OK, NOT where i was going, but NOT an HEI fan. Never had one work right, EVER........ worked and worked this one on Pickle......to no avail after about a hundo and a half.  It's gone, history, garbage ttruck came this morning, new Mallory equipment in its place. Dialed right in yesterday, we'll see how it works out, but I'm betting I can break the 3000-5000 "hiccups" the HEI gave me constantly  and not worry about the misfires and occasional  start-up backfires i experienced (History has had these same afflictions with me and an HEI)

I'd LOVE for someone to teach me how to work those freaking things. But from a purely nuetral standpoint, I cannot see possibly how they stand up to whats out there!

Ray

You had one with a bad top bushing and it was causing the magnetic pick up ring to bounce....Very common...New upper bushing and change out the pick up and lock out the dashpot and you would have a distributor that is second to few...

Where an MSD really shines in in loaded acceleration, something most of our jet boats will never see.... ;)  MSD stands for multiple Spark Discharge, meaning it uses the CD box to store power and it hits the coil with multiple hits during a single spark signal.....Works good for keeping the spark plug lit
"lit" for a longer period of time............. :sly: On a dyno sheet, it will show up as acceleration rate, the top HP/Torque numbers will be similar or same....You actually have to perform an acceleration rate test separately from everything else, not very common....

Ray hei's work great!!! Your misfortune is probably something you are doing wrong, no offense because you seem to have your head on straight "well this is a compliment because we all know you are crazy and your kids probably keep you in check" back to the subject hei's seem to relate mostly to the gm family! my dad has a DUI hei in his 70 ss chevelle, and let me tell you this puppy wakes up and comes alive! another friend races asa speed trucks, and their tech involves just that gotta have a gm hei dizzy...i will never knock an hei at all it's simple and it just plainly works...now would i try to transform an hei to a mopar or ford? hell no! they never seem to work at all! in a gm it just works!

Oh I know, Nordie, lol. But this was ON a GM! Yes I own one. Maybe just needed a rebuild. Back in my day though, we could never get them to work right on the street either, but those were also vacuum advance units.

I love the concept! particularly in boats, no external coil! Kindof a mini Mag! I've just ALWAYS had problems getting them, and keeping them, to run right............. :screwy:

Hence this................................

And the garbage truck........

Good job on the restoration.  I think that those valve covers and air scoop are too shiney for your boat.  Send them to me so you won't be tempted to install them.

Looking forward to see the video when you are running the rivers and lakes.

got busy today... valve covers are just sitting on, as well as my exhaust manifolds...  waiting for SS allen bolts to show up.

i think it looks a lot "meaner" with the scoop.  waiting for a bracket to come along with a nut drilled for a safety wire in case it comes loose.  going to run it backwards though... i heard forward is loud.

The air scoop being forward is not that loud. Looks cool and the sound of all that air being sucked in at WOT is neat.

do you have a flame-arrestor inside of that grille or is it open?  do you have a cover to go over it when you tow?  id hate for a rock or dirt to be blown in when towing it.

my scoop is on backwards to avoid water splashing into the scoop  it's a likely downfall for a low freeboard boat like mine, plus no flame arrestor!

Flame arrestor yes, cover no. What's gonna jump into it when its facing backwards. Plus the screen is there

is a flame arrestor required even if facing backwards?  i was probably just going to toss my K&N filter that i had on there before inside of the scoop.  my biggest worry is water splashing and getting sucked in somehow, both backwards and forwards.

best buy is running a special during fathers day, buy one get one free.  so i bought the only one they had and they're gonna ship me the other free one.  going to build a bulkhead in the bow, fiberglass it all sealed and stick 2 of these up in the bow and then hopefully i can find 2 pairs of 6x9's, one set in the back in boxes that i can move or point towards the beach, and one set under the bow somehow.

it wont be the loudest, but at least ill have something to listen to at the lake.

A flame arrestor is required either way.  I built my hatch with the scoop facing back.  I have 2-10 subs mounted to my floor right in front of my bulk head facing towards front with ports to the side.  Gets all air space and hits very well.

Not in Nevada.
Here you can have...
An attachment to each carburetor or to the engine air intake that disperses flames caused by engine backfire to the atmosphere outside the vessel and does not endanger the vessels occupants.

Although your correct(Run scoop out the back , dont need flame arrestors), I have heard of Water Cops not understanding this and are under the impression you MUST run FA's at ALL times. Terry?
