day 2 hour 6 progress:
floor is completely out. probably a good 300 pounds of wet rotten wood. i dunno why they did like 3 layers of mat and cloth on the top, but nothing underneath.
gauges, junky wiring, throttle/shifter, and steering cable are out and trashed.

yup, 2 buckets and a bench across the back. this time ill be thinking ahead for cupholders, speakers, and little cubbies to hold things. im probably going to glass in a little ski locker or something in the middle for more storage as well.

End of day 2:
Took her down to the self car wash and power washed the crap out of the hull. Its all sparkly clean now.

this week ill prep the floor for new glass, clean all the loose edges from the old floor and then sand the areas with some 80 grit and then grab a couple sheets of 3/4" ply for the new floor.
still think I wont make summer? :screwy:

That yellow looks awesome!!

Grab yourself a real sharp gasket scraper and get under the edge of the glass around the perimeter of where the wood was and peel the fiberglass loose from the surrounding area, it will save you a whole bunch of grinding in preparation for the new floor.
Looks like a fairly sound project.

Honestly I'm not sure what to even ask for it. I'll be plucking some of the things I need from it for my new boat (fuel lines, gauges, steering) and I dont have a trailer for it. Also I'm very aware that panther pumps are not super desirable... I'd really only like to get out of it what I'm in it for the upholstery so that I can get the upholstery done in my new one and pass it onto someone else looking for a great start. As with most things I sell I'm not looking to make a billion dollars from them, I'd rather see it go to a good home and be of use to someone. I could possibly get my old single axle trailer back, but I'd have to figure out wtf to do with the avenger hull thats on it...

haha. im just glad you're taking the time to do it yourself. thats the only reason i make threads like these. i see questions about floors, stringers, etc all the time. if i can rip it out in 1 day and glass it back in the next, anyone can!

late tonight recap:
countersunk all of the holes in the top of the boat for windshields, bimini hardware, etc and put a dab of epoxy resin and some filler to plug up the holes. wetsanded all of the dirt out of the gel and tomorrow ill put a dab of white gelcoat into each dimple. once that cures ill knock em down flat and wetsand em smooth. no more holes in the boat!

need a mph gauge and a pick up tube now. gonna head to the depot tonight and pick up a few sheets of plywood for the floor, transom, and some gas tank 90* valves.

Test seat made out of foam board. So far its comfy. Foam should take up ~3" inside. I made the backs 17" tall, now I just gotta trim and angle the sides how I want em...

nothing much to report today. ive been extremely busy lately. managed to cut out the seat bottoms and cushion. tomorrow ill cut the sides and start glueing it all together. then hopefully they get coated in resin and ill start on the rear bench seat and boxes for em all.

front buckets built. just gotta trim down the sides once the resin and glass cures. one side kicked already and im surprised how much stronger these are than my last seats. tomorrow ill build the bases for em and then trim the little access hole in the seat. i put some foam in em jsut to see how snug they'll be and they're pretty large which will be nice to not be squished in all the time.

HUGE step forward, in making the boat actually move forward...
gimbal housing, trim rams, transom adapter, steering ram, fluid resivoir, and some electronic shifter thing. this thing looks MINT! bellows and carrier bearing look new.

you sound like someone that could tell me what goes where, and what im missing.
so far im out a trim pump, which im already looking into a few on ebay... the nuts that secure the gimbal to the transom assembly. the bolt that attaches the ram to the transom assembly. bolt/shaft that attaches ram to steering of gimbal. ill need an exhaust block off plate, the outdrive itself, shifter cable, bellhousing, flywheel, and coupler?
long list but doesnt seem too bad...
whats the deal with the electronic shifter plate and short cable/linkage?

Haven't been by the shop to get a picture for you yet, but its a nice piece, drive shower,1.50:1 gears, pretty much ready to roll, also have all the brackets for a 454a far as alternator, power steering pump, water pump.....
As for the short shift cable, this is called a shift interrupt system so you can actually shift the outdrive in and out of gear with load on the
Propeller.
I just need to figure out how to get this drive and crap to you...
$1200 and we'll call it square...
What else do you need? Probably have it.. Not on call anymore..

For the torque coupler, I would buy new. They don't cost too terribly much and are engine specific to the crank, you will need the studs and nuts though.
I have to look and see what bell housing I have, I can't remember if it an early or a late
Did you get any hardware with the inner transom bracket? Like two fiber washers, two long bolts, two bizarre looking springs?
I have the power steering pump and cooler you need.
I have the crank pulley, belts, alternator bracket (the alternator is on my Carrera motor), belt driven seawater pump, thermostat housing and hoses, basically all the crap from a Mercruiser 454 less torque coupler and alternator, including most of the Thunderbolt V ignition system should you decide to go that route.
An a different note, the shaft for the front of the rams is not a bolt, but has "E" ring clips just like the rear.
The transom assembly I told you I thought I could could get is not available, the guy that has them is in Afghanistan with the Army reserves, thankfully he is only going to move out the US troops :thumbup: ... Told him to bring me back a well used HUMVEE. :sly:
My wife may be going to Pasadena in May, I will let you know. (We will likely drive)...

