I've driven six, owned one, and one was a Sanger shovelnosed hydro, the hydro scared me so bad I thought I would never drive another again, in fact still haven't. I don't mind a litlle "chine walk once in a while, but when there's no chines to walk :-\

I owned a 19' DeMarco with a 428 Ford, that boat really hated me, never could get it to hook up right, tried like 15 props, three different gear ratios, changed the cav plate sizes, I guess I'm more of a "slop counts for skill" kind of guy.

The other four were freinds boats, still like my jets and I/O's.

Maybe someday, always wanted an Eliminator Daytona with a Vee-drive, I'm just not there yet....

Previous boat was a 21' Campbell cruiser, V-drive, 72C B-W Velvet Drive, 427 BBC.  Pretty much restricted to big lake boating.  It was faster with less horsepower than now, but we're happier with safety aspects of the jet with younger kids around.

Cheers, Mark

I hadn't driven a v-drive in years (probably 30) until I had a chance to buy my Sanger mini cruiser/casale/turbo400 last fall. Since my son has the same hull with a berkeley jet (but with more HP), I've been able to make some real comparisons. The steering feels very different and the v-drive turns very well (sharp) to the left (port), but takes a w i d e arc when turning right (starboard). Although I have reverse with the turbo 400, there is very little turning ability. The jet has a better hole shot, but the v-drive planes faster (1800 rpms), and is more responsive between 2500 and 4000 rpms. The v-drive is noiser (v-drive and trans sounds) and seems to ride lower in the water to about 4000 rpms, when it really loosens up and feels like it wants to take off. My guess is that top speeds are comparable even with the HP differences (400 vs 550). At cruising speed--35-40 mph--the v-drive is turning under 3000 rpms where the jet is at 3500+. I love being able to cruise the 5mph zone in first gear and in a straight line, and the fuel economy seems to be 50%-75% better in the v-drive. On the other hand, I still worry about all the $$$ hanging under the boat.

All that said, I'm having a blast with the v-drive, and I think with a little work--more HP--it has more potential performance than the jet. You know, Dad always needs to win.

Besides the roost  O0

Availability and price are big factors in favor of jet boat ownership.

Also if you like to pull water toys/ski it is nice insurance for the person in the water. (Just don't suck up the rope :banghead:)

I grew up in a flatty. And my 1st boat was a flatty. I dunno even with a kidney belt, it seemed like at the end of the day I still had to pour my spleen out of my shoes. Don't get me wrong I've had many many good times in a flat wot just coming down to touch the water every 30 ft of so.lol
