rogers jet boat
« on: May 03, 2015, 05:04:23 PM »
A buddy of mine at work has a rogers jet boat thats been sitting in his back yard for years. I don't know much about rogers boats.. Are they any good? I know its going to be a decent little project just didn't know if it would  be worth it, any guidance would be much appreciated. He only has two photos, ill work on getting some more. the interior is all ripped and weathered needs to be replaced has a bbc says it ran when he parked it 3 years ago. The hull seems pretty solid no cracks or damage paints shot. He said he give it to me for 1500 doesn't have any paper work on it at all.. comes with trailer

That thing has $1,500 worth of parts on it. Looks like a good start. Plan on turning every bolt at least once.

I don't think you could get hurt. Financially anyway. Lol

Rogers are great boats, but with any boat, its only as good as its been kept. If its been uncovered and had water sitting in it - the stringers, floor, etc (ie anything wood) could be rotted....and will take a ton of money to bring back to life.

It doesnt look like its been kept very well, even the anodizing on the AN fittings is rusted - but how does aluminum rust? lol

Looks like a cool boat with a lot of potential, but it all depends on how deep your pockets are too.

my buddy owns a engine rebuilding shop here in riverside and owes me some work from electrical ive done over the years for him, so he would at least go through that for me. im pretty sure it was covered, he just lives an a foggy area from the cow feilds. im thinking those fitting might be steal and the other ones are aluminum. the boat has a berkley jet no droop or place divertor has some cray dual cable steering that ive never seen before, dogs jumped in a ripped up the interior. thanks for all the insight!!! i will try to get some more pictures currently I have about 5 grand to start with.

Sounds like a Calgo steering set up. Plan on getting it built.

$5k might be enough. .... the interior and possible word damage are the killers.

Do you know what model and length?  Cyclone or Bonneville. If it's a Bonnevlle TR that's a fairly rare and desirable hull

That engine had zero hp. Because it won't be starting anytime soon. Lol.

Are you looking for a project? If you are then I'd say go for it, but if it fell in your lap and you are just thinking about it than you might want to find something that is running and been somewhat taken care of. For 5k you can find some pretty decent boats that are way further along then this. For instance (not my boat) http://slo.craigslist.org/boa/5002051985.html Like I said if you're looking for a project then have fun, but there are plenty of good ones out there.

I'd pass.  It has no title, and is a complete unknown to you.  Based on the rust on the fittings and the headers, the cylinders are toast.  And like Brad said, if the stringers and floor are soft, that's major rework.

You guys in CA have no shortage of boats to choose from.  Look for something else.  I've seen lots of (what appear to be) good boats listed in CA for $5k or less.  If you're really in no hurry, wait until September.....

Just my 2cts.

I'm a big fan of Rogers boats as most here know. But if you got 5 grand and want to be in the water soon, I'd but a complete boat. Even a complete Rogers.
Without paperwork I'd buy it as a future race boat. The flat deck Super Cyclone is not as good as a bubble deck for resale either.
If you want and are going to keep the Rogers then it may be worth the effort and money,  $1500 - $2000 for upholstery, $1000.00 minimum to tear down the motor,
pump $$$???, trailer tires, bearings ??? and there's still the title issue.
Would still like to see more pics.

Okay well I talked the guy to giving it to me for 1200, he's putting new tires on the trailer, my engine guy said 1500 worst case scenario. do I buy it and part it out after I go through the engine? What a fresh rebuilt 454 go for $3000?

If it was made in the 60s or earlier it would not have an HIN.

The fuel fittings look to be JIC industrial stuff, that's why they are rusted. Way better than crap aluminum fittings in my opinion.

If you do buy it make sure you take care of fixing the paper work before you drop a bunch of money into it. AZ will require you to bring it here to be inspected to get a ID number assigned to it. Not sure what CA does.

The rusted fittings are definitely not aluminum. I stopped by on my way home. I wanted to pull the valve covers off just to see what kinda parts are in there but I didn't have any tools with me. It's a shame he let it sit so long looks like it was pretty badass at one point.

In all honesty !! No matter what anyone says you are going to do what you want so with that being said if you like it you'll buy it weather it's a lot of work or not. Your not buying it for an investment !! Cause boats are holes that you just dump money into.!!! It looks like crap dirty !! Clean it then look at it and sit in it he'll make boat noises and  see if that's what you want! That's how you should look at it. The money does not matter . You will be upside down in it anyway!!!

Honestly I was just trying to help the guy out, and figured I good just start a project but now I'm thinking I should start with a hull that I really want, if it wasn't for me he'd probably just let it sit there for 20 more years. If anyone is interested in anything on here let me know cause I will probably just part it out.
