My new diverter got here today...
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:00:31 PM »
...and thanks to alot of good input, I decided on the hydraulic unit.  I called Tom @ JBP and like you guys told me, he did have the screaming deal and was a wealth of info as well...Thanks alot Tom.

Imagine my excitement when I saw the precious boxes sitting on my front porch!!

So here is povertyjet itself, nothing fancy...12JC...455

So I take everything out of the box and start to disassemble the old nozzle, thinking how smooth and easy this was going, when I noticed the first problem...my rudder was not going to fit the diverter...not a problem I will just have to get a Place rudder later.

I was unscrewing the upper pin set-screw when I had my second problem, stanless bolt + aluminum + long time = siezed bolt = broken bolt head...  After drilling 6 small holes around the old set screw to remove it, destroying the old nozzle in the process, the old nozzle and reverse gate is out.

I then test fit the diverter (minus the cylinder) to check cable lengths and correct steering and reverse operation.  Everything worked fine...when I notice my third problem.  The new diverter is like a glistening piece of jewelery, and my old bowl and transom adapter looks like it was badly painted with house paint and a crappy brush...In fact my entire transom could look a whole lot better

So I took off the transom adapter and am going to strip the paint from the bowl and the adapter and give them a fresh coat of white appliance epoxy.

Next update will be the completion of the outside installation of the diverter and clean up of the transom.

Just like your instructions say , at slow speed , point the diverter down and you wont need a rudder .

My opinion here for what its worth.. put the trimn in the center , go out and hold the boat at a steady speed in a straight line and move the lever or switch up and down a bit .Get a "feel" for how it affects your boat in terms of ride , handling and speed . Then experiment and experiment some more ! Stop the boat . put the trim down and flat foot it (when safe) as you accelerate start with up trim and see how the boat reacts , NEVER try to turn the boat with full up trim! safley experiment some more Know your boat!!

...So when I start to put on my diverter, I realize that my transom looks like crap.  Since then I have removed everything from the outside of the transom, filled many holes and sanded it.  Now I want to tape it off and paint it.  Any suggestions about a good paint that I can shoot or roll?

So the mechanical part of the Kona remodel is done.  Diverter, remote oil filter, complete re-wire, fuse panel, and engine compartment remodel...still would like a new distributor.

next re-carpet the floor, and try and rebuild the crappy seats...

Looks Great PJ! Can't wait to see pics of it in the water.

Riddle me this tho, I want to see how you fill the hydraulic pump reservoir, lol. I been eyeballing mine, and I think it's getting nervous, but since the cylinder is leaking a bit, I know I'm gonna hafta sooner or later.

Thanks Ray, take the plastic lid off the top of the pump.  There's a little fill on top.  You are probably going to have to take the pump off of the transom to get the lid off.

Gentlemen, I am the luckiest guy in the world.  When I get home my wife tells me "you got two hours to work on the boat before dinner is done, now get out there...oh and here's a beer"...seriously she really does.  She always has.  She is more of a gearhead than me.
