Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Headers under a sundeck
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:08:28 AM »
Is anyone running headers under a sundeck?   Are there any reasonably priced water cooled headers
on the market?   I'm running long bolt logs right now.   It did have stock center riser manifolds but I had to change them out because they hit the tall valve covers.
What are you running?

These heads require CJ headers per their spec sheet.   Oh by the way chebby boys we are talking Big Block Ford here...

Does anyone know for SURE,  will the long bolt logs cover the exhaust ports?   I'm hoping someone is using this combination so I don't have to pull a log and compare it to a gasket port.

It's cold outside, thank you in advance!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 stroker for a winter project.
« on: January 01, 2011, 09:13:50 AM »
We are going to try our hand at a stroker build this winter.   This question is pointed
at the guys that have experiance in that department.
I'm after about 600 HP by 5500 RPM's

I have edelbrock 95 cc heads and would like to stay at 10:1 compression.

1.  What brand kits do you recommend or should it be alacart?
I want to stay with forged pistons and H beam rods.  What do you think about a cast
versus forged crank staying in the 5500 rpm zone?

2. What cam to use with the set up?

3. What stroke does a jet boat like?   What CID?

I posted this on the 460 forum too.   We are ready to have the block machine work done now but are waiting for all the right info.   What bore etc.

Any help you experianced guys can throw my way will be greatly appreciated.

Dave

We are starting to think of this winters project and have settled on a stroker build.
What are you guys running and what do you recommend?

Gotta go 600 HP.  ::)

What cubes?
Bore
Stroke
Rod length
Pistons?  compression height??
What deck height?

5500 rpm limit, pump gas,

Some of what I have on hand is a victor, rpm air gap, and stealth intakes to pick from in the garage
850 holley
edelbrock 95 cc heads
Full MSD marine ignition
MSD roller rockers and pushrods.
stud girdle

Kit or seperates?

Already balanced or not??

I need a recipe  ;D

Thanks in advance.

Outboards / 1996 Johnson 150 fast strike
« on: August 20, 2010, 03:31:37 AM »
This is my brothers bass boat engine.   He had a guy put in a new impeller.  It hasn't pumped water since    He works at a local marine shop but I'm starting to wonder if he doesn't just wash boats.

My brother and I took it apart and found the O ring melted in the pump housing.   Got a pump kit today.  Is there something that should go over the water line going to the head or does it just slip inside the pump housing as the lower unit is bolted up?

We have a shop man. but it's clear as mud.   There is a rubber sleave that goes inside the little housing cover on top of the pump.   Is that all there is?

I can't find much of anything reasonable in the line of 460 exhaust.   I need headers that are water
jacketed for an enclosed engine compartment.

Surely someone makes a reasonably priced high flow exhaust that fits the bill.

What are you guys running for high flow manifolds?   They don't have to flow like
a funny car but better than long bolt logs.

No not the over the transom surf board type.  I'd love it but the wife would shoot me if I told her the sun deck was now an exhaust port  ::)

Anyone have any used Hi Flow for sale?

I added a picture of the original engine so you could see the room available.   I think I could modify for
width but not  height.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / One wire marine alternator
« on: June 10, 2010, 02:21:54 PM »
My motorola finially bit the dust after 33 years and one rebuild  :sly:

Any way to the question,  what do you guys think of the one wire alterators?
What brand are you using and where did you get them?  Any brands
to avoid??

I'm waiting on Tom to reply back so I just thought I'd try to
gather more info in the mean time.

I'd like to go with 100 amps ball park.

Any info would be appreciated, thank you!

Jet Pumps / Loader effect on engine rpms
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:25:59 AM »
I was asked today if a loader could cause engine rpms to be lower?   I don't see how
but you guys are the experts so I told him I would post the question.

He changed cams to a supposedly better cam and lost 200 rpms.   It's a 460 berkeley 12je A impeller.

The only other thing he did was put on the loader.  I vote cam.

Opinions?  Tom??

Engines / Engine Parts For Sale / Edelbrock victor 460 like new
« on: June 01, 2010, 11:26:09 AM »
I'll sell it for $250 PLUS shipping.  The ports and insides are untouched.
It's cleaned up and ready to go.   If it doesn't go FAST I'm going to Ebay it.
 :)

I'm just curious which intake you guys with built but not nuts 460 engines are using.  I tried the
Victor but it's to flat on the bottom for my 23' jet.  It was great at 4000 rpms though.

I ran the Edelbrock RPM air gap last summer and it did well.

I just put on a Weiand Stealth to try that two days ago but haven't had a chance to
try it out yet.

So this is an unofficial survey of which intake you are using and with wich carb. I'm using an 850 Holley
Thank you!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Weiand stealth on a 460
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:15:23 AM »
I'm running a 466, probe flat tops, edelbrock 95 cc heads, 850 holley, comp cams xm278 cam.
I had a victor on but am replacing that today with the stealth.   The carb right now has
77 main jets and 80's in the rear.

I'm just wondering what the people running this intake wound up with with jets.
I'd like to be in the ball park when we take it out.   What power valves?  Mine are 3.5's now.

4 hole spacer or open?   I noticed this intake doesn't have the cut between plunums like the rpm air
gap.

