Sounds like your packings are leaking excessively.

Don't run it on the trailer, it's not good for the pump.  If you need to start it, don't rev it and don't let it run for more than a few seconds.

Flusher, that's what I've heard but I've read online with a berk jet I can run for about 30 seconds with water hooked up and be ok. I'm really just trying to get it to crank at the moment.

Chris, I have a test light but I leave my tools at work unless I'm planning on doing work at home. Originally I thought just the battery was dead due to the previous owner not "winterizing" the battery. Drained to 30%. I didn't plan on having To trace down why I'm not getting power to turn the motor over, but all in all running through this will help me in the future so all advice given to me helps tremendously in gaining more knowledge of my boat.

Much appreciated ... Cheers

30 seconds is fine and you don't need water hooked up.

The packings need to actually leak (one drop every ten seconds) in order to seal and lubricate.  Spraying water into the pump will not get water between the rope seals and the shaft and will overheat.  I also don't believe that running water back through the water fitting and onto the ground is doing much to lubricate the impeller and wear ring.

All of those parts are expensive and not easy to replace.  Just saying...

Flusher, So if I hook up my hose adapter to keep the motor cool should I still not run longer than 30 seconds?

And when calling a mechanic he told me the same about the packings, however, the previous owner had said he was taking in a lot of water last season where he had to pull the boat out of water after 30 min of running at Elsinore.

If you're mechanically inclined and just not familiar with boats, I'd suggest spending some time just poking around and looking at all the different things that could give you problems while out for the day.  While you're doing this, take notes of sizes of wrenches and types of fasteners you would need if a repair was necessary.  Build up a small tool kit of old or cheep wrenches, wire cutter/crimpers, terminals, test light, screw drivers, cresent wrench, jumper wire, zip ties and whatever else you think you might need.

If you're lucky you won't have to use the tools, but you could be the guy that saves someone else on the water.

Crewchief22, I picked up a small tool kit to keep on the boat. Nothing fancy but I figured it would do the job if need be. I'll be poking around to see where I'm losing power, maybe a possible short somewhere. As far as mechanically inclined, I work as a systems integrator for a petrochemical company hand bending 1/8",1/4", 1/2" 316 stainless steel tubing for gas instrumentation. Work a little with electrical as well. With that being said I can read wiring schematics but I can't seem to find any online. I'd really like to get the motor to crank over this weekend.

GT, I'm poking around to see if maybe there's a loose ground not making full contact or any other wiring issues before I completely change the ignition switch. One ground located on the solenoid wasn't making full contact with the ferrule(in picture)

What in the hell is that regulator doing there?

You need someone to help go through the electrical system in that thing. I would recommend NOT putting it in the water until such has happened.

That's what I'm counting on, hauling it to a friends house who's mechanic is going to be there working on his boat. Gonna give me a run down on what's going on with it. He's Mobile so I can work on it at home and not have to lug it around everywhere.