Almost forgot, you have to use a pilot tool to align the engine to the outdrive, I have this tool and it is a good idea to get it aligned before bolting down the motor mounts...
You are welcome to use the pilot tool as long as I get it back. It should be the only "special" tool you need. ;)

by far the most difficult/painful thing ive ever done boating wise. some places the wood just falls off, other places its solid as a rock. used chisels, crowbars, my oscilating saw with a sharpened knife, orbital sander and flat sander. UGH its finally all clean and flat. time to cut up some plywood and mix up some epoxy and get this damn transom DONE!

test fit. tomorrow it gets epoxied in and tabbed around. ill router the edges as well to make the corners easier on the glass.

had to remove the tanks to get the transom in, and what do you know, they're imco's. one solid piece of aluminum, round and twisted to the contour of the outside of the hull. its art how these things are made...

3 layers, it'll be just under 2 1/4" when done. just bolted up right now it already feels like a tank. according to the interwebs for a mercruiser it needs to be between 2" and 2 1/4" maximum. which makes sense when i look at the gimbal housing studs. i have epoxy resin and filler for all the gaps along the bottom, as well as mat, biaxial cloth, and woven roving. i got some 2x4's to help spread the load on the bolts, as well as 4 more holes to drill for bolts, should make a more even "sandwich"

yeah its tough work. this lil guy with the scraper blade made short work of most of the wood that didnt just fall off. even after trying an impact hammer. that just made a bunch of noise and didnt do much...

layer #1 in. was going to do em all at the same time but with resin and mat it wouldve been a pita. i at least want the first one to be solid so im gonna wait an hour to let the resin kick especially with the temperatures and i used 205 (fast) hardener. then ill do last 2 layers, filler in the crevices and start on the floor and bed/tab that in. it should be a completely different boat after this weekend. im excited!

layer 2 and 3 in, tabbed in around the edges with 2 layers of mat. put in start of floor with some 404 filler and epoxy, waiting for it to bond for an hour and then ill tab that into the stringers, the transom, and the sides of the hull. its starting to look like a boat again!

rest of my progress. floor is in up to the deck, 2 part epoxy adhesive'd to the stringer and epoxied to the hull on the sides. ill go over it tomorrow morning with some roving and resin. transom is happy and tabbed in except for the very bottom, ill attack that tomorrow, epoxy likes to run and i didnt want a giant pool of resin at the bottom.

seat is deep enough with a 6 1/2" base under it. i might do 5" just to make the rear passengers feel a little deeper in the boat. but then 5" limits the speaker size i can put in it... hrmmm.

got about 400' of wire in today. they were out of black though. so ill have to pick up more of that. small gauge wire since I'll be running everything off of relays.

i do a 1:1 pump wise, and I have a good hour before it starts to get gummy. then in about 2 hours or so its solid, and in a good 4 hours its fully sandable @ 70* sitting in the sun. when i used the slow hardener it took a good overnight before the work was hard, plus i got a lot of runs with epoxy resin so the faster kick time helps with the pools in the bottom.

ordered 30ft x 8ft of 20oz grey carpet last night, gaffrig gauges, bilge pumps, bunch of misc odds and ends. i think the only things left at this point are trim pump, steering pump, throttle, shift, and steering... then upholstery.

i wouldve loved a bravo, but i also have a huge road in front of me. this will get me on the water and i can baby it for a while. then once the season is over ill swoop like an eagle on a bravo setup once the prices drop.
yeah i used interlux bilgekote. it flowed well and coverage was great with just brushing over a lightly sanded fresh epoxy.

i paid $150 for the hull. I have about $1000 in materials and parts so far (including carpet) and another $1500 in the drive itself. Figure $2k for upholstery work. I'll have a boat for under $5k. Which is TOTALY reasonable... and it will be all new for the most part. Some people pay $5k for worn out rotten floor boats. Its not rocket science work either anyone can cut some plywood and fiberglass work is like painting that gets rock hard. ANYONE CAN DO THIS!

tested my wiring panel with a 12v battery from my electric drill. worked like a charm on my first shot. time to trim it down, and slap it into the boat.

got a relay circuit for ignition, fuel pump, bilge pump, blower, lights. then provisions for trim up/down (trim pump has its own relays) and starter relay. then signal wires for tach, water temp, and oil pressure. fuel senders will go directly to the gauges. voltage will run off the gauge wiring, etc. cant think of anything im missing, but i can just add more relays and move the negatives to their own bar.

