myself,,,again.....

And lots of oil in the bilge. Couldn't figure out why the water hasn't eveaporated yet. It's mostly oil. Oil level never went down, hoping it's from the impromtu oil and filter change at Mead. Will have to keep an eye on that.

Well, I got the Throttle linkages done. They're a little hilljack/backyard, but good enough to get measurements from and get my baby brother to fire up his Kira Machine Center. AND, they WORK!. So much for 'you have to sideways mount them'. I think Terry knew this would work all along, just wanted it to be MY idea. ;D

Will look better with milled brackets, but it was kinda fun making sure we kept the same angles, or as close as I could measure, on all the linkages and throttle cable. Neat thing is, the throttle is easier to operate too! Not sure THAT'S a good thing yet! >:D

Got it timed again, dammit, go figure it would happen to me.  I figured if I mark the dizzy and block where it was set, and mark the top of the dizzy where the rotor was pointing, I should be ok, and woulda had the dizzy cleared!
The Only thing left is wait on my AN -6 elbows, a T fitting, and run the braided stainless from the pump. I know I'm really gonna need an electric pump at this point, but I am curious how this marine pump will do.

So much for mileage!

Aiight, done as she can be for now. Still have to get the engine cover upholstered, other than that, ready to run. Actually idled at 900 rpm this time around! Gonna try for 800 or less for the goddam decibel Nazi's. Here's what she looks like all buttoned down tho. (No fuel lines on these pics, the fittings just arrived yesterday while I was at work, I threw them on a few minutes ago and filled the block with water and fired the cow! Cam's battery was dead, charging now.) Plan is to head to Roosevelt next Sunday with the kids.

Looks great, If may be you switch around the float bowls on one of the carbs the fuel inlets will be on the same side are did you already try.
Title: Re: Project Mooooooooo.........
Post by: IRRebel on April 04, 2009, 07:24:39 PM
Thought of that, but I thought that would complicate things immensely on the linkages having the fuel inlets on the same side as the throttle plate on one of the carbs. Didn't try it, might do that once the electric pump gets here just to see, they should swap over ok., and now that I see how the linkage has to go, should actually clear.  Might actually try it now since I opened a new beer! This poor Mechanical is gonna chatter like SpongeBob with all this though!

Now I remember, that I looked at it again. Beer must be kicking in. Single pumpers. That's why can't be done. If they were double pumpers, no way could I have mounted them this way to begin with. That's why this was so easy to do.

Will the vacuum secondaries work, I'm just saying with my motor they wouldn't open up all the way,the motor wasn't making any vacuum do to the cam.

You Lost me, U in the right thread boost? You feeling ok? Voices? a rash? Unexplained Hickeys or anything?:screwy:

If this is the right thread, then I'm the one that is confused. :screwy: If the secondaries don't open up all the way, it's because there's too much carb(s) for my motor, or a vacuum leak, I would guess. The switching of the bowls is not possible because the accelerator pump is only on 1 bowl, not both, so swapping them is not possible, though a great Idea! I don't expect much vacuum due to my cam as well, until at or near WOT and 4000 or so RPM, then there should be plenty!

What do i know, running the intake I have right now it makes 15 psi at the carbs I ran the tunnel ram vacuum secondaries It was like 7psi no leaks, boat ran great until about 3200 rpms  fell on its face do to no vacuum I was told do to the tunnel ram and cam setup wasn't making enough vacuum to open them up.So that was what happen to me so good luck and never mined me and the shit i say must have mad cow disease  ;D
BTW what the fock is this all about voices, rash ? what I fock up and say the wrong shit you got to start bashing calling me out ,let me tell you I don't play shit like that.

Hoping I don't have that problem, we'll see!

Will the vacuum secondaries work, I'm just saying with my motor they wouldn't open up all the way,the motor wasn't making any vacuum do to the cam.

Vacuum secondaries open when the velocity of air flowing through the primaries reaches a certain rate. With two carbs and a high duration cam, the secondaries would not open completely because the velocity of air flowing through the primaries was too low (low vacuum).  IMHO you should be running smaller vacuum secondary carbs or using mechanical secondary carbs.  A simple way to increase vacuum signal is to add 4-hole under carb spacers...they's cheaper than new carbs...

