Chevy 6.0 in a 3/4 Ton

My 97 extra cab won't fit the kid seat in the back, so in in the market for a crew cab. Found a smokin deal on a 2002 silverado 2500 6L 2wd crew with the 4L80 and 4:11 gears. I've read some horror stories about mileage. My truck , with the iron headed 5.7 vortec/4L60E gets 12 around town and I can do 18-19mpg running 80 out to the river.... How bad are the the 6.0L LS engines on mileage really?

This may be of no help to you but...

My work truck is a 2008 6.0l 3/4 ton Express van that weighs over 10,000 lbs, it routinely gets 13mpg average and really hauls the mail. I don't know how different these years are.

I average about 14 on my 3/4 ton 6.0 it's a 04 with same gearing I can tow and have about a tad above 1/4 tank when I get to Blythe and tab below going to Parker and I tow from Monrovia. I can't complain it works out to 315/330 miles to the 25/26 gal tank it's comfy ass hell and I just cracked 160, on mine wife keeps telling me to get a new but can't bring myself to sell her.

I'm honestly blown away by the MPG my shoebox gets on the highway...made it from long beach to havasu on 17 gallons...I'm not too hurt if I get a bit less, but reading about people getting 10-12 highway and worse towing.

The wife's 4runner is geared wrong, drinks 23 gallons each way to BR and back and feels clausrophobic after driving the GM....gotta find a crew

I probably get 12/13 towing my 21' open bow... But ur right nothing like having enough room and being comfy I have a crew cab cause of the two kids there is plenty of room to sit 6 people is I needed to.

I have a 6.0 in my work fleet. It gets low to mid teens for mpg. It has right around 180-190k miles never any issues and still has plenty of power to haul what we need.

I have had 3 trucks in the last 6 years with the 6.0. An 02, 04,and now an 07. All 2500 Chevys single cab with a service body and ladder rack loaded with ladders. Like gt said they will and do get up and go. Even though my trucks all were heavily loaded with stuff and the giant air dam on top Ill get about 8-12 on the street and heading to Palm Springs at 75 ill get maybe 15-18 until you throw wind into the equation. On a 32 gallon tank ill get about 400-450 miles out of it. And that's from full to past empty, sometimes ill put 34 gallons into it and its only a "32 gallon" tank. Wired right

If it makes anyone feel better I bought a Honda Ridgeline with a v-6, I traded in my Jeep Commander with a Hemi due to fuel mileage was crap. Ridgeline is a nice truck but my AVERAGE fuel economy not towing is 16.6 all the time.

ah.....um.......unk. The idea is interesting and it is a very nice catruck. Front wheel drive in normal mode and I thought how freaking stupid, then god damn sales asks me ever put snow or weight in the back of your truck to get traction, I'm like yea who doesnt. Then it dawns on me ok FWD aint to bad. It does have 4x4 mode. It tows 5000 lbs so its good to pull my dingy. I'll go check on frame I pretty sure it is full frame.

my buddy was going to buy one when they first came out . but he did some checkin into them and i guess he was told theres no way to lift them so he passed.

You can lift them I checked into it, 2" they put a space between strut and mount.

This is why I went diesel, 22-24 hwy empty, 17-18 on a heavy azz day cruiser (~3800 lbs), 12-14 towing 12,000 lb. 5th wheel
Seems without getting a diesel, there isnt much choice- GM 6.0, hemi 5.7 or the 6.2 ford all 12 mpg or less (WTF???)

I'll keep my 7.3's

I have a '04 Chevy 2500 crewcab 4x4 6.0, it kills me running around town/stop and go 8 mpg's, maybe 11-13 pulling the boat, open freeway 14. i know 4x4 uses more but i didn't buy it for the mileage. if your're worried about mpg's and want to get the most than go diesel(more torque too).

btw it was my daily driver that's way i went gas, the wife got a new commuter car last year and now my daily driver is her old '03 tahoe - avg 15-17 during a weeks driving to work and errands. i switch weekly between the two trucks - after a week a driving the soccer mom suv i have to get back into my truck!!

My sister has an '06, 5.7 hemi- old truck now, still 10 around town, 13-14 on the hwy, that truck "claimed" 20 hwy, new, yeah right

the major prob with diesel, is the cost of the truck! of and lets not forget repair cost! all stick with gas! my 86 1 ton chevy dually gets about 13 on the freeway towing! thats good enough for me.

My buddy just bought a fully loaded dodge ram 1500 with that motor and he has never seen more then 15 on freeway and we used his truck to tow the boat to meet at the bluewater he averaged 10

a bad ass truck and has power new 6spd trans but fuck that ill stick to my 05 chevy 2500hd 6.0 she is a great truck.

Diesel set up correctly is the way to go, a little effort into making some of your own biodiesel helps even more. Cost of ownership is less than gas in the long term. There are exceptions ofcourse. Still would prefer a diesel in a truck and gas in anything else.

My buddy's 2004 2500 4x2 crew cab with the 6.0 gets 14-16 hwy unloaded, and less on the streets. He also has the 4.10 gears.

be careful on the bio diesel! if you make to much at your home youll have to claim your property a hazmat site!!!! they just dont tell you that!