(gauges came with 2 sets, if someone wants a set of gaffrig gauges ill be selling the 2nd set, minus the speedo. so tach, water temp, oil press, volts, trim, all you need is a fuel gauge and they're about $40)

i was lookin for a vdrive cruiser but they're far and few, the ones that are for sale that are rigged projects still get buttloads of money for em. so yeah i kinda fell into this. at $150 it wasnt too shabby of a deal.

took the bow railing off so i could clean under the mounts. found a mountain of dirt under there. wetsanded the area and cut it with some compound.

gel coated the dash area. ugly woodgrain was poking thru the previous paint. you can see the holes im filling in the dash and deck, gotta sand those down and slap some gelcoat on those as well.

started messing around with the drive stuff. it appears i need to get the 2 bolts that go into the power steering ram and the pin that goes to the arm. im not really sure what all goes on to bolt this thing up. hrmm...

There should be two very odd looking fiber washers and two tightly coiled springs, these get put onto the two tabs on the inner transom plate between the transom plate and the bell housing...Literally NOTHING will line up if this is not done correctly..
Do you still need a pilot tool?
I can send mine with the PS pump, I will be at the shop later in the day tomorrow... If I don't get it back, I will stalk you forever... :sly:

i lost an ebay auction for a trim pump earlier today, i was bummed. at like 30 seconds left it was only at 40 bucks. then in the last 3 seconds it skyrocketed up to like 160 bucks. damnit!

picked up some more goodies. with dual batteries i dont think my motorola 35 amp alternator is gonna keep up. so picked up this 160amp instead. also grabbed a fuel pump, gonna go mechanical this time to cut down the noise. and then getting rid of my water pump since the drive has one inside the lower unit.

already had my first bilge spill. i got happy and went to make vroom vroom noises in the garage and turned the wheel back and forth. little did i know the power steering rack had fluid in it and it dumped it all over my nice clean white bilge. :banghead: but a little simple green, a couple swipes and it cleaned right up. having that shiney nice new bilge really makes clean ups easy.

there is still SOOOOO much to do... im at that part of the project where its all coming to an end and its getting stressful. little odds and ends are killing my progress. like trying to bolt up my fuel pump, i didnt realize i needed a fuel rod. :banghead: so now my fuel pump is just sitting on there waiting. little things like that are small, but they're huge setbacks... i cant run fuel lines, etc.

honestly im not sure. there is little to none for room inbetween the exhaust manifold and the power steering ram. theres no 4" for a pipe thats for sure. even if i did make elbows, etc to run it down and under the ram, i dont think it would fit. i could possibly put a little notch in it to clear the ram, but that seems kinda hokey to me.

Yeah I wasnt sure if it was the angle of the picture but it didn't look like there was room for any tubing that didnt have a crazy turn. have you thought about going to logs? Or turning your current set upside down!!

i did think about it. i also thought about chopping out the angle section of my riser and just going straight piped out the back above the water line. it'll be loud as hell though and there will be an exhaust tip to stub your leg and feet on right at the step. also it'll make my hatch a little wonky as well since ill need the additional space for the pipe.
its something ill have to play around with. i def dont want to switch to logs just to get out on the water because it involves putting a giant hole in my new transom that i might not even want...

picked some doo da's... put in the switches and ill toss the bow light on tomorrow morning. went to finish up mounting the gauges but it appears with the dash being 3/4" plus the trim rings that the brackets to hold them in, dont reach the studs. OF COURSE they dont reach. that would be easy. hah. now i gotta cut em down. grr.

went to cut the hole for the shifter/throttle. ill finish trimming up the hole so its nice and tight. but its a little too late to be grinding and cutting away on the hull. but with the placement of the seat, the steering wheel and the throttle will be a perfect reach. im excited.

fuel pump rod and fuel pump is in (haha i was trying to put it in the wrong hole until i looked it up and saw that u have to remove the little plug and it goes upwards against the camshaft. heh. then holding it in while putting in the pump was fun. read some hints and used a little piece of wire to hold it while i quickly smacked the fuel pump in the hole...
finished the shifter hole... now im gonna trim the edges and run a bead of white silicone around it to seal it up. then ill tap threads into the side of it to hold it in place.

workin on side panels... built little cubby holes into em that go 36" back to store a bunch of junk. some fun curves in there for the side of the boat, the V in the sides, and the way the hull gets narrower as it goes back. eff me that was a lot of measure twice, cut 15 times.

im going to go over the power steering ram with my exhaust. ill just have the little "droop" chopped out of it and then get the straight part welded back together straight. SHOULD clear the power steering ram...