Thank you  ;D

Jet Pumps / Place diverter trim gauge
« on: May 17, 2010, 06:21:38 PM »
Did anyone put on a trim gauge?    I was just wondering if anyone came up
with a trim gauge sender for the place diverter.   12JE Berk.

I saw the expensive one but I'm wondering if anyone came up with an
alternative.

I'm in desperation mode.... I tried the potato, magic erasers, simple green, wax cleaners, soft scrub.
I really need help  :banghead:

Interior / Getting a stain off the upholstery..
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:39:36 PM »
I always put old floor mats on the ski deck of my boat then put on 2x4's etc to support the cover
during the pa winters.
I pulled the cover and there is a stain in the form of one of the floor mats!
It looks like rust but there must have been a chemical reaction or god knows what.
It was NOT wet under there and rubber doesn't rust.  I've been doing it this way since 1977 and this is
the first time anything like this has happend.   I'll never use a tan floor mat again!
Does anyone know of anything to remove it or am I doomed to have it redone.

Will the fuel bowl vents pop out to remove the choke plate?
Are they just pressed in or are they in to stay pressed in?

It's snowing like   outside... 18 to 24 inches of snow to land between tonight and Saturday

I guess there's no hurry   ::)

Jet Pumps / New question on impeller charts
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:31:32 AM »
Ok so the chart tells me what HP, what RPM's but it doesn't say anything I could see
about the flow out the jet?

I have a 12JE with an A impeller turning 5200 RPM's

If I put on my AA impeller and it turns the RPM's at the rated HP what will that do to flow?
How would that calculate to Speed with everything else being the same?  Meaning same boat
just change the impeller.

Will the boat have a higher top end or lower?   ???

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Keith Black forged pistons 460
« on: September 22, 2009, 01:51:10 PM »
Has anyone ever tried the keith black kb855 forged flat tops?

Running 5000 rpms I just don't see the need for $800 pistons.

Opinions??

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / What flat top piston is the one of choice?
« on: September 18, 2009, 01:45:40 PM »
We're going to build up our other spare engine 1974 460.   I have H beam rods so I'll
need free floater pistons.    I want flat tops to keep compression in check.

Which one's do you guys like?  remember, free floaters.

21
So I'm leaving the Edelbrock heads alone.   I have another engine on the stand (short block)
that will be finished off this winter.  What heads?

I have an 850 Holley
Edelbrock Victor and RPM intakes
Comp cams XT, marine 288
msd marine dist.
long bolt manifolds right now
this one has flat top pistons

What do you think.  I would have asked this question on the other post but it was
getting loooog.

Thank you!

22
Would someone with head porting experiance please let me know what you think of the picture.
I heard the Edelbrock heads make more HP if you don't remove the material from the bottom of the head port. Note the black area where the exhaust logs are larger than the head port.

This is in a boat, rpms run to 5200. Should I port match them over the winter or do you guys think that would be a mistake?

It's a 460 with long bolt logs

Thank you in advance.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Exhaust manifold question
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:42:07 PM »
Ok, summer is winding down here in PA.  My thoughts are moving toward upgrading the exhaust
on my CV 23 during the off season.

Does anyone know how the upward style manifolds compare to the long bolt log manifolds flow wise?  I can't use the extreme headers without rebuilding the back of the boat.

Here's a picture of my boat engine in the original configuration to give you an idea what space I have to work with.  I can do some mods for more room but I don't want the sun deck messed up.  That would bring on the wrath of my wife,  and that ain't gonna happen.

I need something water cooled and compact.  I'm considering GM style with adapters.

What I don't want to do is spend $$$$$ on new manifolds that won't flow any better than the long bolt logs I have now.

Would it do any good to cut off the rear of the riser to go with the larger exit hose and tips with the long bolts?

Do you know where I could find info from anyone that has done dyno tests with different brand Ex. manifolds?

I've been kicking this idea around and now that the engine is done its time to help it exhale.

Thank you all in advance, any input will be greatly appreciated.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 intake and carb combinations
« on: August 10, 2009, 05:35:14 PM »
what are you guys running on your 460's?  Not the tunnel ram stuff just single 4 and intake....
I'm trying to get an idea of a jetting and power valve starting point for different intakes and  carbs.
We may all be able to use it..

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / MSD 83506 magnetic pickup to msd 6AL
« on: August 05, 2009, 11:31:38 AM »
I picked up the distributor today but naturally no paper work  :-\
Any how the info I did dig up says to use the Violet and Green wires to the 6AL.  (6AL paper work)

The distributor hook up I saw was right to the coil and never mentions using the 6AL at all....

I figure that's because the marine box is more expensive  :)

Has anyone hooked one of these dist. up to a 6AL??

If not I guess I'm going with the Violet and Green.

Next question is which wire is - and wich is + on the dist.  There are 3 wires Black Ground, red and
orange.

The dist was only used for an hour.  I questioned that but the gear doesn't even have a shiny spot yet.
He said the guy was breaking in his new motor, changed the oil and the old filter gasket stuck.

It blew his motor when it ran out of oil.

I hope you guys can help out, I hate to guess at wires....
