I agree with your move on trailer tires. All but one of my boats has brand new or a year old trailer tires on it, including the new project.
Car tires do NOT have the sidewall or bias to handle trailering, IMO. Doubt this? Tag a curb HARD on a car tire and see what happens. I'm picky, but I trailer a LONG ways a lot, don't want more problems just bein cheap.
Yes, the desert is not nice to them, armor-all regularly, cover them, check pressures, and drag the thing around a block or two regularly even if not going to the water should keep them in great condition for years. That is if stored outside. I think it's a good idea even if stored inside, myself. But that's just me.
