Whats the difference?  Does anyone run car tires on their trailers?  Any benefit either way?

Thanks GT.  I need new tires for my trailer and they want a lot more for trailer tires than car tires.  Not trying to be cheap but don't want to waste money either.

My trailer came with car tires from the mfg.  been using them for years and no issues.  But then my boat only weighs about 1700 pounds.

Greg, for the most part they are all good, BUT stay away from anything made in CHINA   They are the biggest P O S'S there is. Whether they are trailer, passenger, or even for big rigs.   Mark

In theory, trailer tires are supposed to have a stiffer sidewall and less lateral traction so they can skid / slide across the top of the asphalt during a turn instead of trying to keep the grip and stressing the axles and suspension. This should prolong the axle bearing life.

That said I have been running car tires on my car trailer for decades without issues, and the trailer tires on the boat are wearing out really quick.

I think most tire installers will tell you that trailer tire mfgs. tell you to replace every 3 years for safety.   

Check the weight carrying abilities and go with what ya know.

I got cars tires last year for $200 installed for 4. I think they wanted $90-100 each for trailer tires.
