didnt really take pics, but got it home. Then stripped the interior.

There was a tiny bit of glass work i had to do. Priobably didnt HAVE to do it, but figured while i was in there. Also plugged and re-glassed the stringers. 3 layers of cloth

Last night, i primed and sprayed the bilge/transom/intake

The paint pics are really hard to get to come out right. Must have been lighting but it looks better in person

drove up to fresno friday night and picked up the mill for this thing.

LSX motor (6.0 liter technically called a LFA) All aluminum.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0125150929_zpslnolhip6.jpg&hash=f5db27105f27b11424280034e8cda3c131e3f0d6) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150929_zpslnolhip6.jpg.html)
Yes, i fixed the way it was mounted on the engine stand after this pic

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0125150941_zpsuoivqpmj.jpg&hash=2bb8fe37d5d2764fb7c332ef96675578a5993e3c) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150941_zpsuoivqpmj.jpg.html)

Pulled the motor down, and all of the bearings look brand new. This was the worst of the rod bearings
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0125150949a_zpsypnfsdyp.jpg&hash=0e5aab9fb035f234e484b39fda798680caf0df33) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150949a_zpsypnfsdyp.jpg.html)

All i have to say is this thing is LIGHT. The bare block weighs less than my engine stand i think.

Going to throw a couple sets of rod bearings in it (the ones i knicked when knocking the pistons out) rings, and throw it back together

Title: Re: 1970 Weiman

Well Christmas is starting to get here, got most of the parts to throw the lower end together.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0128151922_zpshshtn4gl.jpg&hash=a9280953107b2284a296b8f840b8d5b54165640a) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128151922_zpshshtn4gl.jpg.html)

Still waiting on Rod bearings and piston rings, then can start throwing the lower end together.

while i was organizing everything and getting parts together, i picked up some spray paint at O'Reilly's. It is by Duplicolor and called Metal Cast. My boat has a lot of pieces that were originally Anodized but the anodize is no longer colorful. So i googled this Metalcast stuff and the results looked good online. It is a 2 step process (3 if you add clear). Needless to say, I am very impressed.

After cleaning
Step one
Spray what they call "ground coat" I did one light coat, followed by 2 heavy wet coats
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0128152010a_zps6s5ogjgu.jpg&hash=7b3833fd610d800362b0772799614238e3d99515) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010a_zps6s5ogjgu.jpg.html)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0128152010_zpsqta7hhnu.jpg&hash=8376acb51e0d0c40b5865f354deef6a85c71149e) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010_zpsqta7hhnu.jpg.html)

Step two
Spray the color coat, this stuff comes in Red, Blue, and Yellow i believe. Same process as before, 1 light coat, then 2 heavy wet coats
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FIMG_20150128_203714_zpsbvf2nsox.jpg&hash=c23b2933085a732280254133df731301a71b54bb) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_203714_zpsbvf2nsox.jpg.html)

Then for good measure, i sprayed 3 coats of clear ontop of the red

Heres what the finished product looks like, you can see the red almost matches the anodized rub rail perfectly
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FIMG_20150128_210610_zps4cqxhobx.jpg&hash=c7e120d170ba7352213ec9c331966cb3e3d4de9c) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_210610_zps4cqxhobx.jpg.html)

And the carb bowl. Im going to break up the red with the silver (ground coat) I just cleared over the "ground coat"
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FIMG_20150129_074845_zpsujbfostc.jpg&hash=5718e48c366f162419146c98dcf61f0e68112548) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150129_074845_zpsujbfostc.jpg.html)

The red is really hard to photograph correctly. But its a nice deep red. It almost looks like a pinkish hue in the pics

That paint will wash right off with the slightest amount of fuel drips or spills...
Ask me how I know 😎

You will see what I mean when you go to adjust float levels.

I used some of the stuff a few years back? Looked great when it was first done? But didn't stay color fast for very long? I only used the rattle can clear? But it sure didn't like being out in the sun? Looks good tho! Hope it holds up for you!

Ordered an edelbrock Victor Jr that's been ported. Going to try a 750 double pumper first, night need an 850

Yes, simple and open cooling

Ha I know what your saying! Keep it up hopefully you can make the May trip. That will be Jim and my first SCJB trip for the year. Let me know when you go testing. We are shooting around mid April if everything goes right.

not much movement during the week. I spend most nights at the GF's house....  :screwy:

Last night i was home to run some errands, pay some bills etc. Got one of the heads assembled. These springs have a lot of pressure. They literally turned my (autozone style) claw compressor thing into a pretzel had to order the tool seen in the picture

Looks great, Steve!  That light 6.0 is gonna knock at least 200 pounds off the back of the boat compared to an iron-headed big block.  450hp at the crank shouldn't be too tough to get with the right cam.  It'll fly!!

Just a little bit of progress... finally got the right size pushrods and got around to polishing the rest of the ends of the heads, the front cover painted, and torqued.

Harmonic balancer installed and torqued  fyi (240 ftlbs, then 37 ft lbs, then 140 degrees) that was fun

With the cam i went with, and the compression ratio ill be at. Im willing to bet that 500-550 at the crank is more like where we will be at.

Well left work early to get some work done on the boat, and of course never works out like you think it will

I came home, soda blasted the intake manifold, And I have to say. The 15 pound soda blaster from Hartbor freight kicks some ass. But it does make a mess, but who cares it's baking soda!
Here's what the intake looked like after about 5 minutes of blasting  (aircraft stripper failed)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0220151702_zpsyqqetcfb.jpg&hash=5dfa2a0818281fdbb4a880a1979f4f48007d9568) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220151702_zpsyqqetcfb.jpg.html)

And I said it makes a mess...

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0220151742_zpsdbkfu8sr.jpg&hash=d1de3cb69105032796891d42409fd5f046f544f9) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220151742_zpsdbkfu8sr.jpg.html)

But all in all it worked pretty damn nicely.

After the soda fiasco. I turned to checking out the front motor plates I bought on eBay.

God I hope they work...

So I polished one real quickly just to see if I wanted them polished, painted, or raw aluminum
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0220151941_zpsnieob0fd.jpg&hash=4c32a17c8012e5fdb521aff431ac90d90402f802) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220151941_zpsnieob0fd.jpg.html)

After I did that I decided to start making my rear plate.

I used a transmission bellhousing for a template and went to town. Its hard to tell but I got the circle about halfway cut out, went to start on the other side and the damn Chuck for my jig saw died. It will not hold a blade anymore :-(

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0220152144_zpsjcpv0ycg.jpg&hash=099b1ec77ac6933da5f832b062d86c0cbb6a2cb0) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220152144_zpsjcpv0ycg.jpg.html)

So it was back to polishing

I did 0 prep on these plates. Just took them to the buffer with various grit rouges and different wheels. Here's one plate about half way through

So this weekend ended up busy with the family, but I still managed to get a little bit of work done on the boat.

Started out Friday night with the polishing above.

Saturday I woke up and went to harbor freight and grabbed a jig saw.

The same damn thing happens and the saw wouldn't hold the blade. So after tightening it down, I broke the collet
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0221150925_zpshlfk9k2s.jpg&hash=2ef140ab9495e1b8f304e12432bd09e9a4b236c3) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221150925_zpshlfk9k2s.jpg.html)

So back to harbor freight.... Again.
I decided to buy an "old school" saw. One where you have to bolt the blade in.

And I finished the cut, finally

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0221151107a_zpsb38ymmq1.jpg&hash=0dbb1232a56df8dac290bcb141568807922efa19) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151107a_zpsb38ymmq1.jpg.html)

Then I started on the rest of the plate.

About halfway through my third jig saw decided to catch on fire

(Hard to see in this pic)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0221151140_zpszrxeui0e.jpg&hash=a98e31cc1baed2d00109dd89c41237d794c7d07e) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151140_zpszrxeui0e.jpg.html)

After this I quit with the jig saws and used my scroll saw. About 5 blades later I had my rear plate. Woohoo!!

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0221151213_zps0iwfcilm.jpg&hash=732b735a42895555f8a1e847fe1323f0a4546dbc) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151213_zps0iwfcilm.jpg.html)

So plates are cut, I cleaned up the garage and decided to move on to cleaning the headers up and painting them

Cleaned them with an angle grinder and a wire wheel

Then shot a coat of vht flat black header paint.

I do not expect the paint to last forever. But I'm hoping until I get a stainless set off headers built

And finally, today I learned that the radio shack by my girlfriend's house is going out off business. And as such everything is 80-90 percent off

I ended up with all of these solderless connectors for a little less than 20.00

Made some progress this weekend on the Weiman.

Picked up a bandsaw. if you dont have one. I have to say this is the greatest tool ive ever bought...