Run it and see what happens

That's my plan. You and Boost could very well be right on that! Gonna take some convincing to get my son to stick his face into the carbs at speed on this thing to see, tho. But I may be able to sell the idea,  ;D

But I figure if they don't open all the way, it's over carbed, maybe, You guys have me re thinking this. :banghead: But that shouldn't be a big deal as long as it performs to 5000 rpm like it did before (Starving, but it did it). Hoping it will keep going to 6000. If need be, I'll convert them over to mechanicals. But was hoping to avoid that. Again, we'll see when it hits the water.

I think I upset boost by not understanding his post and being a smartass about it. We weren't even discussing the Vac Secondary issue, and I didn't understand. Leave it to me to put my foot in my mouth! Sometimes what sounds funny in my lil brain doesn't sound funny when you read it.

Trust me, I value everyones input on this. I ain't a pro.

OK, Been awhile since I updated everyone on this whole deal. Got the fuel lines ran, then redid them again a couple of days ago with real AN6 fittings and hose (Might be small, we'll see).  But got it fired! Was hesitating, but after simply firing her for 3 or 4 seconds, 3 times, she idles at 800 rpm! Something she couldn't do with 1 750 carb.

Got some routing issues with the plumbing now that I have to fix before the engine cover goes back in. One wants to run on the crank, the other too close to the alt. Should be able to get the engine cover back in complete with dual remote filters that I HOPE will lower the Oil pressure. What size AN fitting fits the Bassett T valve? -10 or -8? I think I can solve that one with that,  a -10 or -8 AN to 1/2" MPT 90, the other one needs a compression 90 to 1/2" FPT. Problem solved without going to all Braided stainless and AN fittings right now. (will eventually, this thing has cost me enough thus far, and is working fine).

Thanks Terry, As I've said before, couldn't have done this without you. I think you knew this was possible all along tho. My lil brain kinda worked overtime getting the carbs mounted this way, but wow, does it look sweet like this (Not as sweet as your Dominators over an 8-71 huffer, but still sweet).

Thanks for the info. thought they were -8. Didn't want to order fittings and have them the wrong size,

The braided lines I got with the headers seem to be -6 with -8 fittings on them. Weird. No I did not weld the weep holes (Thanks Nordie), lol. Gonna order a few fittings and some -8 braided to start to clean up this plumbing this week. Taking BOTH boats out next Sunday!! Gotta see how well this setup works and get a GPS on it. All indications are the intake swap went smooth.

FYI, when putting a Weiand Tunnel ram on a BBF, don't use the front and rear seals with the intake set!. RTV. They don't tell you that. Also used the race "pan" that was under the RPM, so two layers of RTV, but it still worked.

Maybe I shouldnt'a put the pan back in. It didn't seem to do much with the RPM intake? 'cept hold some of the milkshake back, lol. I guess we'll hafta see. I plan a lot of seat time this summer in it, so we'll find out! No diverter, so you and the 'ole lady' (She'll beat ME for saying that) are safe riding in my wake at Echo Bay. You can check for frost then, lol.

Hey Ray at least you have your dizzy at the right end   LOL ;D

Does make it easier, but in all honesty, clearance wouldn't have been an issue had the dizzy been on the 'wrong' end, lol. And I coulda ran my Comp 9000! But it does run sweet! Did the same thing with it after resetting everything and reindexing where #1 starts, get it to true TDC, back it off to about 10 degrees BTDC, tightened it up. She fired first try (After the fuel bowls filled up).

Funny thing was, ran the llines like I did so it would line up easily for a rear mounted electric Holley Black pump I got. But the fuel pressure at idle off the mechanical was 7 psi? Might not need the electric after all.

No your ok, motors like cold air. You see the frost on that manifold? You wanna find out what the pressure is at running speed. Again, I run two Doms off a mechanical pump, have no idea what the pressure is. I wondered about it till I saw a grand national boat #369 running all the same Mike Kuhl shit I got. I think the pump is Kuhl or Clay Smith, it's worked for the last twenty five years so i'll leave it alone.

