New shop toy

I got a new shop toy.

The victim at the half way mark. Took about 5 minutes of blasting and about 10 minutes of waiting for the air compressor to "kepp up".

Several months back I got a bench grinder (never got a chance to mount it on a bench yet). I'm going to put a polishing wheel on it and see how much crap I can screw up.

J/K I'll repost some pictures as the little project continues. I thought maybe someone out there was curious how well this "home style" stuff works.

nice what did you get your checks, how much was that and where did you get it at, how big is the compressor that feeds that. thanks h2o

Is that sand or beads?
I blasted some parts w my neighbor's bead blaster; it's the way to go; I messed up though, he got rid of a sand blaster when he got the new bead blaster and I missed out on it (not that I'd have anywhere to put it).

Still haven't receieved the checks. I bought it right after I was injured before I knew I was going to have to go without cash for a while.

I got it at Harbor Freight. It was supposed to be $119.99 but there was an incorrect tag on it that read $79.99 so I got it for $79.99. It came with several diffenet tip sizes that I haven't played with those yet. I assume the bigger the hole in the tip the harder the air compressor would have to work. My air compressor is also Harbor Freight stuff, 21 gallon, unknown HP, and definately a "weak link" but it will work for now. It's regulated at 115 psi and the sand blaster states a 100 psi max. 115 seems to be working just fine.

I'm using sand right now. It's sand that is sold at Home Depot for sand blasting houses and concrete

it's about $3 a bag (cheap). I also have a sand blaster that I bought at Home Depot but there is no cabinet to it.

But seriously, a glass bead cabinet's a great score! very nice HotRod...
so when you get to use that with a buffer wheel on the bench grinder, no aluminum in the shop is safe

I've got a complete Hardin Marine 455 I need to re-polish. This aluminum stringer mount battery mount is just my test piece.

I finished sand blasting the top. All in all it took me about a half hour, most of it spent waiting for my compressor. From about 90 psi and up it kicks butt but once the psi gets below about 90 psi the going gets slow. My removeable ankle cast is full of sand because it turns out that the cabinet has a few leaks. Chinese quality/you get what you pay for. Nothing a little bit of TLC and silicone won't take care of. There are pits from corosion in parts of the top so it will be interesting to see how much "work" is required to polish it.

I finished sand blasting the battery tray/mount. Now I am waiting for some polish and some wheels to show up at ny door.

I sealed the thing with glue today, moved the sand drain hole from the bottom side to the bottom, and tack welded the suction tube to the bottom of the pit so I wouldn't have to put as much sand in it.

I'll post up pics once the polish and wheels arrive. All in all it took me about an hour to sand blast everything, not counting the down time of waiting for the compressor to catch up with the sand blaster.

Oddly, the only place where there is any pitting is on the top, the only spot on it where I'm going to polish it.

This is going to end up underneath my '32 pickup.

Here's the new bench grinder, (damaged packaging, returned stock blow-out sale, 3 1/2 HP, 3450 RPM, 3.5 amp). I think I paid $16 or $18 for it. I'm also going to experiment a bit with putting a buffing wheel on a ? air die grinder, air drill, electric drill, etc...

so I don't have to hold up the logs and snails for polishing.

Any suggestion's? Anyone? I'm going to try and (re)polish an entire 455's Hardin Marine parts. The battery mount is really just for experimentation.

The last pic shows the grinder with the Cotton wheel already on the bench grinder... for easier access you might want to remove the guard!
Makes it easier to get things at the wheel, now put some paste on it and try it out!

The battery tray is a smooth cast piece that's never been polished.
The pic below is using white or green compounds with no sanding. Very less than desirable results.

The next buffing project is a project that I am sure a lot of the people on this board have. A previously polished part that has become very dull over the years. This one is a water pump block off plate for the 455 Olds (which is for sale by the way).

It appears that with polishing it's all about the prepwork. The more the prep work done the less time it takes on the buffing wheel itself. It'll be interesting to see how long it will take me to buff out this water pump block off plate.

In the previous pics each "step" was about a minute long on the buffing wheel. The sanding that I did on that battery tray was with 320 grit and "hurried".

5 minutes into the project.

I'm going to finish it and then move on to fixing up some sort of portable buffer for the heavier stuff like logs with snails.