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0228151628_zpsxhdoy7ku.jpg&hash=9acd4c86825a716defbe43bc374d2a1309eaa5ab) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151628_zpsxhdoy7ku.jpg.html)

got it for 150 off craigslist. It looks practically brand new, came with 4 new in the package blades. Even the "electronic measurement" works

Now that i have a bandsaw i could clean up the rear mount and start on the rest of my rail kit

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0228151629_zpsddaii8er.jpg&hash=1a9ca5fdbf5f6f980072e4c3f28ce07b0e3804c8) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151629_zpsddaii8er.jpg.html)

Attempted the router on the edges. Im not really happy with the way it came out

After a lot of trial and error, i found that my "truck" oil pan is way to deep for the boat. Its not even close to lining up

Here you can see where i cut that rear mount and used a different set of holes just to keep the pan off the bottom
 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0301151215_zpsjwcfe5gr.jpg&hash=bac1dadfa9aade01631c7e57a7f6f5b82599eb3a) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0301151215_zpsjwcfe5gr.jpg.html)

The motor is sitting on the pan, on the bottom of the boat here. Im still about 3 inches away

Something that worked for me on the router is having a guide piece for the roller bearing on the tip of the router bit to follow. I made the guide piece out of wood and smoothed it by hand as best I could. Clamped the wood and aluminum together and let the router follow it.

Not a lot of progress. Been very busy lately. And been working on the Bahner since the season is here and it need some work to get ready... (drive is off as we speak)

But i did win an oil pan on eBay it should be here today  O0  >:D  ;D  8)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2F_57_zpsum7cjvud.jpg&hash=c2fbc2bfda8e6e8cae0331b379e82d8000faade4) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/_57_zpsum7cjvud.jpg.html)

So that means i can start making mounts again......   >:D  >:D  >:D Hopefully i dont screw up this aluminum too... Thinking about making templates first this time

Last night, i figured i would finish making my MSD mount. I had the great idea to mount it to the head. Easy to get to, out of way of water, etc. But im just not sold on it.

I think it makes the damn MSD look bigger than the engine. Im 99% sure im shit canning the mount and going with the transom like this
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FScreenshot_2015-04-09-21-34-30_zpsxk90g3if.png&hash=815dafd8ce6edffc61848f548e7d77f85bd8b8b9) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Screenshot_2015-04-09-21-34-30_zpsxk90g3if.png.html)

And finally, i dropped my Impeller off with Chris at B1 a while back. Its done. After talking to him and talking about where this thing will make power, we decided to try a B- cut and go from there. He also detailed it for me

Yeah, the MSD will go on the transom along with a fuel water seperator, and the fuel pump.

Made some what i consider to be major progress this weekend. The Rail kit is in, and the mounts are made!  O0  O0  >:D  >:D

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0411151501a_zpsn3jsnstu.jpg&hash=a8457282bcfe2de527425da4eedd0645a19708a6) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0411151501a_zpsn3jsnstu.jpg.html)

I learned that i need to try and heat and bend the headers up a little more. As it  is right now they clear the transom but are a little close for my comfort
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0411151501_zpsauvq2w0s.jpg&hash=5da08db85e5d9a388d3fda7f6511289d1bd1e589) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0411151501_zpsauvq2w0s.jpg.html)

Front plates, i had purchased some bitchin billet motor plates online hoping they would work. Unfortunately they were about 1.5" to short in the front so i had to make these. Not CNC'd or Plasma cut but i think i did well
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0411151502_zps2oirg761.jpg&hash=21c9de58cdd7e26cd02f56765df3869c98c00987) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0411151502_zps2oirg761.jpg.html)

This rear plate works, and i'm just being picky. But im going to re-make it to give me just a tad more clearance under the oil pan.

Thanks Dennis. I'm gonna start on the bilge again. I am not happy with how it came out.

Any ideas for mounting the tanks? I'd like to paint or polish them, and don't want to necessarily glass them in how they were.

The Bahner has mounts front and rear. But none in these tanks

Yes. This pic shows the pocket that a tab off the gas tank slides into. It's amazing what a difference it made cleaning all that old carpet glue and fiberglass off.

Hard to tell in the picture, and im trying to understand what you mean by "pocket"

does it have some sort of "mount" or support to the right of the tank in that picture?

My tanks are originally glassed in all the way aroun the bottom. Think an angle iron mount holding it in place

If that makes sense?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The tank has a piece of angle iron welded to it that slides into a fiberglass pocket. Here's a zoomed in pic.

I also spent some time with the buffer and polished most of the rail kit. I did the two angle sections that the engine will sit on.

And one of the two motor mounts. Going to finish this up shortly

Rough sanded with the DA and 120 grit to get all the scratches/ cutting marks off, What I dont have pictures of is the sanding after this, the 220, 320,  400, 600 wet, 800 wet, 1000 wet stages. I cheated and used a palm 1/4 sheet sander. Even for the Wet stages

Motor plates are polished, drilled, and tapped. The only thing left to do as far as the rail kit is concerned is to remake the rear mount (one last time) and then polish it as well.

and anyone thinking about it.... tapping 5/8 pipe is a complete BITCH

Went and picked up the carpet, Decided to go with the Dark Gray. I made a boo-boo and was not paying attention. I bought the regular outdoor carpet that does not have the rubber backing. SO the glue soaked through if we pushed to hard. Ill re-do it later on, but for now it'll work

My pops helping lay the carpet

Speaking of the gas tanks, i went ahead and cleaned all of the old fiberglass/glue off of them. and prepped them to be glassed in again. Im going to glass them in across the bottom, then paint over the glass.

Cleaned all the Glass/Adhesive off with 80 grit on the DA, then moved to 120, 200, 300, 400 and shot them with primer

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0503151348_zpsi9f5srvu.jpg&hash=d97b616616cf91550e38bce9a97b41cfe4d7eaf5) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0503151348_zpsi9f5srvu.jpg.html)

Then shot the top half with Black

These could have come out much better, but i was not to worried about them and chose not to wetsand or prep them for the paint

But while i had black paint and clear mixed up, i went ahead and finished up the bowl. it came out much better

What oil pan did you end up running? Front sump LS3? Are you going to run your coils under the headers or on the valve covers?

I'm running the normal ls3 pan, it's not a front sump, it's a flat sump if that makes sense. It's the ls3 camaro pan

The coils I'm not sure yet..... The coil set I bought are early truck coils. And they were for perimeter bolt valve covers. I found a guy on Facebook that has a set from a 99 Silverado the only year that has my coils but center bolt valve covers.

If we make a deal and I get them from him, then I'll mount them on the valve covers like oem, otherwise probably where the engine mounts would go until I can save up and buy a new set of coils. (36 dollars each)

Feeling a little bit under the weather, but went home last night and got the tanks glassed back into place. I think they came out pretty clean. There are 3 layers of 7.5 ounce fabric, when it started to kick last night i tried to move the tanks around and they felt pretty solid. If they move around at all later on, ill glass in some mounts and make a different moutning system. But im pretty sure this will be plenty.

The half that is raw aluminum (well glassed over aluminum) will be painted gloss black to match the top half. Im undecided if im going to carpet the bottom half of the tanks or not. Probably mock it up and see how it looks.

First layer down

I wouldnt be able to get this boat together without the help from my father. Hes helped without question and i cant thank him enough.

I got off of work yesterday and was feeling pretty shitty so i went over to the gf's house and just went to bed. He texted me and he finished laying the carpet out.

Finished the carpet up last night and turned to tackling the wiring before the interior goes in. Im not a fan of the wiring thats in the boat. Its old, spliced, cut, and just in general bad shape. So im going to re-wire this thing.

Til i get the wiring from ebay. I started mounting the MSD and the fuel pump

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0506152115a_zpse4oyv9cr.jpg&hash=522fa57baa629240feedfddb999e45443e382b1b) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0506152115a_zpse4oyv9cr.jpg.html)

It will be bolted to the transom, jut the fuel pump outweighs the MSD box so it kept falling forward. Also the bolts will be shortened and the pump rubber mounted

Thats not a bad idea, but i need more than 7 wires :-(

just for signal wires
tach
volt
oil pressure
oil temp
water temp
water pressure (just because i have to many holes in the dash)
fuel pressure
MSD Power wire
12 volt power
12 volt ground
bilge wires

and im sure im missing some

If you wanted to go that route, could run 2. I think it's around $1.30 a foot. I know Colton Truck has it.
If you did go that route, but the black, not green. They damn near doible the price for green since it's for ABS on trailers

starter?

Any of the pressure gauges mechanical?
water press?
fuel press?
oil press?

Is MSD going to be on a relay?

I used the 7 wire trailer cord and worked good. (Napa)
I believe 9 wire cord is available, too.

According to the install manual from MSD they dont recommend using a relay. Just a fused 12 volt. The Fuel pump will be on a relay all the guages are electrical

I just ordered 9 different color spools of wiring off of ebay (price couldn't be beat) and a few relays/terminal blocks from McMaster Carr

I want to put the harness in that wire loom that kayotk used in his bahner. BUT that shit is not cheap. I think ill just use normal old conduit.

