What did I do?

Well I got up this morning with the idea that I was going to replace the intake manifold gasket to stop the oil leak... As I started pulling off water lines and marking and removing wires... I started thinking about the floor that I was sure was at least a little rotten as the jet-o-vator handle pulled out of the floor a couple trips ago and I had to move it back about 3 inches for it to hold. So I glanced over at it and saw plants growing from the hole where it used to be. OK season is getting colder so lets pull the carpet back and see just how bad it is.

Yeah it needed to come out.

About 300 lbs of very stinky water saturated foam and utterly rotten wood later

I removed everything without electricity as even the glass was delaminating and the front seats were pulled out literally with just a light tug to rip a small strip of glass that was still attached.

In the last photo you can see 1/2 tubes glassed into the floor. Are these original? They seem to be blocking water from exiting from the back.

i did all this to to my boat in the last few saturdays with the help of kevin felken over at canyon boats in lodi ca. not as bad as your probaly thinking to do yourself. will post pix this week of new floor and transom
before i forget if you need new seats we make fiberglass drag boat seats if you need new ones

I am going to try and grind out all the old stuff this week. I need to get that part done soon as I am already itching like mad

I need to redo the area under the bow and figure out how to install the fuel tanks properly also. If anyone knows a good link for instructions on this let me know

I'm not sure if I did it properly but here's how I installed my gas tanks. I din't have any problems with it after it was done. Two pices of fiberglass mat, about 12" X 12" drenched in resin, a ~10" pice of wood corner moulding shoved in between the two pieces of mat, I did that twice per tank. Took me less time to glass the tanks in than it did for my two fingers to type this.

In this same link you'll see where I replaced my floor as well. That probably took me 4 hours or so. My boat didn't have those tubes glassed in to the floor either.

Well I am officially offering my services as a stand in for a cactus. Wow this is itchy work, however, I am almost ready to cut the new floor. Any tips on where to buy the glass materials in San Diego? Also anyone know a good way to get the old carpet glue off?

There is a place in La Mesa called DMC you can look them up , I dont have there number but they sell every thickness of mattong off a roll by the foot and puts home depot's prices to shame. And they also sell all types of resin and any other materials you can possibly think of. The guy in there will be more than happy to walk you through any procedures and answer any questions you might have about glassing or carbon fibering.

If its the hard dried on glue, Ive been using my grinder with 60 grit sand paper. Works great, and yes it is itchy stuff.

The glue is 1/2 hard and 1/2 kinda soft, I tried a scraper on the soft stuff, but that is too labor intensive. The grinder seems to heat it up and make it sticky then sling it everywhere, bu that was working better than scraping. I heard brake cleaner, so I'm off to buy that.

Seriously, the itchy fiberglass sh!t rarely bothers me and when it does it is hardly even noticeable to me. I could make a mint... wash with cold water, the colder the better.

Carefull what you put on your fiberglass!!

Brake cleaner

I would rather have it labor intensive then have it turn expensive.

I used the scraper first then the grinder. be carefull

Yeah, I got the brake cleaner idea off the other site... 99cent store had some but... That idea sucked. I'll just grind it off. Home depot to pick up a few 24 grit disks.

I did notice it coming off after sitting in the sun for a while, but the grinder disks have been purchased. I also must replace the wood that attaches the deck to the instrument panel. It looks like the previous owner did some kind of terrible job and broke them off then wood screwed a new piece to the broken area. I give the job a D- and thats just because it lasted the summer without cracking the deck. This boat is going to solid and done right when I'm done with it.

Let me just say removing carpet glue SUCKS! I am getting close to having this thing prepped for new glass and wood

It is amazing how someone can try and glass in a gas tank by applying the glass to a floor 1/4" deep in carpet glue. Well at least it will be done correctly this time.
