I think im about the third member from this board to take this project on. I plan on finishing it! It is rough but i also want to learn how to fiberglass and fill etc as needed so i figure if i screw this thing up its not a big deal. This project will take a LONG time as i do not have a lot of money to throw at it and will need to budget for everything. with that said the plans as of now (probably will change) include a fully forged 496 or possibly a stroked 440-500 some nitrous and a lot of big power. Whether this becomes a reality or not is one thing. I will start with the hull work first (actually already did) and i plan to document everything i do.

Before i get started with pics and what not i have a couple questions, as i am new to Jets. From the previous add i know it had a berkeley 12JG pump.
Do i have to replace it with this pump?
Will the intake that is in it work with other pumps?
I am considering doing a "setback" is this a good idea? Im looking to be in the 700-850 horse range.
Should i look at a different Berkeley pump?

you don't have to have a 12jg pump in it. almost any berk will work. Not a E though completely different. If you are going to do a set back now is the time. I would do a set back to get the hand hole cover out of the boat. That loader might have to go. It looks a little rusty and might be cracked. Good luck with the project, it will be a long road but totally worth it.

 That seems like a lot of power for a half stringer haul. Make sure the Haul can handle it before you build that monster motor You might be OK but I would look into it.

I have been told by a few people, who are held in high regard around here, that quarter stringers are fine for high ho motors. I don't know from personal experience, but I have never seen some rip the stringers out from torque either.

And i finished DA'ing the whole left side of the bottom of the boat. And even wet sanded it down so that i could go ahead and lay down some good primer. Up to this point i have just been using Rustoleum primer bought by the quart at Autozone. So this weekend ill finish scuffing up the rest of the boat and then hit the entire bottom with some Bulldog and some Polyprimer i bought that is high build and great for filling.





And heres the primer ill be hitting it with this weekend (if its not windy)

I dont have a pump yet to bolt up to it, but it looks like it might be "set back" already, what do you think?

No, looks to be in the stock location. I would set it back to at least half of the hand hole sticking out. I've seen a lot of them with full set backs and the run super hard.

Could you come up with some info on setting it back? I've never done it and I think I would have to cut a big chunk out. But I'm game

well, pull the intake. Get that done up with a shoe and ride plate. I would clean up the intake area and cut out how ever much you need to. glass back in the front part. I always put a bit more glass back than I should so I can grind make the intake go back in perfect.

If it were me I would set it back to where the hand hole of the jet is just outside of the transom. Can't really give ya an exact number but somewhere in between 2 and 3 inches.

Sorry for all the questions. But if I do that. There won't be any glass between the intake and where the transom is. Is that a problem? Structurally?

No really. The best think to do is add one or two pump braces too keep the intake from moving. Especially when ya got a lot of HP!

If i decide to set it back, but i build an engine with only somewhere around 450-500 hp would this negatively effect me?

Im still considering the 454 stroker, but i currently have an extra 350 and most of a 383 kit. I could build to make some pretty decent power but nowhere near 700 or so (and be reliable)

Great lake boat with 450 reliable hp.
Put it together.
Enjoy for many years to come.
There is a ton of work involved in making this hull handle properly with the deep entry that hull has.