The gauge sending units will go in the wire harness from the MSD to control the coils, crank and cam sensor. So i will not have the normal terminal block you see at the back of the intake.

The MSD won't need a relay. It uses a signal wire to turn on and off and the power it uses comes directly from the battery on the two 12ga Black and Red wires.

If you want to be legit you gotta do some concentric twisting of the wires.

Kapton tape. It keeps adhesive shrink from grabbing the wires and some guys use it hold harnesses together while they are building them.

The engine i have is techinically an LFA (2010-2012 Hybrid Tahoe, Yukon, etc) being such it had the factory Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management. It is essentially an Aluminum LQ9, but with me putting th e243 heads on it, deleting the VVT and AFM it is now a normal LS2.

The valley cover is an OEM piece for a 4.8 part number 12598832 it blocks off the AFM and has a port on the back for the factory oil pressure switch (i run an adapter for a normal oil psi switch). It also does not have the holes in it for the knock sensor being a 4.8 piece., I paid 35 dollars for it on Ebay and it came with the gasket and bolts

Ahh. I didn't realize your engine had displacement on demand.

I need a valley pan with the PCV built in so I can use pretty valve covers. I am going to build a bracket to mount the coils to the factory engine mount area to keep them hidden a little and keep them away from exhaust heat. I will need the knock sensors...

I dont know if this matters or not. But i will say the research ive done and what ive heard is that the LS engines really dont need to breathe much at all... just an fyi

All this talk of valley covers reminded me... We had a G8 motor come in the other day and I noticed the LS3 valley plate has provisions to block off Active Displacement, has an oil pressure fitting and has a breather tube with baffles.  Here's a link with a pic...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12599296?seid=srese1&gclid=CLr9ifSws8UCFROVfgod85AAfg (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12599296?seid=srese1&gclid=CLr9ifSws8UCFROVfgod85AAfg)

Just make sure you put all 8 o-rings in the cover, or better yet tap the AD oil feeds and install pipe plugs.  Customer had low oil pressure with oil consumption and smoking on hard acceleration.  Sounds like a whipped motor but was actually missing a few of those o-rings.  Oil was squirting into the PCV and filling the intake!  Replaced those o-rings, cleaned the intake and whadayaknow... oil pressure shot up and smoking stopped.

got a lot done this weekend. And i still spent all mothers day not working on the boat   O0  >:D
"When momma aint happy aint nobody happy"

Friday the rest of the parts came in to get the jet together. So i went home and started on it. First part was scrubbing it down with degreaser and getting it as clean as possible. That was annoying to say the least. I think the rear bearing seal was bad on my pump because grease was everywhere.

After it was cleaned i went ahead and installed the wear ring i got from HTP Performance. I went with an Ultimate Wear Ring. I know some people frown upon it but in my case it seemed the best or easiest option. Easy to install and since the plan is to have a pump built next year i figured i would give this a shot. And some people love them some dont (imo its like a ford vs chevy thing)

It went in easily needed a little persuasion but other than that it fit nicely. Once in (and after talking to Duayne at HTP) i set it up with about .025 front clearance and it had about .020 overall side clearance

Got the pump set in the boat. I used a gasket on the suction housing to intake, and silicone on the transom adapter. New Stainless bolts/nuts and washers.

Yesterday i was off from work. Had court for the kiddo. So after court i made some progress on the boat.

Got the bowl drilled and tapped for the cradle from HTP Performance, I also got hardware for the cable connections to the pump.

Obviously im going to need to make a longer ride plate. It is about 1/2" to short  :banghead:

I couldnt stand the way the battery switch looked when i got it, so i tore it apart and painted it

Sat down and made the rest of the plate for the electronics on the right side of the transom (MSD Box, fuel pump, Fuel pump relay, battery cut off switch)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0511151349_zpszuf6x98h.jpg&hash=66444b9ee27938803f3a49b576e9d57d999072a9) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0511151349_zpszuf6x98h.jpg.html)

In case you were wondering, it is all drilled and tapped for the screws holding everything on.

I installed the Rail Kit Rails, the bilge pump (need to get hose then it will be done), Made the fuel lines from the tank to a seperator (will be mounted on the transom above the jet under the gunnel, Polished the aluminum trim pieces that were on the side of the boat. Might make another one for the rear of the boat, Re-Installed the fuel fills, things are starting to come together! Seat brackets were installed and seats put in.

Whats your plan on the head steam tubes? I found some nice adapters on eBay, and after examining the factory cooling system it looks like just plumbing them to exit somewhere on the transom is all that is needed.

Looks good Steve. Way to keep at it, the boat and the thread.

If you got the time, I would say paint the tanks. A uniform look.
I would say polish them but, since they are already half painted...  ???

What are the polished plates on the inside gunnel, above the tanks? Heat shields from the previous blower motor?

Philo, for the steam vents I ordered some 1/8 npt adapters from a company called wegman or something like that, I'll get a link later today.

I'm going to make a simple distribution block out of a 1x1 chunk of aluminum. Then dump them over board.

But I've been really thinking about this and have decided to dump them into the collectors of the headers.

Since my headers will be dry, this will make them look like they are injected and hopefully keep the cops off my back.

The adapters I bought were like 27 for the set of 4

Thanks Dave,
I'm gonna paint them.

Idk what the polished plates were for originally. Maybe heat shields that's a good guess.

I only put them back on because where they were, the Paint Is rubbed off. And of course I had to polish them

Thanks Dennis,

Like I said they rubbed the Paint underneath so they went back on to cover that up. If the boat ever gets repainted I'll shitcan them.

I might make one for the rear of the boat not sure yet

I'd agree with that too... IIRC on a 4th Gen they plumb back into the radiator?  Been a while since I sold mine :)

I do recall that some cars have all 4 steam holes tied together with a skinny "H" looking pipe that sits under the intake (the very early cars IIRC), while others block off the rears and only use the front steam holes.  I don't think my FAST intake cleared the "H" line running under it so I had to change over to the later style stem tubes when I ran it.

Chad,

you are correct. The early engines had the "H" pipe and these are very hard to find and almost non existant. And yes the OEM application plumbed it back into the radiator or coolant recovery bottle

There are a few schools of thought in regards to the steam lines

1. Block all 4 off, in a jet application the water is moving through the block so fast it doesnt matter (not a fan of this)
2. Block off rears and dump 2 over board or into the cooling system somehow
3. Run all 4 overboard.

there are some people that say they don't matter, some say only 2 etc.

There are some reports of the rear cylinder temps being higher than the rest of the engine and this causing the top ring land to crack or break off. Obviously if that happens its catastrophic.

Me, Personally... Im just going the safe route and dumping all 4. Still trying to decide if i want to do a bulkhead and dump them through the transom. Or adding to the collectors like i said earlier. Im leaning towards the collectors since im running dry headers. Might fake the cops out.`

Another idea that i just thought of is to buy a set of these
http://www.ictbillet.com/lsx-remote-mount-water-pump-adapter-plate-3-4-npt-chevy-ls1-ls-camaro-536.html (http://www.ictbillet.com/lsx-remote-mount-water-pump-adapter-plate-3-4-npt-chevy-ls1-ls-camaro-536.html)

Drill and tap the side of it for a 1/8npt fitting and just recycle the water back in the cooling system.

OR even

buy an AN fitting that will fit into the overboard engine block lines and tee it into there...

Or more simply dump the shit straight overboard lol

My coil brackets came in from ICT Billet (same people that made the engine plates i bought earlier). I am thoroughly impressed with these things. One they fit the coils perfectly and all of the holes fit the valve cover as they should. And they were cheap.... 39.99 with free shipping  O0

Of course.... I had to polish them, but it took about 10 minutes with the buffer they are nicely finished.

I hate the coils ontop of the valve covers but this helps make them look a little bit better

Before i polished them

Ill get pictures unfder the dash later on, but when i took this picture the 12v hot and Grounds has already been run to the dash with a fuse block and a ground distribution strip up under the dash. Also the Ignition is wired and there is a Key on hot wire running to the back of the boat, where another distribution point will be.

I may not be doing the "Marine" color coding. But trying to make it make as much sense as possible. Also trying my best to tuck the wiring and hide it. Wiring is one of my pet peeves i hate sloppy wiring.

Where is your alternator going to go? I was thinking of swapping to a Corvette balancer and using one of the "Mini" GM alternators mounted to the front block plate. The truck balancer sticks out like 10 feet.

Im still not 100 percent sure.... Im planning on building a mount to mount it to the rail backwards facing. Then run an AC belt to the crank pulley.

Still dont have the alternator. But ill probably just get an astro van one or something

Made some good progress this weekend.

Saturday i finished the wiring harness. Got the entire boat wired (all except gauge lights). This took most of Saturday afternoon, then on Sunday i decided to move where the battery and batter cut off switch will go.

