I know the 6.0 Powerstroke has a lot of problems.  A local GM dealer has a 2004 DRW Lariet with just under 100K miles for $18,000.  Assuming nothing has been done yet, what am I looking at to do preventatively?   Costs?  I don't expect to keep it a long time but I do want to drive to Alaska next summer.  Any experience with real world mileage info would be nice too.

buy an autogauge II.  make sure that once the motor is warm drive on the freeway with cruise set at 65 mph.  engine oil temp and engine coolant temp should be within 10 degrees of each other.  if they are more then that you have a clogged oil cooler.

dad has a 05 excursion with the 6.0.  all stock motor.  has aftermarket tires and wheels.  33" tires and were getting 14 mpg.

His next thing to do is buy an extended warranty aka bulletproof diesel system

I am a bad example because of the low mileage on my truck (just turned 30,000 miles) but I have a 2005 PSD F250 4X4 crew cab that I just took to Burley Idaho towing a pop up trailer that weighs a little over 3000lbs. We averaged 17.2 MPG and had the cruise set for 75MPH with the AC on and went to 4000 feet elevation 3 1/2 hours into the trip. This was a 13 hour drive.

I have had one problem with the truck when it was brand new (under 6000 miles) and it was fixed under warranty (they replaced the turbo charger) other than that, oil changes and fuel filters is all that has ever been done to it.

When I took it to Bakersfield to Ming a couple of years ago I had averaged 23.5 MPG and we went about 68 MPH (RPM's right at 2,000) which seems to be the sweet spot.

I have to put tires on it real soon and am going to go a couple inches taller to try to get the ideal cruising speed up to 72MPH....

You couldn't get this truck out of my hands without a fight....

All manufactures have their issues but at least you have someone you can trust if you are ever in a pickle.

ha!  i did not say chevys dont break, they do. but ... lets look at r
the resale value of each truck. fords on the bottom. hell dodge has a better resale than ford! and you know why cause they rattle and squeak and the interior is crap after 3 years.sorry ford guys but its true. dont get me wrong i love super dutys. just wont buy one.

Plan on doing the heads/ studs kit, they WILL go, just sayin. Go Get a 7.3 powerstroke, Mine has just under 500,000 miles, I plan on keeping it to 750k. Bangs out 21-22 empty, day cruiser (4500 lb) 17-18, 12k lb equipment trailer, 13-14. ALL stock,,3.55 gears, exept the kitty ran away and muffler fell out.

If your going to ALASKA next year you have to pass within a couple of miles of my place .you better plan on stopping in.

If im not mistakin Its a gauge that plugs into your obs port and can view anything. Pretty bitchin. I have 3 aero force scan gauges, their similar gauges but different company.

I'm with Tony. Actually, I think our trucks are the same year, etc. HOWEVER, mine isn't nearly as tricked out or nice as his. Stock wheels, no lift, vinyl floors (I can simply hose it out after a trip). Trucks are trucks to me, not a statement. BUT, very happy with it!

But no major issues with it, 155k miles, I had to have the FICM (hadda get a definition also, Fuel Injection Control Module) replaced 2 summers ago, cost me $1600, and I had the front suspension rebuilt (4x4, and had an exteme intermittent shimmy issue at highway speeds, mostly when towing) THAT cost me $4 grand, but then find out I got ripped off because I got a letter from Ford addressing the VERY same issue 6 months later. They listed the EXACT problem I was experiencing, and that the solutions were due to improper tires, and/or improper tire pressure)

We're in a lawsuit with the dealer on the 4k. I'm the kinda guy you DON'T wanna do that to. I'll spend 10k over the 4k you ripped me off for, and in the end will cost you 20k+ for doing it even though I'll never see that money again.

But, I have no complaints with my '97 F350! Good truck! The mileage, cannot be beat! I can head to Vegas, from here in Phoenix, and drive THAT god awful road, set the cruise at 70, and up over hill, dale, curves, mountains, etc, A/C on MAX, the only guage that moves is the boost guage, and I've gotten 20MPG dong so trailering a boat. Did 23MPG trailering to Big River this past fathers day weekend, beleive it or not! My brothers FIL has a Dodge Cummins he drives to here from Iowa all the time and can't belive the mileage I get.