Our old race boat pull air over about four feet of the bottom of the hull (aluminum) to cool the air down, colder the better, I have a picture somewhere of a tunnel ram on one of the river racers that actually had about 3/4" of frost built up on the base of the manifold after a 38 MPH run... :screwy:

Latent heat of vaporization  8)

As the air goes through the tunnel, it is under low pressure because it is below the throttle blades, it is also wet from the fuel, causing a refrigeration effect to take place, it is the exact basis of how a centrifugal chiller works for industrial cooling plants....

I tried to use laymans terms, so hope that answered your question... ???

Hey Ray, what kind of intake manifold did you have on there before this swap? And might you be interested in selling it?

It's an Edelbrock Performer RPM. (Not the air gap one). New, really, the only run time it has had was during the cam Break in, the weekend at Mead and  one short local lake ride. Dunno if I wanna sell it or not tho. It worked VERY well, and from what I got today from the new cruiser I may want to use it on that one, maybe, who knows?.

Didn't see you either, lol we got in about 10:30, pulled out at 5:30. Just got home. Had lots of beer too, although none made it home with us.

Took tons of pictures, and they stayed! (Becca dropped the camera in the lake) DAMMIT, now I gotta go buy another camera!

Good times! My buddy and RJ drove the blue boat all day, with a couple of other buddies, and the girls all rode with me in the Moo boat, lol. Go figure. Took it pretty easy though, only a couple blasts above 4000 rpm, but working great! Both boats ran flawlessly all day, although the Moo boat does NOT like to idle when cold. You can certainly hear it ccoming tho. Need to get baffles, got more than my share of 'looks' from the poor bastards trying to fish, lol.

Scratched some of the new paint on the dock. No fault of mine this time, RJ was holding it against the dock while I launched the Blue one. Not his fault either really. Cy will fix it for me,  ;D

Catch you there next time! Lake is cool, really.

How'd RJ like that shit ,huh? Did he get to drive at mead? Did he bring his buddies? We were gonna go out today but had some stuff to do to it and mow the lawn. Got it fired at 7, had corrosion in the wiring plug at the engine. During the week is better anyway. I showed Brad what a crowd is where i hang the other day......one boat

RJ Loved it, no he didn't drive at mead. He actually got on it full throttle and did well. My buddies were afraid to let it hang out, it'll only do maybe 50 or so, spent half my time waiting on those guys! (The Blue one, he isn't real interested in driving the moo just yet)

Yeah, he impressed his friends, lol, walked around after that like he was hung like a shetland pony, lol

Hey Ray,where were you guys at? We would cruise around for awhile then we would throw the anchor out at the end of the lake opposite of the launch ramp. We were looking for you guys. I saw one loud jet boat, I think it was white. Had the headers sticking out the back.

That woulda been me.  ;D Didn't see another white Jet boat let alone any other with headers setting out the back, all day, lol. And yeah, you'da heard it before you saw it for sure. Was a little nervous when the Deputy sherrif came down from the lil shack above the ramp to watch me launch the thing. Hopefully he was just a fan.

We started out going right from the launch ramp (by the dam), then to the other side of the lake looking for a place to beach it. Not much there, but we did find a decent spot on the opposite side from the marina. Fished and drank a bit, then loaded up and blasted the whole lake for awhile. All in all we only beached 4 or 5 times (So the girls could, well, you know.)

I liked it alot, big and open, lots of reef areas, and even the wake barges seemed to give a wide berth. No problem children on wet bikes either, that I noticed.  Down at the far end of the lake, yeah, there were a lot of people anchored. I assumed fishing or whatever, I kinda stayed clear a bit with that many boats moored, I'd be about as popular as a fart at a wedding.

The other boat, I noticed from being behind it, is really nearly as loud as the moo, even with TT Harmin Marine manifolds on it, so maybe I was worrying over nothing, but it DOES get your attention doind a holeshot!.

Hhmmm, I got an old flatty I gotta get rid of......

