Hallett...Someone tell me more about this thing
« on: June 15, 2014, 07:08:15 AM »
How you doing boys!

So I've got my first jet boat now, a 96 Ultra LX I believe but I've got a bug for a winter project (when that time comes). I'm leaning towards a closed bow cruiser like the Sprectra 20's. Something with a little more freeboard than the 18 and 19 footers.

I found this Hallett on craigslist and I love the look of the hull and they did a great job on the paint scheme. What's the story on this particular hull design and are there very many of them out there? I'd love to find a project boat and dump some time and money into it this winter but I'd like to start with a reputable hull. How do these ride in chop? Also what can you expect speed wise from a mildly built pump gas motor?

As far as looks are concerned, this thing checks all the boxes for me.

Thanks for any help, here's the link to the ad but I grabbed the pics for after the ad expires.

I had a 77 and it was great! Also just got done working on a friends 78 yesterday. These are in my opinion bullet proof. Need to get the foam out of the bow and make sure it has aluminum tanks. Otherwise its the best of all worlds.
Get ahold of Hallett Dave. He can give you alot of info on these mini cruisers.
BTW nice boat! If that is paint, they used the original lines.
GARY.

That thing is beautiful! Ive got a hallett bubble deck. They are awesome riding boats and built like tanks. Mines 43 years old and the original owner is a family friend and he said the boat still looks like the day he bought it

That is a really nice boat.  Just looking through the pics, from what I can see, the rigging is REALLY nice.

The ad says it has a roller cam but not specifically mechanical or hydraulic.  If mechanical, just make sure the valve lash is kept in check and that you don’t spend a lot of time at idle to help the roller lifters live.  Cant tell from the pics, but if the heads are iron, it will help hold the lash better.

You will find that the glass work on the Halletts is top notch.  Everything is built very heavy duty, very clean and finished.  Hallett built very nice tooling to construct their boats and are some of the most symmetrical that I have measured.

I have a ’91 21’ that when new and with much less of an engine, did 65 MPH according to the factory pitot tube speedo.  In my opinion, Halletts are one of the nicest riding hulls I have been in.  My friend had a bubble deck around the same year as that one.  Both handled the chop very well even though his had a much lower freeboard.  The ’77 that you are looking at appears to have more freeboard than mine.  I have no reservations saying that that boat would give you confidence in whatever water you choose to navigate.

I really look forward to seeing more of that boat.  Post up pics when/if you get it

Cheers,

Joe

Yeah guys, that boat is beautiful and I'm tempted to sale the Ultra and go pick that thing up but I'd really like to do one myself. That hull is speaking to me though and I'm on the hunt now to pick one up. Ideally a solid hull that doesn't run. I'd like to redo the interior to my liking, have a motor and pump built for it, redo the trailer and have someone dial in the gel coat or paint.

Thanks for all the info so far, I'm liking what I'm hearing about it and I think one of these would strike the right balance for me.

Let me know if anyone knows of one that may be for sale.

I called on a couple of boats today, both the one I posted at the top and this one that's been referenced in other threads on here...http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/boa/4514533958.html

The red and tan one above was just built for a seventy something year old man and his wife is making him sale it. It's all original gel coat that's been clear coated over. The interior is all original. It sounds like it was a ski race boat at one time as he said it used to have a twin turbo in it. I really like the look of that boat but I'm leaning towards a project. We'll just have to see how long it sits up there and I might start talking money with him.

The other one is owned by some guy in the bay area. He's asking 4 grand but if I got that one it would be with the intention of doing a full rebuild and I'm thinking it would have to be at least half that, what do you guys think?

I got some more pics from the guy in the bay area, honestly it's almost unbearable talking to the guy. I was trying to get some more details from him but he kept going on and on about the difference between trailer tires and auto tires. If he was easier to communicate with I'd probably pursue this one but he spends the whole time on the phone trying to convince me that it's turn key instead of answering my questions.

Here's the pics if anyone is interested...

You would be dollars ahead going with that first one.  It will still be a project making it your own.  And you will have instant gratification rather than a money pit that takes up space.

It's actually really nice and only "needs" some minor stuff.
Mainly someone to use it.

I'm not sure what he wants.
He just goes back and forth on if he wants to sell it or not.
The 454 Chevy was a fresh motor when we put it in a few years back and I know he hasn't used it a whole bunch.
I freshened up the pump as well.
Berk G bowl, A imp, droop, diverter (that belongs to me)
Minor interior tips and tears.
He bought and installed new Imco aluminum tanks a year or two ago.
All the gauges work to my knowledge.
The gel is in great shape.
Literally just needs a buff
I want to say he has a bimini top for it but not 100% certain.
Trailer is solid with all new hubs and bearings.
He does have the rear jump seats and engine box.
It's a great boat considering it came with a C bowl, and an olds.

G bowl is a split bowl, for being able to add a droop, wedges, etc.
C bowl doesn't have a split- but can still have a diverter, rideplate, etc
They are can be swapped.
