Cooling issue 455 olds

Any ideas? I have a 455 olds and it's running too hot, this is my setup water from jet to logs, logs to water pump plate, Tstat housing empty to snails....I do have a pressure regulator off the pump dumped overboard. Will too much pressure cause it too run hot? Picked up a pressure gauge on the way home from lake but need to check it on the water, motor runs cool on the hose. Thanks guys

What pump? Is there a chance the block is full of sand? What is your pressure regulator set for?

Thanks GT it's a C pump I had my 545 ford in this boat no issues then swapped motors out of my other jet boat it ran 160 in this boat. I pulled the hoses off at the lake at the Tstat and had water flowing. No sure pressure yet as I just bought a gauge today. Seems like I have lots of water/steam out of exhaust....what should my pressure regulator be set at?

It sure sounds like a restricted fitting or hose.

That's the crazy part, I pulled motor and dropped it in other boat didn't change any hoses or fittings

Well I think I found the problem hose off jet sitting under motor might have been constricting flow

I kinda got that, but there is closed cooling, pump assisted, primary secondary, preheat and dump, double pass, side loop. There are a lotta ways to skin that cat...

well last motor gave me a burn from the log, so i can't break the bank but want a good solution. guessing 50-60mph at 4k rpm and jst can't take another hit. any suggestions?

500 hp BBC, well over 400 hrs, cooling system has ONLY a gate valve, (logs and snails) runs 135*-140*, all day long. 'Long' no wake zones, 150*-155*

Berkeley set it up right the first time...Just sayin'

Sounds like the relief valve is set too low. You'll know once u get the gauge on there. Just keep tightening till u see 15ish at wot. I'd think the block was clogged but u said it runs fine on the hose.

Ok pull your freeze plugs out and clean out all the valleys u seam to have some sand stuck inside your block. I'm running a 455 too and I never see above 100 on temp where ever I go. U want to set your gate valve down to 12 psi from the pump.

Well logs n snails dont even need a valve cause the water floooooows

the issues happen when you have ot headers AND not enough of a path for the water/pressure to exit = 2 much inlet not enough outlet

You definitely need a valve. On all applications.

Imo.

The valve should be throttled to obtain some temp at idle.

Gate valve on my JUNK, all four of them, 3, yes three with headers... NEVER a 'pressure relief valve'...just a gate...'Keep Is Simple Stupid'... aka the kiss method....

U have 3 people telling u need a gate valve GTJETS and MASH ON IT two of the people that got me on the water with no problems. These guys have bin on here the longest they know their shit always kiss bro. And like I said u got some blockage in your block clean it out. This is my olds and I love it.