So unfortunately had to make a few changes to the wiring, but the good thing is that its done. The engine harness is the way it is from MSD, and i just added my sender wires into the harness.

After the wiring was done, and I was able to clean out the bilge. I painted the rest of the fuel tanks, masked off the stringers and set the engine in.

I had originally polished the front engine plates, but after they got scratched a few times. I decided to just give them the same finish i did to the rear and the mounts for the electrical components (120 grit on the DA) Plus its less maintenance later on

Got the engine set in, and more or less lined up. Waiting for a drive line and PTO then can put the engine in permanently.

Without the spacer

And a few more pictures just because! You can see part of the wiring in the pictures. I hope to hide it a little better. Also the engine is not completely hooked up as far as wiring goes. Still working on that

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0517151843a_zpssn9skvl6.jpg&hash=e8a18e0a651e2dab1dfbf8113d59987156732e45) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0517151843a_zpssn9skvl6.jpg.html)

I know the left side header is lower. Im going to heat and bend them both up a little bit for more clearance. Also will do my best to make them match

I'd probably run the spacer. Adding those usually moves the power up in RPM range which you will probably need. I doubt that engine will see much use under 3K.

Well yesterday was just full of bad news... some work shit came up. Figured i would go home and work on the boat, that should relax ya right?!? WRONG!!! Should have just sat in it and made vroom vroom noises and drank beer haha.

My new temp gauge came in so i figured i would try to get it installed. Going with Autometer Ultra Lite gauges in this thing (closest match to the autometer tach in the boat). I'll eventually get all the autometer ultra lite series. But for now just the oil psi, water temp. And ill buy as i go. A full set of gauges are not in the budget.

Open up the temp gauge and theres a piece of styrofoam stuck under the glass....

Right by the R in WATER and in the corner of my eye in the boat. So i emailed the seller (bought it brand new from ebay) and they are sending me a brand new one out today!    O0

So that was the first bad thing to happen lol.

Next i moved onto the fuel system. Most, not all but most of the fittings i needed showed up yesterday. So i opened everything and laid out how the lines will be ran and realized that i do have all of the fittings i need. My plan is -8an from the tanks to the seperator. -8an from the seperator to the pump, -8an from the pump to the regulator, then -6an to the carb.

Well when i was drawing the system up and deciding what fittings i needed i could have sworn i had enough -8 line to do the lines from the separator to the pump, then the pump to the regulator. Yeah..... nope apparently i only have -6 line and thought i had some -8 laying around. But no, its all -6 or the -8 grew legs... Ill go to G&J and pick up some -8 line and -6 fittings.

So no biggie, ill make the regulator to the carb. thats easy enough i have the all the fittings for that and the line.

nope... the damn fittings are -6an fitting for a -4 an hose... Totally my fault i bought them from summit, and just plain wasnt paying attention.  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

then i moved onto the water system. Since my budget on the build dried up a long AN Hose and Fittings for the cooling system are out the window lol. Lucky for me, my dad gets the Goodyear Silicone heater hose from his work. The blue hoses that are used on police cars and ambulances. Really nice stuff.
This stuff:
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.carid.com%2Fimages%2Fgoodyear%2Fair-conditioning-and-heating%2F65042-3.jpg&hash=f8f088777c3fbfe9d7491f9a6b5a3741e94a9fd4)

But the blue does not go with the boat at all and will annoy me to the end. So i had an idea, when i ordered my wiring sleeving from mcmaster-carr i went ahead and ordered some for the silicone heater hose. I really like the way it looks, should protect it and the hose should last a very long time. I put the sleeving over the hose and heat shrunk the ends.

Heres a close up of the line coming off the pump.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0516152211_zpsueq2jjjf.jpg&hash=fe987a8e3f0e0c0fe5ed9266fac04783f9ea0033) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0516152211_zpsueq2jjjf.jpg.html)

No i do not plan on running that valve in the boat. That was just there to help with testing the lines. And i didnt want to misplace it

But im running two dumps (the ones that were on the boat already) and the headers will be dry for the most part. At least for right now. Ill make water lines later on

going to tie these down to the mounts on the intake. But once i run the steam lines i wont have room underneath the intake to run the hoses. So they will look something like this

And the worst part of my night.... Also the stupidest thing i could do  :banghead:   :screwy:  :'(  :-\

After what seemed to be nothing but dead ends with what i was doing. I figured i would run the bilge hose and install the dump for the bilge. That should be easy right?

Nothing i do is ever easy or atleast thats how it seems.

I drilled a 1 inch hole in the side of my boat, in the completely wrong spot..... and would have to physically move the fuel tank for it to be useful. FUCK

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0520150712a_zps8gvnivgy.jpg&hash=c649f1631cced390ad9d29943a8130c869dc3cf4) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0520150712a_zps8gvnivgy.jpg.html)

the paint was already cracked there. So i figured lets put the dump in the middle of the cracked paint. Itll cover a lot of it up....

Yeah...... Probably drank to much beer and should have waited til today to do this, but yeah.... fubared it. At this point, im considering buying some sort of stringer washer and building a "billet" cap for the hole. Or maybe a 90 degree bulkhead fitting and running a second bilge pump (always planned on running two bilges). But thats if i can get a -10 to -12 angle bulkhead to fit in between the tank and the side of the boat.

Otherwise, going to find a way to cap it off and cry

for the left hole, and a straight one for the right hole. Both -12an. Ill get a AN to Hose barb for both of them, and run my bilg pump to them. Until i get the second bilge pump, ill just cap one of them off

Thought about that, but for one, didn't have enough of the sleeve to go that route. and two they would interfere with the belt for the alternator.

The more i look at the picture i dont see why it wont work that way. Except maybe needing longer hoses...

But i know i tried it i just dont remember exactly why it wouldnt work ill try it again

Slowly, just about done sanding, as soon as that's done it will be time to put the right stringers in, went and bought clear kiln dried Douglas fir today, so hopefully within the next few days I will have the stringers in. Then it's just reassembling everything. Still have a few things to buy.

Not much to update other than ended up rebuilding another 750 for it since this one is screwed up somehow. The needle/seats are so far down that i cant even get the nuts on them and the float level is still to high.

It ran okay above, but this other one runs much much better.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA5u5GF7a5U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA5u5GF7a5U)

I was setting the secondary Air/fuel mixture screws. But it was just way to loud between the headers.... Felt like i lost my man card so out came the Pink ear muffs. (Seriously it was painful and disorienting being the collectors are right at my ears and ear level)

One of the things that make putting an LS into well anything is the MSD Controller. Literally all you need is a Cam Sensor and Crank Sensor. Thats it.... There are a few different boxes for different year LS Engines (24x or 58x reluctor wheels) but other than that. It is simply a plug and play deal...

Yes, you have some more wiring to contend with i.e. the coil harnesses, a map sensor harness (If you run one), the cam and crank harnesses. But what is cool is with the box you get all of the features you dont expect. Like a Rev limiter. Fully customizable timing tables, even a 2 step and launch retard (if going in a car). You can go as far as programming the timing based on the Manifold vacuum and what not.

And when i say plug and play... i mean literally that. Hook the box up. Plug in the sensors and hit the key. No distributor to make sure its right, no timing to dick with. My first fire was literally a half rotation and it lit off and idled (high but thats because the carb was set high).

My only gripe with the box is that MSD decided to use a serial cable for the computer connection. WHAT THE HELL MSD ITS 2015! Nothing i had at home has a serial connection. So i bought a USB to serial cable... yeah no dice either Windows 8 wouldnt let me roll over the driver that was already installed for the usb connection...

So i looked around asked some friends and i ended up finding this dinosaur of a desktop at my GF's house. And it has a serial port. So tonight ill be able to raise the Rev Limiter past the 4500 that its set to. And give it my timing curve... if you can call it that. 16@ idle then 36 at 1800 flat the rest of the way...

One question i have for you all is i will be at 11.5:1 compression. I do plan on running 50/50 mix race fuel (probably AV Gas) and 91. Which will be fine. But if for some reason i need to get fuel on the water. I wont have an easy way of retarding timing...

One thing i was thinking of was to hook up the step retard that the msd box has and have it on a switch. So i can drop anywhere from 0 degrees to 15 degrees by the flip of a switch. Is this something you would do?

I plan on running nitrous on this engine in the future. And will use it for that as well. But im thinking if im somewhere and all ican get is pump gas or even worse 87 on the water would pulling say 10 degrees out be a good idea?

With aluminum heads, the awesome combustion chamber designs an LS has, and unlimited cooling you should be able to get away with 11.5 to one and pump gas. An LS3 is 10.7 to one stock and that is designed to loads a low RPM which a jet boat won't really see.

I'd say a retard toggle switch would be a great idea but I'm not sure you will need it. Your cam and testing will determine what will work for ya.

Thanks this seems to be the general consensus... after asking around a lot of people are recommending lower timing in the boat than a car. Like mid to low 20's. They also say i "should" be okay on the 91 as well..

