It is, and that looks like a flame arrestor to me! Not all of them are the soup can sized, over restrictive things that resemble a collander. They actually make some USCG approved decent ones these days, that one looks like a K&N.

That filter you have is a Fram automotive deal, K&N makes the USCG deal, it will have an SAE # assigned to it, they are typically huge too, they don't flow for crap....

My Blue My Wad actually had all marine equipment on it save the carb (Which was going to be replaced with a new intake and marine 850) Don't think that was the issue, RedNeck wiring (Jeremy can attest, and I kinda ignored as 'I'll get to it this winter'), and a leaking or 2 leaking fuel tanks probably caused this.

That might be a bit harsh...

FWIW, if your powerplant is not up to USCG spec, I would run the boat without the cover, one for the added ventilation and two because you can see when shit happens before it happens...

This situation could have happened to virtually anybody, I have seen it more times than seems possible. This could have been any number of things, we can only speculate now but probably a fuel fill connection or a bad fuel pump diaphram, any number of things could have caused this issue...

I watched a boat at Lake Shasta start the engine at the dock, the dude did everything right, bilge blower, opened the engine cover to have a look see, then started the engine and BAM, blew the engine cover completely off the boat and had a big fire ball roll out. It snuffed out almost immideately and there were only a couple of small little fires we put out with water from the lake with our hands...Turns out it was a bad battery. We took the battery out of his pickup and cleaned up from the explosion (acid everywhere) and put the battery in the boat and off they went, ran it all week long (they were camped right next to us)..

Like I said, you just never know......

Thanks Frank, and I know that. I was just clarifying the situation and condition of the boat. Nordie and I beleive that possibly the backup battery that would only take a partial charge and was disconnected from the system may be to blame too. If a battery burst and there were fuel fumes in there, well instant small hydrogen bomb possibly. Compound that theory with maybe the blower failed too, more problems.

Who knows, but as Glenn said, can happen to anybody. Blower coulda quit working, the list can be a mile long. Unless I can recover it reasonably (Or am forced to), we'll never be able to know anything except what I was told by the people on the boat. As I said in the other thread, I'll never take anyones word on Turnkey again, it's gonna come apart like the Moo did and go together systematically (Which only took a month, really).

One of my peers at work is a very experienced diver and has recovered boats there before. I need to call the marina to see if it'd be OK to dive the site and see if it's even possible. There may be hope to at least save an engine and pump.