Don't give RJ any ideas, Terry,  >:D He's politicing HARD for the Yellow Submarine to get into full swing, lol. He did impress me not being afraid to full throttle the Biesemeyer though, and he even tried a slick move to get me with the roostertail, but he didn't have it trimmed up when  he did it. If he had, he'da got me good!

Did it go  MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!?

Didn't put the horn in it yet,  >:D

Do gotta say this.

The tunnel ram was a "Holy Cow" upgrade. The engine loves it, the jet drive loves it, and it seemed to me the vac secondaries were opening just fine (Not all the way, but I never took it above 4500 rpm either sustained).  It did seem to love the hole shot mode! Only used up one tank and the other was a little over half full when I pulled it out. Although, the blue one only used up less than half of it's tanks, lol. It ain't no Kia. I need braver friends to go back and watch if the secondaries are opening at speed. Certainly feels like it from the assometer. Even cruising at around 45 or so, then stomp it for a second or two at around 5500 or so, just woke up and wanted to scream! >:D

Next time maybe my buds won't whimper like lil girls and let me do it, ( why they went to the other boat and the women rode with me), or be alone and Rj to back me up in case it goes BAD, lol.

Will be a lot of solo time with it this summer when the kids go back east, so we'll shake it down. I'm sure getting it timed properly and maybe some of Terry's carb magic will fix the idle problems without resorting to a 1000 rpm idle. (Sounds sooo cool idling at 700, just won't do it for more than 30 seconds, or 2 seconds when it's cold)

Well, boat's been great, until the Saguaro run. Ran her for 5 hours pretty much non-stop. Seems to have real issues with rough water, which I posted in another thread. I came off that lake beat up like an Iraqi prisoner. (Still have sore muscles from that!)Hopefully we can work that out easily. I'm thinking ride plates and diverter will help.

Pulled the plugs and checked the wires about the misifiring issues( seemed to be running on 6 cylinders upon entering the no wake zone as I was preparing to pull it out), looks fine, just maybe started back to it's own rough 700 rpm idle that it hasn't done in awhile and surprised me (always wanted to idle at 1000 Sunday for some reason, sticky cable???). Also maybe a couple of the blasts of water over the bow hit the carbs and cleaned something out, or the major bouncing around we did, lol. I think we're ok there.

Crawled under the boat with an 8 foot level and can see very little rocker or hook, much less than 1/16" anywhere on the boat that I can find. So that's not it. Maybe just very shallow V, but not much more than the Biesemeyer which rode fine there I'm told.

If  the diverter doesn't fix it, then ride plates and maybe removing the foam that's packed into it's bow. (Does ride bow high at lower speeds) Might need a fuel tank up there, lol. I don't think they built them with my kind of HP in mind, but still, HP does not create the ride in rough water.

Any input?

OK, Been awhile since I did any sort of anything even resembling work on this boat, so I called Tom this morning and pulled the trigger on a Place Diverter for it. Can't go through the summer with no roost or control, so why not? (Also bought another engine, but that's a different matter and for a different thread)

After all the work Jeremy, Nordie and Terry put into my Biesemeyer this last week or so, now I feel I gotta be working on this thing and ensuring I don't have more problems that I couldn't see like that! (You guys got some $ coming your way and a couple 30 packs for this, Josh, sending up the headers, I know they're in much better shape than yours, but no baffles)

Terry, the flatty's just gonna have to wait, lol, even though you found a smoking deal on that V-drive.

Will keep you posted with pics of it's install. Then the grinding Brad did (Gonna do the same on Blue My Wad, BTW).

OK, Got the Place Diverter from Tommy boy (Thanks man! thing looks awesome!). And installed it today. Funny how the old nozzle didn't match the pump and the new PD unit matches it perfectly, huh  ???

Anyway, went on without a hitch. Tried to see if I could reuse the titty pink reverse bucket, but no, of course not. I guess Cy has another one to paint up.

Some time will be spent with a grinder to fix some clearance issues with the plastic pump cover, however. What do you guys think? about 600 hp and this angle, decent roost?

