Car Audio Help
« on: August 13, 2007, 06:57:48 AM »
I know theres a few car audio guys here (rod, propless, blue) and I cant find a decent forum for my silverado with the answers I need so I figured I'd try asking here....

As you guys know, I just picked up a 2007 1500 Silverado. It has the indash 6 disc (double din) with the bose speakers. The factory radio sounds like crap. Also, it has XM....I HATE XM! Its only been 2 weeks since I got the truck and I dearly miss my Sirius Radio. My dear pal's Jose (ch 27) and Jason Ellis (ch28) are lost out without me.  ;D

Anyways, My main question is do I have to replace the bose speakers to make this work PROPERLY? In my titan, I slapped a aftermarket radio in there and kept the factory speakers. It sounded like ass at 1/2 volume....really muddy. I was told the factory speakers have a different ohm rating  ??? So I had to drop more money into speakers.

Also, I need advice on a deck. For my use, I think a double din in dash dvd/video player is what I want. Not one that has the screen pop out. Also, I would like GPS, but not manditory. My main needs for a deck are RCA Aux Audio+Video inputs (video mp3 player) and SIRIUS satelite radio.

(Crutchfield Links below are for reference only - I know their prices are high and I dont plan on buying from them)

The kenwood DD series decks are close to what want:

DDX6019
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jumBicrXebv/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=168550&I=113DDX6019

DDX7019
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jumBicrXebv/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=168550&I=113DDX7019

DDX8019
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jumBicrXebv/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=168550&I=113DDX8019

(I cannot tell the difference between those 3 decks above other then price and model numbers. If anyone can explain, let me know what the differences are)

Also, I like this deck...its got NAV built in, but its a bit pricey:

DDNX7100:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jumBicrXebv/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=168550&I=113DNX7100

Also, will I need anything other then this Metra Kit?:

GMOS-LAN-02
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jumBicrXebv/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=120OSLAN02

I do have onstar and would like to keep it functioning.

Also, of course, I am lookin for any hookups/deals that you guys might have on this stuff.

Thanks guys!

I just install, so I don't know a lot of info that sales guys know. I don't know the differences on those 3 Kenwoods, the DDX8019 is a lot of money and better have NAV if they want to sell it. The kit you linked us to is a wiring harness for you to keep your OnStar and door chime, you'll need a plastic mounting kit as well. The DDNX7100 is a good deal considering my Pioneer with similar features was $1,800. There are adaptors available to hook up an aftermarket deck to your Bose system although I've never used one where I was 100% satisfied with the results. I'll reply with more detail (useable) when I get back home this afternoon, corporate is too busy in the AM to bug them on the phone about this kind of stuff...

Thanks Rod!

After some price shopping, I found the DNX7100 for $1,089....and for even less if I go with a less reputable vender (ie: ebay stores) ...much more affordable then that bloated Crutchfield price. I think I am going to go with that deck for sure.

About the bose speakers - I figure I can install the aftermarket radio and then go from there. If it sounds like distorted crap, then I can move forward and replace the speakers. Maybe I will just replace them anyways since it seems the speakers arent expensive at all.

I have never been impressed with bose my whole life. There is so much hype around their stuff, but I just dont hear the quality enough to pay for it. I figure its a name to drop for yuppies to say they have something better then average.

Chances are you will have to buy an adapter to work with the Bose. Bose usually puts 1 amp by each speaker so you usally need a source output for each one. What I would do is take it buy a stereo store and have them tell you what you need then just order what you need online.

Definately the least expensive way to go, easy install too  ;D

...
About the bose speakers - I figure I can install the aftermarket radio and then go from there. If it sounds like distorted crap, then I can move forward and replace the speakers. Maybe I will just replace them anyways since it seems the speakers arent expensive at all.
...

It all depends on what you demand of your system. If you want it to sound like marcsrollin's Civic you're going to need about ? $8K... it's difficult at best to describe how a customer wants a system to sound. Yea you want it clear, you want it fairly loud but you don't want the whole block to hear it... to some people that's $1,500 and to other's that's $5K.

