I've seen all sorts of theories on this. Even in this thread?
First, break in the cam. That involves removing the inner valve springs and limiting the fluctuating rpms to 2500 at best to avoid valve float. This is best done on a stand or bench, but can be done on the boat with the drive line out. Then change the oil. This is done to both wear mate the cam to the lifters, and to harden the cam surface somewhat. Your bearings will like this too.
Do this for at least an hour, IMO, but times vary. This will knock of all rough spots and get the bearings in and good! Change the oil.
Then Oh yeah, to break in the rings, etc, run it like you stole it! They're already mostly seated, they need to seat where they'll most likely hit so go for it!. And after a couple hours of this thrashing, change the oil again.
Do you have enough oil for this? lol

BTW, I'm from the east coast, and was told all this, almost ver batim, by Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins back in the day regarding a Nova I had built. Stuck with me ever since.
