Need to replace my starter making a weird grinding screeching sound when I turn the key so I'm just going to replace it. My question is how do I know if my flywheel is 168 tooth or what tooth it is period? ?

Maybe pull the part number off of the old starter and use that as a reference

I believe the most important part is to make sure it spins the correct way

The direction it spins is crucial. If it mounts down below the headers I think it needs to spin reverse of a stock truck starter. Confirm this but I definitely recall this issue in the past.

One time when I was a youngster we replaced the starter on our bbf, got everything back together and started cranking, and cranking until we realized it was spinning the motor the wrong way. I guess the spray of fuel coming out of the carb should have been a good indicator...

This is Absolutely, fundamentally, WRONG....Its just a jet boat...All jet boats are STANDARD rotation, PERIOD.

As far as the O.P.'s Question, Using the year of the boat, 1977?  1995?... Just get a starter for a 19xx F250, 460 auto, etc.

There is Summit, Jegs, any number of marine superstores/mail order places...

Swap out the USCG screen if it has one, to the new starter...BAM boats ready...

Are you sure that is correct?

Call IMI Performance Products and buy a hi torque mini starter. I've had one on my BBF for a few years with zero issues.

If the starter mounts in the bell, behind the flywheel,  it's considered reverse rotation,  if it mounts in front of the flywheel, it's considered standard.

You can pull the starter off your F250, bolt it in and go.

I think a little something was lost in translation.

Wow take it easy tiger. You are wrong my friend because there are 2 styles of starters for most all jet boats. Like GT said there are regular mount styles and there are the reverse mount that go on the bell housing.

I had purchased a replacement starter from a boat shop that was intended for the bell housing mount. When it was installed in the stock location it was turning the motor backwards. Even experienced rebuild shops can take a regular starter and wire it to spin the opposite direction.

Now you are blowing it out of your butt. 

The starter armature and Bendix are completely different between the two. The only thing a genny shop can do is reverse the stator. The rotor and Bendix will need to be swapped or for the proper rotation unit.

Ok Einstein. You win; you also lost me but you are the winner. The point I was making is the rotation of the starter is important. I speak the language of a layman who does this for a hobby, not a living.

OK,

Layman's terms,  how would the bendix throw on the threaded output shaft is it was rotating in reverse?

Answer;  it simply won't.

The way the Bendix moves is the rotation of the shaft "screws" it forward. Also, the Bendix is a one way bearing assembly that would "free wheel" if rotating backward.  So it would never drive even if the action of the Bendix is mechanical like a GM starter.

Not trying to be a wise guy. Just keeping the information as real and accurate as possible.

Thank you for the explanation. Makes sense. I was under the impression a starter could be made to rotate in reverse but probably applied the wrong terminology for the execution.
