I see you argue this point a lot on here as I've been searching for the answer. What's your opinion on this just turn the gate valve down a lil bit or something else. I closed it 2 1/2 turns and it didn't come off again but coulda been loose to begin with but still never seen over 125 deg

Flow is a derivative of pressure. No?
Less pressure, less flow, less flow, less pressure.
This assumes the outlets are unrestricted.
By installing a valve (I like 3/4" gate valves), if you reduce the flow into the engine, this reduces the pressure and increases the heat transfer from the engine into the water.
The proper procedure for adjusting the valve are simple.
First get the boat on the water and fire it up and allow to idle, while idling, slowly close the gate valve until you see some temperature rise. Try to get out to settle out at about 150°F.
Once stable, take it for a quick run, the temperature will likely drop, this would be normal. If it heats up, you need larger dump lines, really cold and they could be a bit smaller.
Typically an engine under 500 horsepower needs about a 7/16" outlet fitting inside diameter.
Anything over about 600 horse should have two dump lines at about 3/8" each.
The regulators really aren't necessary, they just make slop count the same as skill.
It's my opinion that people put way too much trust in them.