Two basic types of speakers in my personal opinion, you got your trash dual cone, mediocre 2-3 way, and the only speakers I'll ever use seperates with seperatly mountable mids and tweets. Your most expensive 2-3 way speakers will sound worse than your least expensive seperates is how I look at it. You can't ask a 6" speaker to play cymbols, vocals, drums, deep bass, guitar, etc... all at the same time and expect great results. A decent basic system to me is a good deck, seperates in the front, seperates or 2 way speakers in the back depending on location, a good 2 channel amp for the front, a good at least twice as big as the front amp amp for the sub(s), and sub(s).

All major brand aftermarket decks are built pretty much the same, so if you take your average Alpine, my personal favorite, the volume control typicaly goes up to 35 - but you start to hear distortion around 17 or 18. So if a average Alpine has a max wattage of 40 per channel, more than half that power is used up by distortion. Distortion is what kills speakers, not wattage. The bigger the amp, the clearer the sound at lower volumes. I believe in too big is just right in amps.

Most factory decks are built for the stupid operator and will "detune" the volume control for idiot operators in an effort to lessen warranty problems.

...
I have never been impressed with bose my whole life. There is so much hype around their stuff, but I just dont hear the quality enough to pay for it. I figure its a name to drop for yuppies to say they have something better then average.

You think you're unimpressed with Bose? Try working with the flocking things!   >:(   ;D

I'm going to call corporate now for you and I'll repost.   ;)

PAC makes a OnStar2 adaptor which is supposed to retain your OnStar and correct the signal for your Bose speakers. I can get it for $105 out the door, you might want to shop around for it - I don't know.

You're also going to need an install kit, Metra 99-2003 is for your truck and a aftermarket double DIN sized stereo. I can get that for less than $15 OTD.

Your also going to need a 40-GM10 antenna adaptor which I can give you for free (I have a couple of them laying around).

It completely depends on what you expect of your stereo system on what you should do. If you want the features of a aftermarket deck but only want the stereo to sound slightly better than the stock deck just change the deck and buy that OS2. But, if you want it to sound a lot better ditch the OS2 and use that $105 on the rest of your system on speakers, amps, and installation.   :P

BTW, one more time...

If you don't/can't get all of it at once first go for the deck and nice front and nice rear/or nice front and mediocre rear speakers at the same time. Next go for both amps and sub(s) at the same time. My .02

I agree with Rod on this one, With the OS2 it will sound only slightly better then stock.

But keep in mind if you dont use the OS2 you will lose the Onstar/door chime and you will have to find an acc power source under the dash for the deck, the factory stereo plug has no acc power it is controled through a data wire. Also if I remember right your truck should have a factory sub in the center console, if so you will also lose that without the OS2.

In my opinion you should start with the deck and OS2, so you dont lose the Onstar and other stuff.
Then if your not happy change the speakers and rewire around the factory amp. At this point you will need to ad an extra speaker under the dash somewhere for the Onstar, it will nolonger be able to use the stereo speakers to talk to you. The factory amp should be under the back of the center console. You can get the speaker wires there and run them up to the deck or run new wires from each speaker , if done right you should still be able keep the factory sub working.
The next step is to add some good amps and subs and rewire it again!! By now you should see why us poor little installers HATE the word BOSE !!!!! >:( >:(

Your best hope is offer Rod lots of beer and hookers to take care of it. :o (sorry to volunteer you Rod but your closer than me ;D )

thanks for the insight....

so I cant run aftermarket speakers on the factory wiring?

man, all this hassle and i would have not opted for a truck with the Bose Speakers.

Well, I guess I will just get the deck and the OS2.

Is the PAC OS2 the same as the Metra GMOS-LAN-02 that I linked to in the first post?

Also, I made up my mind and I am going with the Kenwood DNX7100. Do either one of you get a deal on those? or should I just buy it from an ebay store? The best price I have found is $988.71

Yes you can change speakers and keep the factory amp and wiring but I'm not sure how it will sound, we normaly dont do that because Bose systems sometimes use strange ohm speakers. If bose speakers are 2ohm and aftermarkets are 4ohm the bose will be louder.

Correct. The only mis-information in here is information that I gave about ditching the OS2 and saving some cash, got to have it to have OnStar work. It's kind of early in the AM for me and I can't think straight yet  :P  I'm not sure if you can run aftermarket speakers, lose the Bose amps, and still have OnStar work...
