i wont go as far as rick did, but, some times i wonder why there aren't more deaths for the pwc's. they act like IDIOT'S...... they just ride aimlessly not caring about any body or any thing, except jumping your/my wake. all pwc's should require classes/schooling, probably boat's as well.

sorry for the rant....

I agree any death is sad close to you or not....here in Idaho there are tons of youngsters on the pwcs and they have little to no knowledge or respect for themselves or us the boaters they cut off or run into and then blame us....they should have a mandatory safety course of somekind for these people...there have been sevral really bad accidents this year and we are only in our second weekend of good weather up here......

I disagree. I think there are as many idiot boaters as there are idiot jet skiers, the problem is there are more jet skiers than there are more boaters, because they are more affordable. It's the people driving the skis/boats that make them dangerous, not the vessel, and IMO just cause someone has a boat doesn't mean they are any smarter/better of a driver

This can go on forever and a day,  I have to disagree with you now Pee Dub!!! We spend the weekends at the park with the kids, on the beach :banghead:  We watch all thats going on........All i see is boaters going up the river and back down again.......   Then i see all the idiots on there ski's spinning circle's , jumpin wake's acting like complete fool's  . This has nothing to do with , "if you own a boat or a ski" Its common sense...

Not everybody has it, even with people that have boats lack common sense at time's

Another factor is ALCOHOL

The problem is that most boat drivers arent 18 and under! Because of their age PWC drivers have little or no skills or judgement. I am not saying that all adult boat and PWC drivers know what they are doing but I would say that most of them have the maturity and judgement to not put themselves in stupid situations.

Which is what PW said, "operator", not "type of vehicle".

I've seen some serious dumbass drivers of very nice very expensive boats. Now if you really want to start a debate on danger just add some alchohol.

I used to own a couple of jet skis and I compre them to motorcycles on the freeway, they are very hard to see, especially the ones that go like 65MPH from the factory.

Just yesterday, at Rotary park, I had seen a few close calls. One was a 26' Eliminator going 90+.... through a pack of freakin jetskis, why not slow down? Another was a Jet boat, with the diverter up trying to hose the beach. And the last one was a bunch of guys on a boat, that was 15' up on shore at 11:00 last night, obviously had ran it up shore by the marks, but when I asked them what happened they just said "we parked and the water dropped" yea ok. But I had also seen a bunch of jet skis making turns without looking, jumping wakes. But the funniest one I seen was a guy driving a large Cat, blowing his air horn at a jet ski that was doing donuts, as the boat was going by..... oh yea the boater had the horn in one hand, and the other hand had a big middle finger, and not looking where he was going cause he was staring at the skit  ;D

I believe there should be boating licenses, for all watercraft. Even though I have been boating on the river since The weekend I was born, I still wouldn't mind having to take one to keep people safer. My uncle was ran over by drunk boater, luckily he survived, and then I lost a friend a couple years back, and the passenger lost her leg, due to a drunk boater. I think anyone can be dangerous, there just needs to be more awareness

There are licensing for Cars, Semi's, CCW's...Why not boats! I fully agree that there should be licensing.  Anybody under 18 should be allowed over 30/35 even with a license and never a passenger.

The reason there is no "licensing" for boaters is it has been voted down time and time again, first of all because who will enforce it ? and second of all who will pay for it? the more we (boaters) want the government to do the more it costs and the more lakes and rivers get shut down...

I think what needs to happen is true boating enthusiasts need to volontarily take a boating safety course and encourage others to do the same, I used to be with the CG aux. and give safety courses every year, if you teach one person one thing you've done a good deed for the boating community.

It would be paid for the same way that DL are paid for. A fee when you get it. It would be enforced the same way that DL are enforced. If your popped for not having it, you get a big ass fine. The money that the Fees/fines would produce can go to more rangers and River/lake maint.

If you give someone a choice to pay for a safety course the odd are that they are not going to do it. especially when the money now needs to go to fuel cost!

That would never ever work in Cali., the red tape alone would cost more than the fees could ever generate, all the govering officials would want their "cut" IMO.

BTW here's a good link to a safety "quiz" I only got 94% but I think some of the regs. are AZ and NV, or else I'm rusty...

Screw the local officials and the states. Most rivers and lake are dept of parks and rec controlled and all the rangers are federal officers so the goverment needs to set it up. The states can get a small cut based on the number of "state parks" they have or patrol and the amount of usage they get.

Lets say there are 10 million boats and PWC w/ the same number of operators - actively being used, (I think that would be a VERY conservative number) @ $35 a license per year = $350,000,000 a year program.

People who rent can purchase a 1 day usage license after passing a written safety course/test for $50 bucks. If they dont like it they dont rent, period!

