K yea there's already a valve it was all the way open I closed it 2 1/2 turns but temps were still barely over 100 deg so next time I'll close it some more and go from there

The way I understand it the gate valves limit flow not pressure, so a regulator will solve that end of the problem and for me it made it a lot easier to dial mine to about the 150-160 range at both idle and cruise. I used a brass residential plumbing style unit

Where do you put the regulator?  Does anyone have a link to one?

I'll have too look at mine tomorrow to see where we put mine. I believe it was before the gate valve but could be wrong. I'll send pics when I get to my shop

Just a simple question. Not a poke.

How in God's name can you limit flow without reducing pressure?

Physics 101.

This seems misguided.

I see you argue this point a lot on here as I've been searching for the answer. What's your opinion on this just turn the gate valve down a lil bit or something else. I closed it 2 1/2 turns and it didn't come off again but coulda been loose to begin with but still never seen over 125 deg

I never took physics.

If your saying you don't need a regulator, that sounds misguided to me. Maybe the gate valve does reduce the pressure slightly as well but it's not a regulator. The gate valves are used to adjust temperature, the regulator adjusts the pressure. That's how I've been schooled, and for me at least I learned through experience i made too much bowl pressure to not have a regulator. Gate valves did not drop the pressure enough while keeping my engine at a reasonable operating range

Flow is a derivative of pressure. No?
Less pressure, less flow,  less flow, less pressure.

This assumes the outlets are unrestricted.

By installing a valve (I like 3/4" gate valves), if you reduce the flow into the engine, this reduces the pressure and increases the heat transfer from the engine into the water.

The proper procedure for adjusting the valve are simple.

First get the boat on the water and fire it up and allow to idle,  while idling, slowly close the gate valve until you see some temperature rise. Try to get out to settle out at about 150°F.

Once stable, take it for a quick run,  the temperature will likely drop, this would be normal. If it heats up, you need larger dump lines,  really cold and they could be a bit smaller.

Typically an engine under 500 horsepower needs about a 7/16" outlet fitting inside diameter.

Anything over about 600 horse should have two dump lines at about 3/8" each.

The regulators really aren't necessary,  they just make slop count the same as skill.

It's my opinion that people put way too much trust in them.

The way above has no moving parts,  almost idiot proof. Almost.

And I don't argue, I educate with resistance. Lol

I understand how going to multiple dump lines would drop the pressure by eliminating a bottleneck, but personally I'd rather stick with the regulator as it works great for me, sounds like just two differant opinions and ways of doing things to me. I don't think one is necessarily wrong and one right even if my "physics" education is wrong haha

The entire point being,  if your not making the horsepower, dual dump lines would keep the engine too cold.

Your pressure relief valve literally just keeps the WOT pressure in check, that's it.

What controls the temperature?

This is where the valve comes in and really shines. It does both jobs quite effectivelyand for very little financial out put and no moving parts.

Not bashing you at all and yes, I agree, different trains of thought.

No worries, I'm not getting offended or anything. I know the only thing the regulator does is keep the peak pressure in check, but that's vital to me. I run aprox 700-750hp and it makes a lot of pressure. I would rather keep that pressure in the bowl where it belongs than dump any more water through my engine than necessary as well. I would also be worried that with multiple dump lines that I wouldn't keep any engine temp personally. I know a lot of people that run my same setup and also works well for them

Great insight on temp control and regulation. I've always relied on the 3/4" gate valves too; even on a 650 hp twin turbo setup it worked fine. Seems like this situation could've been solved with a tighter hose clamp and a few turns of the valve 🤓.
GT you are like the jet boat encyclopedia. Appreciate your contribution on all of these threads. Bcouey, now you have me considering something new with the regulator theory.. It would be a difficult measure to see if it adds performance or longevity to the motor tho.

So I put a droop on never checked speed before droop and never dialed in the diverter but just a quick phone check told me 77mph in the middle of Elsinore me my dad and the boy. . I'd like to be faster but we'll get there. Anyone think high 80s close to 90 is unrealistic with my hull without a bottle😜 I'm turning 6,000rpms I'm sure I can squeeze a bit more by myself and trimming the diverter.
