Dialed Pump?
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:41:30 PM »
Ok, so after doing a lot of reading mainly from this site, a lil from other sites, and looking at my Marine Power manual.  I've come to the conclusion that I'm not gonna be able to spin more than 4600 rpm and get about 48 mph (non GPS), with current set up (stupid me, should have read the manual first :banghead:) With that being said, I want to get the most out of my pump... Set up Carrera 202xr with 330hp marine power eng, American Turbine AT 309 with inducer, A impeller, and SE Sport Loader. Pump was rebuilt last season by GS Marine.  Other than a droop is there anything else I can do to maximize my pump to get a lil more out of it?
I pulled these questions from another thread and I'll answer as best as I can.

What motor? Marine Power 330 hp sport pack
Advanced timing at over 3000RPM? unknown
Vacuum generated at WOT? unknown
What cam? unknown (stock)
What carburetor? Holley 4150, 750 cfm (just installed)
What ignition? magnetic (stock)
Verified the linkage at WFO? me (doubt it!)
Any clue where the cam timing is? nope

Curious, what do you expect to gain out of a droop? IMHO you don't have the ponies to support what it is designed to do.

The first thing that hurts the speed potential of a jet is weight and the position of the weight in relationship to the center of gravity (COG).

A droop is designed to lower the thrust level of the nozzle and improve bow lift, if you don't have the HP all it will do is make it more difficult to plane.

I have some ideas on what you need to do, but at the same time don't have enough information about your boat.

Can you post up as much about your boat as you can think of?

Delta pad?
Open bow?
Fuel tank location?
What does it weigh?
Hooked hull?
Trim nozzle?

Just looking at what you have posted, this boat should do 55MPH at sea level without much trouble.

Reading about droops, they claim they are supposed to increase top end speed by a couple mph. I'm definitely not gonna spend the cash if it doesn't make sense.
I can only answer a coupe of your questions.

Gonna sound dumb, but I don't know what the delta pad is

Open bow, yes

two fuel tanks towards the aft on port and starboard side

unsure of weight, seems freaking heavy (compared to my first boat 17' finish line)!

no hook

hydraulic place diverter .

If I could get er up to 55 I'd be one happy dummy! ;D

A delta pad is quite easy to explain..

All it is is a small flat pad about the width of the pump intake and tapers toward the front of the keel. Basically it helps get the boat on step (plane).

Do you have any pictures of the boat running flat out? I would like to see how the boat rides. Do you know where the water breaks?

How much crap do you keep in the boat?, just having too much junk in the trunk can cost you a couple precious MPH.

Also, this is goofy, but are we talking GPS mph or pitot tube speedometer mph?

Heavy hulls are tricky to get to work, IMHO if you saw a speed improvement with the droop I would be fairly shocked.

Thanks for explaining the delta pad! I'll have to check it out. I don't have any pics of the boat running, and not to sure where it rides.

On average it's myself wife, kid, dog, and cooler. Note that I'm no slim Jim though!

Haha that's funny! I was just thinking that I could be doing all this, and it could be just my speedo's not working properly! It's a pilot tube not GPS. I've haven't used a GPS yet. Just downloaded an app to test it out, and the app seems pretty accurate in the truck!

I'll work on the things you asked for. Hopefully I can get the boat out on the the water next weekend!

Ive been trying to help Sevans out and have some answers to the above questions:

What motor? Marine Power 330 hp sport pack
Advanced timing at over 3000RPM? 32* (the timing on his engine is locked out at 32*)
Vacuum generated at WOT? unknown
What cam? (stock)
What carburetor? Holley 4150, 750 cfm (just installed)
What ignition? Stock HEI
Verified the linkage at WFO? Full throttle
Any clue where the cam timing is? Stock

Please note that i dont know Jets, and their requirements, but from what ive read/learned i think he is pretty much topped out for his combination. I think if he were to do a cam and try to make some more power that 55 may not be impossible? Correct me if im wrong.

I hope this helps

The combo- 454, 330 hp & 'A' impeller, @ 4600 sounds about right.
The problem is weight, 2200 is very conservative for that hull. try 3000, maybe more. Mines in the 28-2900 lb range, and a few more HP, and is still in the mid 50's.
As long as the bottom of the hull is straight, I'd look into a ride plate and possibly adjustable trim tabs. My lil bowrider, a Saguaro, 325 hp, 55 @ 4600 rpm, with ~500 lbs of people + gear in it, and probably weighed 1900-2100 lbs., without people and gear.

Hope this helps

yeah i agree with mash on it. sounds about right with your combo. Droop snoot wont help ya much unless ya up the HP. Shoe and a ride plate and trim tabs would help ya out.

What type of jet ovator do u have I have read that if u have the old style as u do it can act like a parachute and slow  your boat down and loose a few mph.

I replaced my place mini droop with a place droop and ride plate combo on my 21' open bow. Went from 57 to 58 on GPS.

If I had another hundred or two hundred horsepower the droop would really do more of what it's supposed to. Not a good comparison because I had a small droop on it when I bought it. Pump was done by MPD, he massaged my original aluminum impeller and have me the option of going with an inducer. I declined on the inducer but I wish I would have taken him up on it.
