While reading this makes me feel blessed I don't have to do as much work but I got intake at JG pump with the droop and an inducer for 850 and then installation with some other work to the hull was like another 900

Quick story.
Way back when, I was young, broke, working hard and the racing bug bit me for the fourth time.
Me and two friends wanted to get involved in the world of white water marathon racing. Piece of cake right?
We had a good friend that owned Challenger Marine in Oregon. He offered to sell us his previous year race tunnel for a great price. I built a pump and a small block Chevy (cubic inch limit) and we were a team. Well sort of.
The pump I built had pretty much all the best parts of the day. Keep in mind it was 1991.
For a thrown together pile a parts, we actually did fairly well. We weren't the fastest boat by a long shot, but we didn't break. Through attrition, we finished in the top three.
The following year, we sucked up a rock the size of a tennis ball at speed while testing. It blew a hole large enough to get my hand in in the bowl.
I had a spare, but very stock pump in my truck. Burning some midnight oil, calling in some favors and a little luck, we had a boat again. You have to keep in mind that I borrowed $200 from my dad for gas money.
We started the race and the boat actually worked a little better than before. We ended up getting to the fourth leg when we crashed out, our first DNF because of damage I didn't catch from the day before.
The point?
Sometimes you can build the holy grail of pumps, install every whiz bang part there is and a stock pump will work just as well, maybe even better.
Make sure to speak with someone in the know before throwing good money at bad.
I like the above approach of one step at a time. It will show improvements and give an idea of what works and what don't, all while being reversible.
What hull are you dealing with?
Do you know of one that has a set back pump? Does it work?
What does the hull weigh?
What do you plan to do with it?
Do you expect it to be able to cruise at 35mph?
How many seats?
Where does the engine make its horsepower?
What has been done to the hull?
Where are you installing the engine?
There are dozens more questions that help paint the picture. You get the idea.
By the way, that small block spun an aluminum Berkeley BC impeller at nearly 6k. That engine is sitting on my garage floor. I can't bring myself to part with it.
Have fun, keep your expectations in check and research what you want to do, before you do it.