After talking with a few of them, i threw a baseline curve in the thing last night. 16 degrees from 0-1000 rpm, then up to about 23 and then from about 3500-4500 down to about 21 and then back up to a total of 26 by 5k and then flat there on out to the 6800 rpm rev limit.

They recommended dropping timing down where the max torque will come in, obviously im guessing here. But i wanted to be on the safe side.

Lowest this thing will idle is about 850 which is fine with me. And at 850 its very very choopy and crackly. Sounds great. But i might crank it up to about 1k on the water... we will see

So, since Friday ive been fighting a fuel pressure issue. I plumbed the fuel line in -8 from the pickups, to the separator, -8 from the separator to the pump, -8 from the pump to the regulator and then -6 to the rail. Should work out well and be plenty of fuel.

Well i plumbed the entire fuel system. Ran all the wiring for the pump (40A relay). Go to key up for the first time. (i still had not tested out my wiring harness i made... it worked perfectly woohoo!) Well everything seems to work. I have crank, bilge, fuel pump everything. But the fuel pump will not prime the system. So i pressurize a tank and it starts flowing fuel. But wont stay primed. I tried everything i could think of. Finally i figure it must be the shitty chinese pump i bought.

so i dig around in the tool box and find an old ass holley blue dot i have. I mean this thing is ancient, in my first rogers that i started on. I had bought that sleekcraft for parts (for those that remember) Yeah... it came out of that.  It was so old its back when Holley used to paint the entire motor Baby Blue.  It looked like this:
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.britishracecar.com%2FBobGirvin-Allard-GT%2FBobGirvin-Allard-GT-DM.jpg&hash=024ef90f5ce049501314bc3e828b096eaad4984c)

but i hook it up, and low and behold it works... starts puking fuel almost instantly. So i hook it up to the fuel rail and the gauge pegs, and the carb becomes a gasoline fountain. Well the shitty billet chinese regulator is crap also....

So i find another regulator i have this time a summit brand one. And get the pressure turned down. But the carb (the red one) is still a fountain. So i dick with it and manage to get the fuel level low enough to keep from spewing everywhere. But the needles are so far in that i cant even get the nut to grab any threads. at this point i decided to just rebuild the other 750 i have and run it.

But now the fuel pressure is all over the place, but below 7psi (max where i want it) The pump just cant stay fed. With my one gauge (a liquid filled gauge) it would frequently sit at 0 but the engine would run perfectly fine and not sputter or anything. I narrowed it down to being a bad gauge since two others were reading about 3psi-7psi. At this point i was like must be the pump its old cant be working correctly. So i figured i would buy a rebuild kit and try that before buying a new holley blue pump. (this will arrive today)

Well fast forward to last night all of the above was this last weekend.

I kept thinking about it all day and thought maybe the tank needs to be vented. So when i got home i started messing with it. Took the cap off, no improvement. Put the pump lower in the boat, no improvement. Had an idea, since im running the fuel rail "upside down" and "backwards" i had to drill and tap it for my fuel pressure gauge. Maybe the threads arent deep enough and thats why the gauge is reading oddly. So i put another gauge in the original psi gauge hole... Nope still the same, this time for both gauges.

This entire time ive been running it off of the passenger or right side tank. So i hook it up to the left or driver side tank and bam 5.5 psi and rock solid. Running or not. FYI the summit regulators are noisy as hell.

Now the weird part.... I figure thats fine, so i hook my separator (thank you h20nut21bahner btw) back up and all of the fuel lines so i can start cleaning everything up and tidying the wires/lines up as well. Key on and have low pressure about 2psi until the separator filled up and then back at 5.5psi running off of the left side tank. I switch over to the right side tank and no change in pressure. Shut the key off let the pressure bleed off key up and rock solid 5.5 psi. Let it run for about 35 minutes... Still a rock solid 5.5psi on the right tank. Maybe a piece of debris was stuck? Maybe an air bubble that popped in the separator? I dont know but ill keep an eye on it.

So after all of that, i got the tuning done (see the above post) I started on cleaning up the wiring, hoses, and getting ready for everything to go back together.

Another thing MSD did that drives me up the damn wall, is they put the harness in Plastic Conduit which is fine... but they didnt cover all of the harness. and thats annoying as hell. So last night i went and electrical taped where you could see the bare wires. Along with the wires i added for the temp and oil psi senders.

I still need to get some wire hangers or whatever they are called for the water hoses and get them buttoned down. But its cleaning up nicely.

Im pretty sure this pump is fine so im going to run it. The rebuild kit will be here today, so ill clean it out and put it back together. I went ahead and cleaned up the motor on the pump since i hated the baby blue that was on there. And painted it with some of that Metalcast paint in Blue. I like the way it came out

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FIMG_20150526_211237_zpsmnpdyewx.jpg&hash=720386ff166fd90e914ec36ad12f39d57a9c3d21) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150526_211237_zpsmnpdyewx.jpg.html)

Today, the rebuild kit for both the pump and a holley regulator i have will be here and i can get that stuff squared away. Then start (hopefully) permanent installation of the pump, lines, and regulator. Then move onto the wiring at the front of the motor. Finish up my steam lines (the line for that will be here today also) and get the bungs welded in the headers.

I got a 1310 drive line from 88carerra it needs to be rebuilt so ill start on that. Its missing the straps for one of the ujoints, and need to replace the ujoints.

I also need to heat and bend the headers up a little bit. But i don't have a torch. My dads work does, so worst case scenario ill pull the headers off (thank god remflex gaskets are reusable) and take them down there. One side only need to bend a little bit, the other side more but should be relatively easy.

then i can re-paint them and mount them up.

then all i need to get this bitch wet will be a PTO and bolts!

But I've been really thinking about this and have decided to dump them into the collectors of the headers.
Since my headers will be dry, this will make them look like they are injected and hopefully keep the cops off my back.

Do NOT i repeat DO NOT do that above... Ask me how i know...

I welded the 1/8" bungs into the headers and made my -4 AN lines for the steam lines.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0530151920_zps3ni6q1uo.jpg&hash=7c09195c441fae21519c2b2a934e822dfcd8774e) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0530151920_zps3ni6q1uo.jpg.html)

Looked great, everything worked fine so i fired the boat up. Let it idle a few seconds then turned the water on. It was working exactly how i thought it would. Nice and steamy. WELL and this is 100% my fault. Apparently when you have a Cam the size of god it doubles as a shop vac. The engine ingested a LOT of water. It hydrolocked.

So i pulled all 8 plugs, pulled the headers off, and cranked it over, it was like Niagra Falls coming out of this thing. So much water it was sickening.

Did one oil change and then fired it up. After 2 oil changes the oil looked like this

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0530151727_zps0noj60lq.jpg&hash=372eff9df532eeb2c67e603b43e86956435347fd) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0530151727_zps0noj60lq.jpg.html)

So i did 2 more oil/filter changes and the oil cleaned up a bit but never came out good. the engine has perfect oil pressure and no noticable knocking But its so damn loud i dont know if id be able to hear it. After sitting around yesterday i decided to pull the engine and pull the pan.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0531152136_zpsobr0ejpe.jpg&hash=c5ee5fa30bbd9b4041dcd0958d4de8e71ea81bd5) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0531152136_zpsobr0ejpe.jpg.html)

There is still a lot of water in this thing. But no metal or copper. And thats a very good thing.

The bearings look a little bit torn up. The mains look the same way they did when i had it apart last time. (i re-used the main bearings last time) But the rods are kind of beat

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0531152136a_zpsha64dqlv.jpg&hash=8b12287051485652df1e242a63560bfd23ce0bcd) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0531152136a_zpsha64dqlv.jpg.html)

so if the rest of the bearings look like these. Im going to replace the Rod bearings and its goign back together. After i manage to get all of the water out as well

Man this shit sucks...and its 100 percent my fault. I should have known better :'(

You have that much reversion that it pulled water from that close to the end the exhaust?  That doesn't seem right.

On the other hand, i found my fuel problem. I knew something was wrong with the right side tank, so i cut it out Saturday morning. Blade tools are awesome for this

Got the tank out and started looking at it, and found the pickup tube was cracked.

Rode the bike out to G&J and they made me a brand new one in Stainless for 17.00

Got the tank glassed back in, painted again... and then cleaned the boat up. Washed it for the first time since ive owned it haha

So what is you plan on exhaust? Add mufflers?

To be honest I have no idea what the actual laws are on jet boat exhaust. No one has ever batted an eye around here on dry exhaust boats I know of but one of my buddies said he was busted for not having a baffle on his Dana?

Also, in the photo with the drain pan, was you engine lifted up or does it sit that tall in the boat?

Gonna run the headers dry. If i get a ticket i get a ticket. Later on ill add water injection to the primaries like the bassets and run them on a valve. Manually controlled.

But for now run them completely dry.