Looked at that, but it's not hitting anything externally. soooo the grindings gonna be on the inside of the bell, if any. That makes me nervous, lol. It would appear that that's about as far as it can go though. Offset Pins???? just thought of that!

Now my lil brain is werkin!

Yeah, I heard. I'm not even in the same area code as that guy from what I've seen. Just needed to be able to toss even a little one since I saw how much fun it was on the (RIP) Biesemeyer.

It should be ok, it'd toss a little one on it's own at max speed if you feathered the throttle just right.

It'll be fun running with you guys! Some of them have already seen this thing run, just not with the current configuration. A work in progress, hopefully we can get the thing tuned properly this week. Been running it relentlessly on it's initial settings, which are obviously close!

Lol no, I'm too old and tired to try racing anyone. Just wanted to build a fast boat, which I did, and now Terry has me building a faster one, lol. (Although this Compjet thing has my interest).

If we get into some friendly drags next weekend, well, i ain't gonna say no either! This is all about fun, and what I wanted my kids exposed to. My kids talk about the experiences on the boats all the time (Driving their mother nuts right now, she just texted me a couple hours ago to see if I could send a boat up there to shut them up, lol!)

They know nothing of the blue one burning and sinking, and that's gonna be hard on my son. 'tis why Terry and I are doing the V-drive thing! The kids had enough, hopefully, we can have it done when they come back July 29th. Should make him VERY happy!

Ray

Edit: Should also mention that since scaring my son half to death at Mead with the Moo, (Her first launch) he's been pretty laid back about how fast I go and doesn"t seem to mind the speed so much. He warned me to not hot rod the blue meaney too much (It was getting the Moo's old Performer RPM and a new marine 850 i bought), or he'd not be happy, lol. I guess that's not a problem now...............

Was just re reading this old thread and noticed the last post (Sorry Boost, didn't see that b4), Boost, did she meet you're expectations? We didn't even run together (or meet each other that I recall), but Brad probably had the best seat in the house at what a near full power run looks like from the Moo at the end of the day Sunday at Big River! Actually, Glasscutter was on the beach when I did it too, so maybe he has some input?

I think the gullwing woulda prolly owned me, myself, but it was your kinda water for that, lol.

Was a fun trip! I like the river, really. Everyone sign up for Blythe in August, should be a Hoot!

Seriously, though, it went down like this. I hadda transfer Moo and the Sewer Pickle, they were out of date, and figured I might as well do the rest of 'em. So I went with a folder full of titles, regs, etc and transferred 5 boats. One with no title or nothing. After all that (A grand total of about 15-20 minutes, really), I'm looking through the Reg #'s. Pickles and the Saguaro's were the same, both native Arizona boats, when I got to Moo's, I laughed and said "No freaking way"........Girl behind the counter asked "what?" so I showed her......after a few seconds she was blushing and said something like "OMG, I'm sorry, do you want me to change this?" I was like "Oh HELL NO!, I could come back there and kiss you, you don't understand the boat this is for!"........

Oh lord this was an old thread and story.......At the Dumas Walker, Big River Cali.

As I recall, Rivertard and I were both being more than a little obnoxious..........go figure......So when they came to talk to us, I pretended they were talking to Mike, and when they were talking to Mike, he pretended they were talking to me. Pissed them off even worse. We ended up just talking to each other "about" these guys, the bartender and, well, I guess bouncer, was really another bartender, just stared at each other shrugging their shoulders  while Mike and I argued amongst ourselves as to who was at fault. These guys started to look more than a little pissed.

Then the "you didn't wear the helmet to bed last night did ya, it was your turn" comment came out. I think Mike said it to me, but regardless, the bartenders now thought we were both certifiable......And at about that point we were asked to leave a LITTLE more abrubptly. At which point, after I convinced them I needed to pay the tab.........Mike climbed into the bed of my truck, I had 6 or 7 people in the cab, and Mike was back there bouncing off all the parts, headers, fenders, whatever else was back there on the little 2 block ride back to the Big River Inn.

Fun times........NOW......the bars there love us......go figure........ :sly:
