How old were you and your friends when you first went to the lake/river with your friends and no parents?  This issue is rearing its ugly head at my house. This is going to be a 3 day deal. I think at Havasu. Things have changed a lot since I first went.

I was 18 and went with a friend who had his own boat. We both had boating experience and were able to be safe and still have fun.

the weekend i turned 18 left at 3 am got there at 6 am and stay in my truck cuz i couldnt afford a room lol

18 with my girlfriend (Now my wife) in pop's boat, Mr. Whoopie.  Some of the best memories of our life. 

I was 16 or 17. Stayed at our mobile in big river.

so theres some unanswered questions....

Who's boat is he taking? his own? yours? going with friends who have a boat?

was he raised on the river/lakes? has he been around boats a lot and knows the common sense of boating? or is this something new to him?

Frank, sorry in advanced, but I was boating by myself at 13 years old on the Rogue River in Oregon....115 horse Mercury outboard jet (tiller) on a 17' sled...I was not allowed to go to fast water, but fished in the slow shallows of the lower Rogue...Good times!!!

A lot has changed since then, My call is 18 y/o...Old enough to vote, old enough to boat...

I would feel better about some sort of responsible chaperon though  Oh and no  at all.

Brad, I purposely did not put in too much info so as to get a more varied set of responses. Gonna have a talk to the parents of the kid whos house they will be using. Heres what I know.
3 Kids. 2 are 18 one 17.
No boats or PWC's.
I told my son no beer (We will see how that goes).


We have not done any boating in the last few years, and just a little when they were young. But my son is extremely capable and smart. What gets me is that he is not as much of a "leader" as he should/could be. I am more worried about peer pressure than his direct actions.

I have a saying about my boys because they are so different. "If I am ever in any kind of trouble I would want Brandon by my side. Bebo will get me killed before I hit the sidewalk."

Frank, your last sentence says it all....He sounds like a responsible Joe (or Brandon   ) and I would say it would make his day to be able to do this....The only question is......Are his friends people you would put your trust in?  That there is the hard part..


I would let my 16y/o daughter do anything she asked of me, but it would totally depend on which "friends" she is with....My son on the other hand.........Uh...MMMMM no way in hell...

Austin - first off much respect for serving our country. Secondly, you are right, I did ask. No hurt feelings here.

GT - Thats the whole thing. Who he is going with. When I was 18 my dad let me borrow his car, and take 2 of my 16 year old buddies to Glamis for 3 days.  The difference is I had a lot more respect from my dad for my level of truthfullnes. Not saying I was always truthfull, who is? But I never wanted to let my dad down, not that my son intends to. But the parents of the other kids even wrote emergency medical notes. I promised my dad no beer and stuck to it! I never in my life had to sneek out of the house because if I was going to get drunk, even at 18 I would let my dad know how I was getting home or where I was staying. Just a matter of respect for him.

I think I will probably let him go, but let him know what he stands to lose by way of respect.

life is a bitch did you ever think that you come to the day when he ask you to do what he's doing things was alot diff when we grew up my dad would just kick my ass for looking at him funny but still had lots of fun did'nt drink and still don't sounds like your kid will do just fine have faith in him you forsure love the kid or you wouldn't be worried make you tell him you do love him good luck