No the engine is lifted up on the hoist. I have about 1/2 inch clearance without lifting it

Jet boat exhaust... or ANY exhaust on a boat- Pre 1993 (I think) must conform to SAE J-1970, and 1994 and later, SAE J 2005... this goes by the year of the engine, not year of the boat. Yes, This is on the Colorado River, at Bullhead/Laughlin

I've been checked 3 times in the last 7 to 8 years, twice by Nevada Wildlife, Once by Bullhead P.D., and had the Ranger @ Davis Camp walk to the transom with a night stick.(Before he let us in.) They only looked for baffles, (Mine are visible from the rear) or the 'night stick' test, night stick hits a baffle, your good to go.

A typical Big Block Chevy/Ford/Olds, with logs and snails, is at or beyond the limit, But they never bat an eye...
And there ares signs at Bullhead Community park launch, Rotary park launch, Riverside Casino launch, Davis Camp, Lazy Harry's, Etc.
If it looks like you comply, You'll probably be all right, Drive like an Idiot, they will slam you with the book.

Condensed  version:

Steve- Water injected headers have a weep hole that allows the water to leak out, (rather than into the cyl. head ) with your 'steam lines' hooked up, weep holes (and a valve) MIGHT save you.

Yes... I know ill be illegal.... Ill worry about it when i get a ticket. But i just want this thing to get wet and move under its own power.

My only problem with the "steam lines" Is they are necessary for the LS engine, without them, the rear cylinders can run hotter than the rest... Heres a pic of an aftermarket solution for EFI installations

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi90.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk265%2FDavid343%2FIMG_7200.jpg%3Ft%3D1338506685&hash=94338020eaa2592dfe070a8714555a57a592c54f)

So, a valve might have saved me if i only opened it at higher RPM. But i dont think i can just turn these off and have them be okay when at low rpm/idle. And since a boat spends a decent amount of time at idle (long no wake zones) i think ill be better off tee'ing from the cooling line to the header inhjection when i do that. And just running the steam vent through the transom un-obstructed. So it free flows as it needs to

I'd just run the steam lines to a hole in the transom. You don't really need flow from them, just a way for air to escape. I'm actually surprised you got that much water out of 1/4 inch line.

Does your MSD have a RPM switch built in? Maybe hook a parker valve to it a RPM switch to turn the water on at 1500 rpm or what ever RPM reversion is no longer an issue?

Yeah I think it does. Idk for sure

I'm going to run it straight through and worry about water injection later on.

If I get hassled at Elsinore for noise I think I'm going to mount a set of dynomax bullets on it and say eff you I have mufflers

You know, since you are running those dry you may want to weld in some O2 bungs. Putting a wideband on that to tune sure would make it easier...

Yesterday my new Rod bearings came in so i went ahead and replaced them. My dad took the oil pan to his work to clean it out real good and put it in the jet wash. But he got side tracked and forgot to bring it home.

So we got the rod bearings replaced. Mains re installed and everything torqued back down and cleaned out.

tonight we will set the pan back on and set the engine back in the boat.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0602152137c_zpsvegq7byn.jpg&hash=5e2e92b17240db33dedda4438a6d47025374fc8c) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0602152137c_zpsvegq7byn.jpg.html)

The plan was to get the engine back in last night, Fired up and do another oil change.. but that obviously didnt happen.

So i moved onto the list of things i have left to do. Which wasnt much.

I moved to Bilge pump, because where it was water would be about 1/4 inch up the flywheel when the bilge would stop sucking water. So i moved and epoxied it lower in the boat.

Put the packing rings in the pump.

Added some more silicone to the transom adapter. When i was testing the bilge pump i noticed i had a small leak from the corner of the Transom adapter. SO i went ahead and added another coat of silicone to that as well as the bowl/transom adapter seal

Scrubbed the seats down used bleach/water mix and magic erasers. Major difference. Also followed up with some of the meguiars vinyl seat care stuff. They are so much softer

Wired up my Step retard to a switch. Im not 100 percent sure where i want to mount it, and if i want to drill a hole in the dash or not. So i ziptied it to the steering rack for right now. Its out of the way and you cant see it

At this point all i think i have left is
PTO (ordered should be here today or tomorrow)
Drill the rails for the rear motor mounts
Eventually fab an alternator mount
Washers for ride plate spacers
Gate valve
Beer!

Anything else you guys suggest i check/do before this thing gets wet? I think ive crossed all the bases but i could be missing something.

If everything goes right, and as planned. She will be on the water this weekend

You know, I would put a few hours on it before changing oil again. When it gets up to temp it will boil the moisture in the engine out. Seems like a lot of $$$ in oil.

I'd add one of these while it's out. I think most late model GM drain plugs are 12M x 1.75

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fteaguecustommarine.com%2Fmedia%2Fcatalog%2Fproduct%2Fcache%2F1%2Fimage%2F9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95%2Fo%2Fi%2Foil_drain_kit_1.jpg&hash=5ddc5c727be0a0550e193c14c68fbdba378259aa)

I am thinking really hard about putting a LS4 in my Omega as a cheap replacement for the stupid 396. I can get those engines with low miles for $400-$500 since they have the small 60 degree pattern on them. I bet I'd break even after selling all the BBC stuff off. LS Swap EVERYTHING!

I have one of those hoses on the bahner. But i really dont see a simple way of running it in this thing. Plus to change the filter ill have to pull the motor anyway. It takes abotu 10 minutes to get it up high enough to change everything.

I was thinking to run it at home for about an hour or so and get the oil hot. Do this once or twice. Then change the oil. but i might leave it in there and jsut change it after the first lake trip

Yea, they are stupid cheap. All Aluminum with LS6 heads.

Positives:
Cheap
Balancer is super short for more room.
They usually only have 100K on them.
Pan has tons of baffles and is low profile
All Aluminum
Cheap

Negatives:
I would have to make a rear plate for the 60 degree pattern
Have to figure out a starter (no provision on block and flexplate is small)
Only 303hp stock? Seems weak for a 5.3 with LS6 heads. A better cam and free slowing intake/exhaust + vavle springs + higher rpms would probably bring this up a little.
Might have to swap the timing chain cover to work with a MSD 6LS (It's 180 out on the LS4)

I had an 08 GXP for awhile. It ran very well. I had a full exhaust on the car (STUPID LOUD) but before warranty was up i got my dads work to replace the trans. While it was apart we my dad and i changed the gear ratio and also built the trans to shift nicer (shift kit, blocked accumulators etc)  Because of the gear ratio change i had to have it dyno tuned.

ended up at 284hp and 320 ftlbs at the tires (if i remember right i know 320 is right, hp might have been 283, 285 somewhere there). Car was a lot of fun. Front tires didnt last very long at all. I will say..  The car handled like it was on Rails. It had a "G meter" in it from the factory. Going up to Oak Glen i pulled .91g's in the corners once. Crazy. I wish i still had the car

Yes he does, I used to be a brake and front end tech for GM as well. But now i sit at a desk all day.

Hes the Trans/Heavy Line/Foreman for a local dealer here.

No i did not get the core there, i bought it from someone on Performanceboats

It's probably good they don't. I'd LS swap everything including my forklift.

thats odd... his work has 1 core right now. But it is very rare that they have an LS engine core or are replacing one.

Lots of Gen 1 blocks though

Got the oil pan on and the engine buttoned back up. Also got it set in the boat.

This little gem came in (1 day  from glenwood marine) Are they gold colored because they are fuckin expensive for a fancy spacer?

got the engine lined up where it goes, with the driveshaft and pto attached. I left about 1/4 inch of play in the driveshaft before it bottoms out.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0603152158_zpsn1smrjfq.jpg&hash=2fc3aaae2f428f3bfd3440a7fbdc01bf549d85ce) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0603152158_zpsn1smrjfq.jpg.html)

Also got the steam lines ran for good this time. I drilled/tapped the transom adapter and added a 1/4" npt nipple to it on the inside of the boat. Later on ill convert this to AN line but this will do fine for right now
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F0603152224_zpsgm5nbfnm.jpg&hash=1e2c3aaed71b604245ec6f6c97a3cfe51cbcd3ad) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0603152224_zpsgm5nbfnm.jpg.html)

So now, the boat is ready to go. The drive line isnt hooked up currently (so i can run it on the trailer) but it is there and just needs its 4 bolts.
All thats left is to
run the PCV line
Get a filter for the other valve cover
Grease the wheel bearings
Put all the tires on the trailer
ziptie some of the hoses/wires out of the way. Just to make sure they are secured
Find a way to hold the scoop down to the carb. I have some ideas ill try them tonight
Clean/vacuum the boat
Wash my truck

And i think thats it. Shooting to hit Elsinore early Saturday morning

Im @ 91db at idle (about 20 feet from the boat) and 118 @ 2500rpm... fuckers loud lol

Shawn (sevans01) works about a half mile from my house. He texted me, that thing is loud i can hear it over here...

