Alright guys, I am in the market for a hand-held gps unit that I can take on the boat mainly for the speed passes but also for basic locations and such. I have decided I want a garmin but am not sure wich one is best for me. what are all you out there using? Thanks

I just brought home an older Magellan Map410 unit I had bought dad years ago for mapping the locations of property markers. In playing with it, PERFECT for marine applications in it's Marine mode with USA Marine Maps downloaded.   

Certainly not state of the art, but pretty damn cool little device! Gonna mount it in my tuna boat......

Garmin E-Trex is very popular, i've heard good things about them, they range in price from $60 to $80. But if you have a smart phone with satellite capability you can just download a GPS app, i did on my phone, it was free too! I've tested the accuracy of it in my truck and it's nearly perfect.

what app are you using, because the one i downloaded it 2mph slow all the time...tried it in about 4 vehicles, and tested it while i was coming up on one of them signs that tells you your speed, and once again 2mph slow, and most of the time the app only shows me even numbers like 64 66 68 mph

I hate to bring this back to the top but I figured I would let everyone know what I got... I ended up buying a Garmin E-trex Venture HC, the HC means it has a higher sensitivity antena and the C means it is in color . Just bought it a fee minutes ago so now it is time to see how the Fock this thing works. I paid waaaaayyyy too much for it but I figured It will be the only one I need to buy so whatever, its only money right?? Like I always say Fake it 'til you make it

If you're using it in a boat, don't under estimate how quickly it will slip, fall & sink 

Get some pics of top speed (even if you have to get it in the truck on the way to the river) 

Yeah Im thinkin its gonna get a teather of some sorts to the boat  or a coozie life jacket. And yes the first thing I plan on doing is getting some top speed shots.
