Tom Papp Memorial 2016 Jan 9
« on: November 29, 2015, 12:23:39 PM »
Doc here from Elsinore with the latest on the cove water level. The water is 5 feet deep in the middle and the entry is closing so fast there can be no side my side racing. Unless we get rain soon we will have to do this at the private beach next to Cranes or at Weekend Paradise. There should be a good turn out of Flat Bottoms for the Jan 1 Flat bottom Reggata at Weekend Paradise as well.

Not sure if it is funny or sad to see how this has changed from a memorial event to a big party with no real mention of the man.  I would bet that fully 50% of last year's attendees had no idea.

I'd guarantee that at least 50% didn't know WHY it was held on that particular day.

You mean it's not just some random day in the middle of winter giving everyone a reason to pull the boat out and get shitty... Wow, who would have thunk.

Well why don't you guys explain for us newbies why it's held on that date?

I've heard of Tom Papp and understand he was a guru and legendary for helping anyone who came to him, but I for one don't know why the memorial is in the winter. Is it his birthday or passing or something that was on that date?

A group of his friends decided to go to the lake to remember him and what not a few weeks after his passing. I know the first one was about 10 or 15 boats

I was one of the original few guys that got together on that day to remember Tom Papp. I spent many hours at the shop just hanging out and even would help out on the weekends. Tom was one of those guys that would drop everything to help you out or answer your questions, and it didn't matter if you were a long time customer or you just walked in of the street, he was a wealth of knowledge in the boating community.  I was fortunate to know Tom for just a few short years before the boating community lost this legend on January 1st of 2007.  This gathering started out as hand full of guys from the shop that got together to run the boats that Tom built or worked on and to share the stories that we all had of Tom Papp and Tom Papp Racing "The Home Of The Fast Guys" I'm sure there are guys on here that knew him better than I but that's the short reason behind this gathering.

I've heard that the guys that started this at one point thought of moving the gathering to just the parking lot because of the amount of people showing up and acting like idiots. This isn't a race event, it's a remembrance, I'm new to this and never knew Tom, but I would tow my boat out there and never put it in the water out of respect to be a part of it this year. Your thoughts...

I don't think there's anything wrong with showing up, launching the boat, and being part of the event. I went in 2012 and again 2014. I saw friends, made new ones, and had a great time talking boats with everyone. I don't think anything I was doing is disrespectful in any way to the man's memory. It's a positive event in my eyes. By attending and participating we are keeping this sport alive. I'm going to attend this year as well. I'll see you guys out there!

That's what its about Jordan, keeping the memories alive and making new ones, meeting new people and checking out some bad ass rides. But most of all having fun and being safe.

I agree with Jordan " if people are coming together in your remembrance that speaks volumes as to the mans character . If it was the opposite way around what would that tell you??? I for one pledge not to be one of those idiots that everyone  has been talking about. I don't think it's a question of who deserves  to be there or not who knows the history and who does not".  I am there to honor and pay respects to a man that was highly respected in the boating community . I hope to see some of my SCJB people , that would just be an added bonus 👍😎
