I hate....

I fricken hate tire chains! Decided to go up to Brianhead, Utah to teach the wife how to snowboard before we head to Colorado for a week. Get up to the top of the mountain just fine(no chains) until a snow plow jumps out from a side road and almost wipes out the truck. Dumb A@@ put more snow on the road then he took off(barely made it out of that!

Decide to put the chains on before for we go boarding (dont want to be tired and sore and put chains on) not really happy with the fitment of them, seem loose but whatever. go boarding, have fun, etc. Days over, snowing like mad(happy i put the chains on) start driving and hear the chains hitting something...what the hell! Look under and the chains are hitting the leaf springs...GOD DAMN IT!

So come to find out the chain tightners that come with the chains are not enough to "tighten" them properly. found a sports store on the mountain that happened to have another tightner...thank god. Piece it together and down the mountain we go...at 10 mph, because the truck is vibrating so bad that I am worried...made it down, took them off...never again.

that sucks man yea i would rather have 4wd and not use it then not to have it. I been in that boat before so i bought a 4wd plus im always in the desert anway sorry about your crappy experience glad you had fun though looks like we are getting some snow now locally but that mountain gets to crowded

We were going to go to Bhead mid-week but the weather report was talking about temps under 10 D-frikkn-grees. Was it really that cold and windy. I sure had wanted to go right after NewYears but that didn't sound too fun especially for the kids. But a couple of days from now in SoCal looks to be epic. Glad everybody is safe. Always drive on the defensive.

I never used chains after getting my Jeep 4x4, but ...

TIP FOR PUTTING ON CHAINS:
use a small block of some sort (piece of 2x4, whatever) that fits between the chain strands; spread the chains out in front of the tires; place the block about half way up the chain; drive the vehicle over chains up and on the block; now the tires are raised off the ground and you'll have free movement of the chains so assure are tight enough when installed.

Great idea, luckily I haven't had to do tire chains in a long time but I can make that recommendation to a lot of people.

There was only 2 lifts opened because of the wind gusts, but it was only 25ish...not to bad. I have been in Big Bear when it was colder. They are getting snow thru Monday and then the week should be killer!

Years ago I had a 4WD Dodge Ramcharger that I put a ton of parts into, locker up front, limited slip in back, 35" mud/snow tires, traction bars, winch, etc etc etc... the truck was a bulldozer with tires instead of tracks and it would go anywhere. I decided to take the family to the snow, CHP told me to put chains on my tires or turn around and go home. Freakin' ridiculous.

They pulled that on me once; I promptly told them 'sure thing, I'll pull up in front of this group of cars'; I pulled over just in front of the line of cars, got out, walked around my Jeep, made sure CHP attention was on other cars coming up, got back in and drove up the hill

It's people like you that are gonna get me killed some day. I know its a PITA and that the CHP sometimes jumps the gun a bit but frozen rubber will not bite on ice. How much do you suppose the ticket would have cost you, had they seen you disobey their orders? Bet you would have bitched about it for months too.

Just got back from bishop... same story with a 87' Blazer and 35's. we were just headed up 395 to mess around so it didn't kill our plans.

time for those fancy cables... fit my truck like a glove and never any problems

Doubt it; on all counts.
I'll match my driving skills against yours or anyone elses in snow, wet, try, whatever; have you had any accidents? caused any accidents? I have a big ZERO and I've been driving for 30+ years! That's simply because I drive safe and watch the others on the road;

Havent sold them yet, but i think I will end up buying cables for the simple fact that I dont want my truck vibrating apart!

Cable's cause massive vibration also... Spent the last week in Mammoth. Got 6-8 feet of snow. And guess what, no chains for me! Guess how many times my 2wd Dodge 150 slid around? Not at all.

So I made the 14 hour drive to winter park, colorado yesturday leaving at midnight and I have to say the drive was chain free! Ran into 20 foot visibility fog with semis going by me at 50(nuts) Snowing almost the whole time since the colorado state line to Winter Park, but the Snow Plows were out in force doing an excellent job!

Well see how it goes!