You have that much reversion that it pulled water from that close to the end the exhaust?  That doesn't seem right.
Philo i took this picture for you. This is how much water comes out of the steam lines. And they are tee'd into one. I would asume two seperate ones would have more water flowing out, since its not restricted.

Well..... Boat floats......

Got to Elsinore right at 8am. Dunked it checked for leaks and all was good.

Tied it to the dock and parked the truck.

Idled around for a while getting familiar with the jet and the way it drives.

Went for a lap around the lake and cruised at about 3k rpm. My dad wasn't there with his boat yet.

I did two laps and everything was perfect. Temp was about 140, perfect oil pressure. Boat is extremely loud but all was good. Came around the east side and went to get into it and ripped the gas pedal out. I didn't use long enough screws.

This thing was responsive as hell. And fast. My dad's was there so headed back to LA Laguna to meet up with him.
Title: Re: 1970 Weiman

Then we headed back out to the cove. Cruising down the lake as we turned at the South end, he hammered his boat and said he was doing 60. Which is about all that boat does with that prop and not a real long stretch. I laid into mine and just walked away from. I was spinning the BC impeller 5800-6000.

But the boat was or seemed like it was porpoising. So I let out (keep in mind at this point I'm holding the gas pedal in place with my left foot while driving with my right)

So we get to the cove and pull some screw's out of seats and get the gas pedal screwed back down.

I let it sit for about 30 minutes. Pulled a couple spark plugs and they looked perfect.

My uncle was with me and wanted to go for a ride. So my uncle and I climbed into the boat and head out. Let it idle and warm up. Around 130-140. And get to the end of the no wake zone. Water was Glass and I hammered it.

Boat launched harder than anything I've ever driven. Was swinging about 5800-6000 rpm. Oil pressure was right at 80. And the porpoising was gone. I think it was my foot not being able to hold the pedal still that was causing it.

Probably running about 70-75mph if I had to guess. And engine dies... Just cuts off. Go to crank and it's locked up tighter than a drum.

Then I see it, steam/smoke coming from the side of the block. Walk over to it and there about a 3 inch hole through the block.

Threw a rod. I then proceeded to get intoxicated.

Pulled the engine from the boat this morning. I hate air tools with a hangover BTW.

I'll never know for sure. But my best guess is the rod bearing spun and this caused the rod to let go. Engine was so loud you didn't hear anything.

I've "blown" up my fair share of engines before but never have I grenaded something so bad. Nor have I seen it in Person.

Regardless. A part failed idk what it was but it managed to take out both numbers 3 and 4. Both pistons are cracked. The rest look okay and all the bearings (besides 3 and 4) look fine.

What did I learn ? Don't build a race engine with stock internals.
I also learned that the ls engine is very capable inside a jet boat. Right out of the box I was swinging the BC to 6k or so... That's with a JC bowl and no diverter. And a more or less stock pump.

Yes I will fix this, chances are i will be down this year... But when it goes back together, it will be studded, 100% forged, and this will never happen again.

Now im going back to bed and getting rid of this hangover lol

Oh. And FUCK officer Titus of lake Elsinore PD.

I respect cops, I have many friends that are cops. But this guy... This guy is an asshole.

We dropped a friend of ours off at west marina, there was no traffic so we headed over to LA Laguna where we launched at.
My dad was driving the Bahner.

No big deal, well there were some douchebags on lake lice hauling ass in the no wake zone.

He pulls them over in assuming cites them.

Well dad and I switch so I can drive the boat on the trailer and I drop him off at the dock.

As I start my approach to the trailer officer dickface pulls me over.

Asked me if I've been driving the boat. I say no just to put it on the trailer.

Officer dick face "right, so you haven't been driving"

Me "no sir my dad was, he just backed the trailer in"

Officer dickface "right, well I saw you drive the boat against traffic to here"

Me "you didn't see me diving the boat it was my father"

Officer dickface " uh huh guess we just have to wait for him to swim out here so I can cite him "

Me "really? Just give me the fuckin ticket"

Officer dickface "okay that's fine it's 65.00"

Me "okay"

He proceeds to start on the ticket, then decides he wants to see all the safety shit.

Officer dickface "I need to see at least two life jackets"

So I take the back seat off and there are about 8 of them in there. So I point at them

Officer dickface "no you need to take two of them out"

Me "okay there you go"

Officer dickface "where is your for extinguisher"

So I crawl under the bow and get it and hold it up

Officer dickface "I need to look at it"

So I crawl my fat ass out and give it to him

Officer dickface "okay, class 3 throwable?"

Me "okay I'll get it, anything else you want to see while I'm under here?"

Officer dickface "no"

So I crawl under and get the throwable

Show it to him

Officer dickface "day use pass?"

Me "I thought you didn't want to see anything else"

Officer dickface " are you arguing with me? Have you been drinking? "

Me "yes sir"

Officer dickface "how much"

Me "more than you"

Officer dickface "do you consent to a field sobriety test"

Me "no"

Officer dickface "okay here's your citation have a nice day"

A great fuckin cap to my great fuckin day lol

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'd lean more towards something was assembled wrong... Stock LS lower ends are actually very stout for what they are. Tons of people are putting 10+lbs of boost on 100k stock lower ends with zero problems.

Either way it definitely sucks. Sorry man.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying it's highly unlikely.

Everything was checked multiple times.

But mistakes happen. Reflecting on it, it was pretty tight going together. Meaning the clearances were on the lower end of spec.

Doing research, it should have been a lot looser.

So theres that, also we can't forget I hydro locked it, that could have been a contributing factor.

And just sitting here thinking... Maybe just maybe it was to radical for a marine application on a stock lower end.

What I mean by that is, it was 11.5:1, big cam etc. Maybe the combo works in a car because they don't live at 6k rpm, maybe it was just simply to much for the load and environment a jet boat demand as and creates. To live and last on stock internals.

Yes they are great engines and yes there are people out there making big numbers on them. But nobody said how long it really lasts.

I don't care what the stall is our the gearing it does not live at 6000 rpm for more than a split second

I'll never know the truth. Going to set the next one up looser and with better components.

My heads, cam and valve train are all in good shape so at least it's only a lower end

Cleaning the boats out last night and found my Go Pro. With everything that happened and my inebriated state i completely forgot i had about 30 minutes worth of footage of the boat running before it let go. I cut it down to about 2 minutes because most of it was boring. Heres the link if youre curious

Looks like it'll be back on the water soon. A guy at my dad's work had a line on a free 5.3. So we went and picked it up. It was running when it came out of the truck it was in just tired as they put it.

Went and picked it up saturday morning. First thing i noticed was it was dirty. But hell for free it will work til i can find another 6.0 and build a 408 like i want to.

Got it home and did a leak down test. About 30% so it needs rings. Thats fine was planning rings and bearings and run it.

Started tearing it down and wow this thing is NASTY. i have never seen this much sludge in my life. Quite literally unbelivable. This thing had sludge caked on abotu 1/2" thick everywhere.

However, pulled it apart and im still amazed. The rods and mains look brand new. Cylinders still have crosshatch marks in them. Going to put rings in it, and cam bearings. Im assuming the cam bearings are shot from the sludge and the oil not making it past the mains very well. Measured the Rod/Main cleareances right abotu .00275-.003. A little loose but its what most are recommending to run in high abuse applications with an LS.

Went at it with the pressure washer and she got cleaned up. The rotating assembly is at my dads work sitting in the jet wash for the next hour or two.

the plan at this point in time is to put my cam/heads on this. And run it, wont have the power of the 6.0 but should run pretty well, regardless im hoping itll be turn key and i can enjoy it for awhile

Yeah idk what they ran. But i do know it had one of those little quick turn drain valve thingies, and im guessing it got clogged up with sludge and they never ever changed the oil after that. Probably thought it was burning 6 quarts everytime. Or just a little came out..

One of these

When I was at my dads shop, we saw it all the time , motors that had a mile of sludge in them !! And we would show the customer , and there always like what caused that??? First thing out of my dads mouth you used pennzoil for oil huh. Yes was the anwser!! Got it changed at a quick lube place and that is all they use.

No worries! 706 heads are plentiful. This head may be savable with a double insert. Dumbasses drilled it out to like 12mm instead of buying the correct heli coil and bolt.

I didn't see any mention of it, did you bother with a MAP sensor? I can't really think of any reason it would be needed on a boat for timing. But... my boat did have vacuum advance hooked up when I got it. Ease of starting?

Well, the piston rings that were supposed to be here Friday didnt show up until Saturday. And for some frickin reason my mail didn't get there til about 430 Saturday afternoon.

Dad and i got all the rings filed, and the rest of the motor built Saturday night. Broke it in, in the driveway at about 10:30 at night (sorry neighbors).

Woke up about 530 Sunday morning. Changed the oil, hooked up my Oil temp gauge, fixed the fuel line for the carb. And hit elsinore at about 10am.

