Just yesterday, at Rotary park, I had seen a few close calls. One was a 26' Eliminator going 90+.... through a pack of freakin jetskis, why not slow down? Another was a Jet boat, with the diverter up trying to hose the beach. And the last one was a bunch of guys on a boat, that was 15' up on shore at 11:00 last night, obviously had ran it up shore by the marks, but when I asked them what happened they just said "we parked and the water dropped" yea ok. But I had also seen a bunch of jet skis making turns without looking, jumping wakes. But the funniest one I seen was a guy driving a large Cat, blowing his air horn at a jet ski that was doing donuts, as the boat was going by..... oh yea the boater had the horn in one hand, and the other hand had a big middle finger, and not looking where he was going cause he was staring at the skit  ;D

I believe there should be boating licenses, for all watercraft. Even though I have been boating on the river since The weekend I was born, I still wouldn't mind having to take one to keep people safer. My uncle was ran over by drunk boater, luckily he survived, and then I lost a friend a couple years back, and the passenger lost her leg, due to a drunk boater. I think anyone can be dangerous, there just needs to be more awareness

AGREED......  You go Tony ;)

There are licensing for Cars, Semi's, CCW's...Why not boats! I fully agree that there should be licensing.  Anybody under 18 should be allowed over 30/35 even with a license and never a passenger.

The reason there is no "licensing" for boaters is it has been voted down time and time again, first of all because who will enforce it ? and second of all who will pay for it? the more we (boaters) want the government to do the more it costs and the more lakes and rivers get shut down...

I think what needs to happen is true boating enthusiasts need to volontarily take a boating safety course and encourage others to do the same, I used to be with the CG aux. and give safety courses every year, if you teach one person one thing you've done a good deed for the boating community.

It would be paid for the same way that DL are paid for. A fee when you get it. It would be enforced the same way that DL are enforced. If your popped for not having it, you get a big ass fine. The money that the Fees/fines would produce can go to more rangers and River/lake maint.

If you give someone a choice to pay for a safety course the odd are that they are not going to do it. especially when the money now needs to go to fuel cost!

i see your point but i agree with this

That would never ever work in Cali., the red tape alone would cost more than the fees could ever generate, all the govering officials would want their "cut" IMO.

BTW here's a good link to a safety "quiz" I only got 94% but I think some of the regs. are AZ and NV, or else I'm rusty...

Screw the local officials and the states. Most rivers and lake are dept of parks and rec controlled and all the rangers are federal officers so the goverment needs to set it up. The states can get a small cut based on the number of "state parks" they have or patrol and the amount of usage they get.

Lets say there are 10 million boats and PWC w/ the same number of operators - actively being used, (I think that would be a VERY conservative number) @ $35 a license per year = $350,000,000 a year program.

People who rent can purchase a 1 day usage license after passing a written safety course/test for $50 bucks. If they dont like it they dont rent, period!

I would say that a program that could conservatly generate $400 Million a year could benefit all of the boating community.

I like it, but we can't even keep all of our state parks open now its so mismanaged, they will do the same for whatever else you can throw out there, the sherrifs department used to patrol the Sac. delta, but funding magically vanished, now just the fish and game.

But thats just it...Federally managed program. Take the state out of it! Hell, even move federal rangers over to manage the state parks.

If someone says that they wont pay 35 bucks for a license they dont need to be boating!
