California law is (From page 37 of cali boating 2009 handbook) - in lue of a Coast Guard approved backfire flame arrestor you must have:

"A flame-tight metallic carburetor air intake attachment, located or positioned so backfire flames would be dispersed to the atmosphere outside the vessel. This device must be acceptable to the Coast Guard and be such that the flames will not endanger the vessel, persons on board, or nearby vessels and structures."

Hope that helps chaz...Boat looks F'in great, killer job!

It will stay facing back then until I get some arrestors.  Now I need to figure out why I lost 1000 RPM's and a LOT of speed :banghead:

I am sure most/all of the problem is that I am running at 5100ft now.  It pops like a flag blowing in high wind at all RPM's and backfires a bit on rapid deceleration.  Looses even more power with increased popping with mild chop in the water :screwy:  I checked the float levels and they were all full.

I was told I will have to decrease my jet size, and suggestions on where to start?

I think some of the RPM's may be from the new pump, but this thing just dogs or stalls now when I floor it.  I thought maybe the carbs need cleaning like something came up the lines or it just got nasty from sitting over 6 months.  I did notice that the rear carb did not seem to be spraying as much fuel with then engine off and just pumping the gas.

The plugs are quite brown now too...

Any Ideas?

I know when we use our boats at Lake Tahoe, there is a 20% loss in useable HP, we normally drop two jet sizes in the BBC with an 850 DP, and increase the timing to 38 from 36 * total, still won't pull past 4500 RPM and at sea level will run to 5200 RPM, so I think your battle will be won, but you'll lose the war  :)

The popping seems bizarre, never had one pop at altitude, sounds like a lean pop which makes little to no sense. :screwy:

Maybe lack of ignition strength? coil failing?, loose wire or two??

Just random shots in the dark, my little jet will only do 65 MPH in Tahoe, almost 80 at sea level so losses I would consider normal, but not to your extreme.....

I took it out today and got the same thing...

So I decided to check the compression while I was sitting on the beach. All cylinders w/in 2lbs of each other @ 92lbs on one compression stroke. No problems there.

#7 and #8 plugs looked "oily" or perhaps sooty.

Pulled the scoop and filters and looked like hell in the carbs Black soot on EVERYTHING. Sprayed some carb cleaner all in it.

pushed the throttle and noticed that the rear carb was not spraying
Cleaned it out, had some gasket material blocking it.

Fired it up and remarkably better throttle response(of course) but still popping

Checked the cap for wear, nada, it has maybe 3 hours on it.

Decided to rotate the wires 1 place so I could get more advance than before, (tunnel ram hits the cap) wouldn't start. Went to put the wires back and noticed that #7 and #8 were reversed

I must have checked the firing order 3 or 4 times since this started and each time missed that. WTF I feel stupid.

Got in started and idled perfectly. Mashed the gas and 5250 RPM's and a hole shot I never dreamt of having; only had a worn out impeller before.

It did stumble a bit after maybe 30 mins of lake touring with my family just before it went on the trailer so I may have some junk in filters, but I think problems are solved for now.

Yes the pump made an incredible difference on the hole shot.  I have nothing to really compare it to but my old worn out one though (haven't sat shotgun in many other jets, none where they mashed it from a stop)  I will have to try and get a top speed now maybe next weekend.  I should have the new jets in by then.  Funny thing is that everyone said they loose RPM's at altitude and I have exactly the same with a tight pump and 5007 ft altitude today.  I did lose the stuffer on the new bowl however, maybe that has something to do with it.

Stuffer really should not make any difference in RPM (not that way anyways), if anything, I think your making good use of the water you're pumping...You may have had some mechanical drag going on in the old coffee grinder  ;D

I used to run that pump at 5200 RPM and in the light boat would be just a tick under 85 MPH but it wanted to step out the transom and was a handfull to drive (major bow steer), now has a full droop, a Place Diverter, a stainless A, plate loader and a stuffer, should be mo betta. we will see next month  ;)

The problem I am going to have is I will have a loss of about 100 HP (put the old motor back in it) The retired race motor was a little over the top.
