I'm planning to re-wire my boat next winter, where should I go to get the wire? I know Hardin still makes harnesses, but I want to build a custom harness.

Mcmaster industrial supply has everything you will ever need to build a harness. They have all different choices of wire and even have thicker jackets then the standard automotive wire, including wiring tools as well. They have great explanations of what each type of wire and such. They also have great terminal ends, heat shrink, etc. They also have weather pack fittings as well. I have completely wired 3 boats as well as made a lot of harnesses for my flat bed dump project with tons and tons of wiring for strobe lights, plow control etc all with McMaster products. I cannot remember the last time I went to west marine or napa for wire products which are a rip off.  I suggest you take a look at the site and search around there a little for wiring products. There are a lot of choices. I get the pre-tinned wire that has the thicker jackets which I think exceeds marine grade.

Finally I finished the wiring to my terminal board on the back of the engine. Here is some pictures

how do you know what goes to what?  none of the colors match up.