The 5.3 is down on power in comparison to the 6.0. But it still pushes my little boat pretty nicely. Doesnt plane as quickly. But i think thats carb related. I didnt touch the carb from how i had it on the 6.0 and it was extremely fat. Wouldnt fire up nicely when it was warm. (took awhile to crank). I need to downjet the primaries a couple sizes, and i need to put the stock Primary Accelerator Pump discharge nozzle in. (.028 to the .031 i have in it)

I tried not to beat on it to much but it seems to run well. The water was a little bit rough, and the boat came out of the water a couple of times. (thank god for a rev limiter. Hits it pretty damn quick) But it seemed to pull past 5k somewhere in the 53-5500 range. I think it might do a little more once i get the timing and carb dialed in.

But regardless its back on the water. Survived most of the day, til the battery got to low and we decided it was time to get it home. (havent installed the alternator yet)

I also need to figure out my water injection. I tee'd the valve line (valve is by my seat) off of the left side dump. But no matter the RPM or even on the water hose i had no water coming out. I think there isnt enough restriction to push the water into the valve line.

Question, Can i only run one dump? (the engine/oil temp was nice and low) and just run the second dump the the valve for the injection? Or would that cause one side of the motor to get hotter than the other?

I need to say thank you to Darrel (h20nut21bahner), Wes (carrera202 i think), Greg (icecreamman), Jake, Chris (philofab), Dennis (capogniracing), GT Jets, Sean (sevans01), Hans (89 Carribean) and anyone else i forgot to mention. Without this site, and the people here. This would not be done and would never of happened.

And most of all a HUGE thank you to my Father. Hes not on the site but without him this would of never of been finished this quickly. I blew my budget on the last motor, and he stepped in and really helped me out both financially, physically and more importantly emotionally on this. I was 100% down and bummed about the engine letting go the first time. If it wasnt for his good spirits. There is no way in hell i would have even finished the boat.

You should run the two engine dumps together with a T or Y into a single line, then T or Y from that for injection water. This way it will equalize pressure and flow through the engine.

Did you GPS it at all? I'm curious what a 5.3 will pull speed wise. I'm thinking 60-65 MPH.

I did not really GPS it, didnt want to beat on the new engine to hard yet.

But at 3000 RPM it is running right about 32mph according to GPS. I didnt realize that when my phone locks, it shuts off the GPS so i dont know what it runs past that. It felt strong though im guessing at the least 60 but based on what ive seen other 5.3's report and the fact i should be making a bit more power im hoping to see a solid 70. Another member here had a 16ft heavy schiada with a stock 5.3 and a jet it ran 72 if i remember correctly.

As far as the cooling goes, here is a very crude paint drawing of what i have going on. I run a line from the pump to a gate valve, the gate valve to a tee under the motor. then into the two cooling ports on the motor, then out the thermostat ports (two of them) then straight to the dumps. I added a tee in line to the driver side dump overboard.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv643%2Fsteves86ta%2Frouting_zpspqkztbrk.png&hash=3f7d6088c55f1b572116dbb7f052d39e79940667) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/routing_zpspqkztbrk.png.html)

Are you saying to tee the thermostat ports back to one, then tee off of that?
Title: 1970 Weiman
Post by: philofab on June 22, 2015, 09:39:52 AM
Yea, I doubt you need two dumps for the coolant. One 1/2 dump should be enough. If it creates too much pressure in the engine or can't cool well enough go to a single 5/8 or 3/4 dump. I'd put a temp pressure gauge on it to see what pressure you are getting in the engine. I like to see 10-15 psi at full throttle. As with anything else there are lots of ways to accomplish the same thing and YMMV.

On my little Omega I will be pulling the water from the steam ports with a small adjustable gate valve to regulate flow to supply the headers. The block returns will use a Y to combine and exit the boat with a single 1/2 dump.

I thought about pulling from the steam ports. But i dont think itll be enough volume to fill a 5/8 hose to a valve to the front.

So, Tee the two dumps to one, then tee them to one dump and one to the header valve?

Yup. That should fix your pressure issue to the header valve and also keep it from creating a pressure difference in the engine.

Well, I think all of the big projects are done with this thing. Moving forward the plan is just get the trailer cleaned up, painted new bunks etc. and then of course, when funds allow build a 408

This weekend i broke down and put mufflers on it. For a few reasons. 1. Hopefully take some of the sharpness away. 2. so i can tell cops i have mufflers. 3. To extend the collectors past the transom so when i inject water it doesnt soak the inside of the back of the boat.

I only tack welded them in three spots, didnt feel like pulling the headers off

then yesterday i decided to pull the wheels and check the bearings out since we are planning to tow the boats to Phoenix for the 4th. Good thing I did because they were pretty much shot

I also got the alternator installed and wired up. Works great

Oops. K5 = 5 Rib

I just call them that because thats how the part number works on the belt.

Most are K6, as far as I know all of the GM serpentine setups use 6 rib unless it's a diesel which use 8 rib.

Oh. Idk. Pulled the pulley off of an old alternator I had from a 1986 trans am.

well I took her out to Canyon Lake In Arizona for the fourth. Visited some friends.

Boat ran great all weekend. Was turn key reliable and a shit ton of fun.

I learned my cam is entirely to big for this little 5.3 (figured it was but its what i had) and i can only spin to 5000 rpm. The cam starts making power around 4500, but i hit that wall and the 5.3 just doesnt make enough power to swing any higher.

Im starting to look into cam options.

She pulled 65 on GPS with me, another grown man, 3 ice chests, some other shit for the day and two full tanks of fuel.

Im happy with that, i REALLY need a diverter/split bowl/droop. But for a more or less stock JC im more than impressed.

But for now, im just going to enjoy it for the summer. Maybe this winter ill look into another engine build. But i think with some fine tuning on the combo, i have 70. And thats not bad for a 325ci motor

There was a Car Craft years ago where they compared the stock LS1 cam vs the stock 5.3 and then an aftermarket cam. The LS1 did ok, but the aftermarket one they tested made almost 100 hp. A cam with similar specs would probably be just right for a jet boat. I'll see if I can find it.

I have a bunch of stock LS3 cams but I think they use a different trigger / cam gear.

Chris,

i think i found that article. Im pretty sure my cam is good for ATLEAST 100hp over stock. But at 6500 RPM or so....

The article i found is here

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/1307-ls-cam-test-comparison/ (http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/1307-ls-cam-test-comparison/)

based on that article, im considering something like the Crane Cam Trio 210 or 224

A little less power with a better curve will go a long way. Something that starts winding up at 3k or so.

What impeller do you have? B?

I've got a BC. And thats what im thinking too.

Called a cam guy here in Glendora that ive used a few times. Told him what i have for an engine, and what im running right now for a cam. He said right away that it was way wrong and i should gain with a smaller cam.

He has a few grinds he recommends. And he said the same thingas you. all of his will start making power around the 2500-3k mark with my 5.3.

Now i need to find a core. He said if i can find a 5.7 LS1 core that would be best and we can do anything on it.

I have a brand new aluminum B impeller here if you want to give it a try and see how it does vs your BC cut after you get the cam swapped.

LS1 cores are plentiful on LS1tech.com.
That is where I pick up most of my parts. Some of the engine guys in your area may have some too, maybe Danzio or Redline.

I might give that a shot if you dont mind. But i think it might end up being to big and i wont get the RPM i need out of it. Though it would lower my cruising rpm (from the 3k it is now) I might hit you up on that

I called a few and they have some but they want around 100-150. The cam grinder wants 75 for a core. So if i dont find one ill use on of his

Never got around to changing out my cam. Its still sitting in the box. Ill get around to it sooner or later.

But i think all the bugs are worked out now. I have a slight porpoise at the top end that i need to iron out other wise i think the nightmare is over.

Took it out to Elsinore Sunday for a couple hours early. Boat ran very strong. Previously i had some fuel psi issues, but i bought an Aeromotive regulator to go with the new pump i bought, and everything seemed under control.

fuel pressure is stable at 6.5 pounds and the boat runs very clean. It did stall on me after hitting the rev limiter once and coming out of the water. I think it might have ingested some water from the scoop being backwards. My reverse bucket seems to throw a little bit of water over the transom.

but regardless with me, my GF, two full tanks, and a small ice chest I ran 69 on GPS at elsinore. Im pretty happy with that. I did the math and thats about 600 pounds of weight onboard.

Not bad at all for a little 5.3

Heres a picture my mom got of me doing a fly by in needles the weekend of the Avi, airs out pretty nicely.

Well this happened today. The trailer used to be some sort of double decker trailer. I hated the winch post on the front so I cut it off. I also decided to cut off the tongue and install a swing away kit from pacific trailer. .. while I was there I pulled fenders and they are on their way too.

Just going to clean the trailer up a bit, new lights,  new paint,  etc.

It's going into permanent storage in November in parker