I would say that a program that could conservatly generate $400 Million a year could benefit all of the boating community.

I like it, but we can't even keep all of our state parks open now its so mismanaged, they will do the same for whatever else you can throw out there, the sherrifs department used to patrol the Sac. delta, but funding magically vanished, now just the fish and game.

But thats just it...Federally managed program. Take the state out of it! Hell, even move federal rangers over to manage the state parks.

If someone says that they wont pay 35 bucks for a license they dont need to be boating!

Truly a terrible tragedy , condolences to the family !

re PWC's ,Operator error, intoxication, poor supervision lack of saftey equiptment and little or no training or respect for waterway rules lead to constant "accidents", some of the worst are people's kids and guest's , they give them a PWC and a "short course" and cut them loose to ride amoungst power boats , You rarley see a kid on a dirt bike riding down (or the wrong way) on the freeway  Tom

BTW I know and respect Rick and I know that he cares deeply for his family as well as fellow boaters

Like on one of the other posts, the guy passes the race boat at 80+ driving w/ one hand and obviously not looking where he's going. Should I let kids drive my 100 MPH flatty? You can putt around all day long but how soon do you think they'd be doing 80, 90 or more? Do you realize how fast a boat at that speed can get away from you? I've been a 13 yr old kid on that river driving boats, we went where we were supposed to go at the speeds we were told to go, on the right side of the river. People these days just dont care. No common sence, and they get killed for it, or kill you or your family.

Giving a kid a pwc and letting them out on the river is the same as giving your kid a go kart and letting them play on the freeway!!

I think this is a tragic way for us to remember that we are the one's that have to watch out for the other guy...... Same as in a car driving down the road, it happens to dam fast....   Kids or grown adults, it just happens

I listened to the radio today, dont know who got it confused radio/news paper?  But they say its still under investigation and that the "14" year old is in Las Vegas in extremely critical condition :'(

I just want to grab my kid , give her a hug tell her i love her..

Cause you just never know when the shits gonna hit the fan......

Im venting.

I feel that PWC riders under 18 should be required to take a mandatory training and safety class in a controlled invironment (lake) and be issued a certificate to be carried when riding  (after that I agree that it would be to costly to maintain and police such a program).

I know that when you buy a new quad the manufacturers/dealers will send you to a rider training class, if you want to go (no mater how old or experienced you are).

When I saw the Havasu news paper with the article about the accident I bought a paper just to make my 10 year old daughter read it and think about those girls when she does get the opertunity to ride one.

i wont edit your post because thats how you feel and i respect that. Rick said how he felt and respect was given.

now im sure the parent has better things to do other than read our forum, that being said, it is ultamatly the parents fault for letting the kid get on the damn thing. as it would be mine or yours.

if there is one more post where violence is metioned i will lock the thread.

One thing I noticed up on this part of the river, is that kids on jet skis don't get nearly as checked by the police, as they do down on Martinez. I see people doing illegal stuff everyday on the river here infront of cops, but not much being done unless you have open headers

Our prayers for the families of the 19 & 14 year olds. As we sat on the sandbar Sunday, we watched (with much satisfaction) the Sheriff's patrol pull over several pwcs for jumping wakes. But unfortunately they missed the dumb jet boat operator (with a rooster) who dang near ran a pwc over while passing the pwc and a pontoon boat. The pwc never saw it coming and the rooster knocked him off. Now I hate lake lice as much as the other guy when they are in the wrong, but I also feel sorry for them when they are obeying the rules and get jacked up by one of us doing something wrong!!!

In CT there is a mandatory Boating/PWC class before even getting on the water. If you get pulled over without one it is a 250.00 fine and booted off the lake/river/sound.
I am not saying this is the fix all cause I still see stupid activity with boaters as well as PWC's.
Once you pass the course they should also have a full day course in trailering your PWC/Boat. Esp. dock ettiquete and backing your Boat/PWC up.

The real problem here is very similar to what you will experience when you go snow skiing nowadays.  Too many people crowded into too small of area exacerbated (look it up) by the fact that skiers and boarders enjoy doing two different things.  Jet skis aren't much fun when driven like boats.  They are only fun when turning, jumping, sliding, spinning etc.  In other words when doing anything other than going in a straight line.  Snow boarders make much wider turns, always look for something to "trick" off of AND can't stop very fast.  Does that sound familiar?   Skiers when going slow to medium speeds can carve much tighter turns, and indeed a tight turn is a lot easier on the legs than a long gradual turn.
The result is lots of collisions caused in much the same way as on the water.
I would support boater education for all but it won't make the problem go away.

And Lilrick -- STFU          There is a time and place for joking but this ain't it ya tool.
