Sundance bubble deck project
« on: August 18, 2015, 09:17:53 AM »
Hellooo . I'm new to your forums . I'm in the process of replacing stringers and transom . This boat had 1/4 stringer . I plan on installing full stringer . Is there a preferred Fiberglas resin I should use on a job like this .. Thanks ...

Mine was epoxy resin, the thing I liked about it was that it was easy to work with and it didn't stink up my garage, house ect.

The intake needs to be set in Sea Going putty. It is a heavy bodied epoxy specifically made for this type of job. The intake set needs to be really accurate and I would recommend getting some help if you have never done one. Not saying it's really difficult, there are just steps that need to be taken that if they are not done properly are nasty to stay over.

Someone in the know could save you numerous hours and reduce cuss words to a minimum.

Also, it is silly important to ensure the hull trains is shape while you do this type of job. Sitting on just the trailer just won't do.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Ambitious is the word of the day.

Thanks for the help . I do not have anyone local to help . I'll have to give it a try . I searched the forum and didn't see any posts on setting the intake . If I mist a post can some one point me in the right direction or give me some info on how to set the intake ...  The boat is not on the trailer . I have it on blocks as straight and level as possible ..  Here's some pics

This is the engine I'm going to run . I had this engine in a 18 ft hallet . I had a AA impeller . The boat did low 70s and did low 80s on nitrous at Dexter reservoir in Oregon ( COLUMBIA DRAG BOAT ASSOCIATION  ) Would hold Quartermile bracket racing there .This is a smaller boat so will see .. Can any one tell me what  an inducer with a A impeller would be like ? Does the inducer do anything for top end speed . This engine would spin the AA impeller 5100 and on nitrous 6200  ,,, thanks

from strongest to weakest and most expensive to cheapest: epoxy, then vinylester, then polyester.  all three will work.  choice is yours.  if you go with epoxy, you will have a hard time using polyester over cured epoxy.  itll work, but not nearly as strong a bond as poly on poly.  poly over vinylester is ok.
use clear doug fir for stringers.  as for it at a lumber yard....shouldnt be hard to find in Washington.  there are plenty of threads about setting stringers here on this forum...should help paint a picture for you.  also search around for transom installs/replacements.  good luck.  big bite for first timer.

Thanks for the info . I think the hull is poly . It's a mid 70s Tahiti  .

Yes the engine runs well . I ran it in the 11 or 12 second class . Had to run the nitrous hard to compete in the 11 second class . I'm thinking for trying something different . The inducer with an A impeller . But I'm not sure if the inducer will help on the top end or only on the bottom end ... Thanks

I'm sure it's poly. Cheaper by far to manufacture. Poly should be good....in your app, I'd suggest epoxy. Vinylester at the least...cause youre racing. Not saying poly will fail...at least you'll know it's a stronger bond.

considering that the thrust of jet is transferred thru hull rather than transom....as it would be with an I/O or outboard....id say you should be good to go.

i recently just replaced my transom....a layer of 1.5oz mat/cloth(dont remember weight)/1.5oz mat.  all over 5/8 plywood.  tabbed with 1708 all around.

hope it helps clear your thoughts..... ;)

Do I need to double that up on the stringers ?? I'm using 6.56 oz woven mat . I've put 4 layers on the transom .

Thanks again for the info

A jet pump needs to be fed water for it to remain properly loaded.  During the hit, the boat is not moving at a sufficient velocity for the hull/intake to properly load the impeller.  The result is that the impeller can discharge more water than it can draw in.  This is sometimes referred to as blowing the pump dry and is a form of pseudo-cavitation.

An inducer will primarily help your launch.  It does so by increasing the pressure at the inlet eye of the impeller, reducing cavitation.  This loads the impeller earlier and helps the pump pull the engine down earlier.  As the velocity of the boat increases, the benefits of an inducer drop off.  However, in a drag race application, the speed that an inducer provides at the beginning of the run carries out to the big end of the track resulting in reduced ET.

Adding an inducer will not affect the RPM where your pump loads the engine.  That is entirely influenced by the cut of the impeller.

One thing to note, should you be primarily interested in MPH gains, an inducer may reduce top speed.  This is a result of inducer pitch, shaft RPM, and boat velocity.  Regardless, our experience has been that an inducer always reduces ET.

Good luck,

Joe
