Diesel Smog!
« on: March 02, 2010, 02:19:20 PM »
I just got my registration renewal in the mail.. If the HUGE price wasnt enough already.. It says smog inspection required. I thought this was a mess up (happened before on my 74 chevy pickup). I went to the smog guy in town just to check and they actually passed it..

Effective January 1, 2010, smog emission inspections are required for diesel-powered vehicles manufactured in or after 1998, and have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 pounds or less for original registrations and transfers. Biennial smog inspection requirements will be phased-in beginning with a registration renewal date of April 30, 2010.

The whole damn thing has to be stock from intake to exhaust, and no chips or programmers. They have to pass a visual smoke test then be hooked up to the computer. Talk about shitty! This is EXACTLY why I bought a diesel, to be loud, fast, bellowing black smoke, WITHOUT the damn smog!

Sorry if this is old news to people.. I just had to vent before I go postal in the DMV!!!

yeah you guys have caught up with us here in vegas we have had to smog diesels now for about 6 years! it is a messed up ordeal, and expensice...im guessing you half to be on a wheel dyno as well, and they run the truck up to 50mph....the smog is getting cheaper here, but is still more pricey then a regular smog! it's messed up...and out neighboring states are all going to stick together on this one...utah arizona new mexico nevada california and i think that is it...if you have a gvwr of 14,000 and above your really effed, cause you half to meet 08 emissions meaning you half to put on that new re-gen system that for an older vehicle it is about 10 grand to have installed!!!! so be glad you are below that rating!

out of curiosity what are they charging you for smog?

i pay $50

I dont know what were gonna be paying yet. I know for a gas pickup it was 58 bucks last smog I got. The guy up here doesnt have a dyno, so I dont think well be doing that for awhile atleast. Im running around like crazy trying to find stock take-off exhaust at all the shops. The first trucks that have to be smogged are the ones that reg. is up in April... LUCKY me!

Thats what Im saying.. 4 inch turbo back straight pipe with AFE intake and Edge with Juice with fuel trim ALL the way up. Smog guy said cold air intake on diesels is legal. His advice was to uninstall the chip and drive for awhile then bring it in. With stock exhaust of course. I love spending money on the exhaust that I spent money to get rid of!

im running the exact setup on my duramax and the whole deal is that your edge will not fuck with your computer....all it does is intercept the signal you can unplug it and be good to go! they will never know plug in the stock harness and leave everything there what are they going to say? now the exhaust i dont know what to tell you there! i wish you good luck! and bend over with no vaseline, and thank the state of california once again!

thanks tree huggers

Holy shit glass! What kinda truck is that? I know mines old (99) but it was 422 for a one ton. My 03 Chevy with the 6.0 was 440. And I thought I was gettin a deal cause of the money Id save on smog! I even used that as one reason to buy the diesel (among 200 others) Im glad I got the edge, but even after you pull those programers they still blow a little smoke. One of the smog tests is a visual smoke test. Im not sure how they judge that. Guy up here is cool as hell, Im sayin if he finds a benjamin where the cats supposed to be Im in!

I got the phone call from a buddy of mine that works at ford in early January about this. From what I remember him saying all the smog places are really going to be looking for is a Catalytic Converter and a stock tuning. So set your programmer back to stock about the morning before the smog and go make a few quick laps to get all the excess diesel out of you pipes. I went to the local exhaust  shop and bought some pipe to run straight exhaust with no muffler.  I then made my own cat drop out and had the guy flare my stock cat so I can put it in and take it out as needed with two exhaust flanges.  I am pretty sure if you go to ford they will only check for a stock tuning and a catalytic converter. Intake should not make a difference on smog if it is California legal. If anyone discovers otherwise please let me know. I am running 2006 f-250 with a superchip programmer and 3” straight exhaust with an air raid intake.

Ps. If they do require stock intake I know that the stock for intakes are rated for up to 500hp. If I would have known that at the time I bought my upgrades I would have never bought the Air Raid.

Here's a new one that maybe you Cali boys have heard of already. No Smog for my diesel yet, but I'm in Pinal County.

Anyways, Chandler PD Officer gave me a newsletter outlining a new munincipal law that took effect March 1.

"Any Diesel engined vehicle left idling for more than 5 minutes, other than normal warm-up and cool down, under 14k lbs gross weight, will be fined $300 under new Maricopa County Air Quality laws" Is the readers digest version.

Beleive it or not, they have been patrolling our Loading Zone quite heavily recently, and now I know why.........It's coming brothers!

Do they actually think that they will be able to make enough money off of a stupid law like this to support the addtional patrols necessary to police it?

Once people learn about the law and where it will be enforced the number of citations writen will drop off and it will become another useless law on the books.  :banghead:

Im not sure if its out law or not, but they made us put the smog stickers on all of our equiptment like the skid steers, backhoes, exavators, trenchers, EVERYTHING! And when they came to put the sticker on, they all got another sticker in the cab that says "This vehicle can not idle more than 5 minutes" At first it was a test to see if it would just kill the motor, but it doesnt! I guess thats their way of being stern on a sticker...  :screwy:
