Hardin Marine has a variety of wiring schematics available.  This is the engine harness for the Ford 460.

Switched Positive from the ignition to the positive side of the coil. Wire from the distributor goes to the negative side.  Is the rest of the wiring solid or do you have more to do?

Hot lead from battery to one post, other post to starter and then small wire from the start portion of the ignition switch to the small pole on the side.

The one with the S should have a yellow wire and the one with the I should probably be a red wire

The "I" terminal bypasses the ballast resistor increasing the voltage to the ignition coil during cranking to counteract the voltage drop caused by the starter motor.

So "I" on the solenoid goes to "+" on the coil.

When you put 12+ to the solenoid, it engages the starter motor. So that will likely be a yellow (or yellow with red tracer) wire coming from the "S" terminal on the key switch.

I set mine at 12* at idle to get started then 34* all in/3000rpm. I set idle at 1200 on trailer as you'll loose at least 200 under load/in water.

Possible incorrect material on the gear. Steel and cast are different.

If just the gear is worn, knock the roll pin out and replace it. Cheaper than a new distributor.
Unless you want a new one ..