The bracket bolts to a 454 head (L) and it has provisions for the alternator (Motorola, Delco Remy, Prestolite).

the switches and such were from west marine. i wanted to make sure they werent cheap automotive switches that rust, etc.

got the pump all clean, gonna make a little bracket to mount the pump to the transom since id rather not use the stock bracket and mount it to the floor... this will give me more room getting it out of the way.

The motors are replaceable, theoretically it should be ok, flush the pump with some diesel fuel, stinks, but works good, then use Marvel Mystery oil instead of DexronII. Really should be OK..

Blue sky (up), green grass (down), dash switch "blue" to trim limit switch from limit switch to up relay(blue), "trailer" straight to blue relay... Done. Be sure to power the pump up by putting the heavy gauge wires to the block ground and the starter lug, I hate it when people put them straight to the battery...
there should be a fuse holder on the pump that powers up the dash switch...
I can do these in my sleep... :o

Well, the "easy" fix is to add another SPST, or even a SPDT switch somewhere near the ignition switch. Rex makes a trim switch with the second switch... It's ugly though.
You could just bypass the limiter, if you have a gauge you will just need to educate yourself. :sly:

so up goes thru the limiter, im guessing limiting how much u can trim while driving so u dont lift the drive out of the water while under way or something stupid like that... then the trailer switch bypasses it to get the drive out of the way on the trailer.
sound like if you're not a moron u dont even need the limiter and its just more trouble than its worth... just dont hold down the up button while doing 100mph.

Yep, the trim sender is as straight forward as a fuel gauge, works the same way, the senders aren't very tough though. Just a carbon wiper.

Isn't there a limiter for disabling the starter in the 'trailer up' position? Its hard on u-joints in the trailer position. Its been a long time since I messed with a Merc.

gonna take it to my buddy sometime to have em welded up (for now im gonna clamp em to get me out on the water this season.) but im going to extend the inside section all the way down till like 2" from the tip. it'll "look" like wet exhaust but in reality it'll be like headers with a splash of water... and LOUD!

When i pulled my interior out i noticed i had two holes in the side of the top cap and looking at your pictures you have the same ones. Do you know what they were for? I circled them in red for you.

Nice build. Do I see this correctly. You are running s big block with an Alpha. Also was that boat set up originally with a sbc. Also wont the weight of a big block going to be an issue

yeh i know im going to have to baby the alpha with the big block. hammering the throttle would probably blow the upper into pieces. towing a tube is probably out of the question. but the cost of a bravo drive was out of the question for this build. a bravo drive alone would be 3-5k. im not the first one to toss a big block into a 21 bahner, it should be fine.

From the research i have done, you should be okay. Im running close to 450 horse through mine and no issues yet. I baby it out of the hole but once on plane i hammer it. I do keep the fluid fresh and change it often.
the big thing i have read has a lot to do with weight, yes the alpha is rated at 300 horse but behind what a 5-7K pound boat? 4K? etc? And from what ive read the bahners are weighing in right around 2500-3000 so it is light so less stress.
I can say i have ran mine at WOT for about 15 miles and no issues, no noises etc. Granted i dont have the torque you do but its no wimp. I think if you are smart and dont hammer out of the hole you will be fine. And i tow a 4 person tube quite frequently (heavy sob loaded up)

No disrespect at all. I was just wondering because I have a Baja/mercruiser project that I am getting back on. It is a 21 Ft. Baja, deep V. All the rotted stuff too including the stringers(just finished cutting them out, wow do I itch bad). I need an engine as it had a siezed v-6 in it with an Alpha one outdrive. I have found some good deals on 7.4 Mercruisers ready to go, less outdrive actually just about the same price as a 5.7 Mercruiser. I might just stick with the 5.7 though. It had tons and tons of wet foam under the floor that rotted everything. I am not going back with foam. I at least took 1000 lbs of wet wood, foam and flooring out of this thing.

as it is i have tach, speedo, oil press, water temp, fuel press, volt, trim... and then a gas level for each tank. the hour meter is built into the tach on the gaffrigs so i had an extra hole. i wasnt about to install a gaffrig clock. haha.

EDIT lol i re-read the thread, and it looks like the floor is just "glassed" in? Is it that way from the factory? How did you remove it just a BFH? And i figure that you just coat the plywood in resin a few times then glass it into the boat?

the original floor has a single layer of cloth over it with like 4" extended onto the hull. i used a little vibrating saw to make quick work of the cloth that holds it in and then it just pulls right out. a quick hit with the sander removed the cloth that was stuck to the hull.
when i put new in, theres 3 layers of mat holding it in on the top.. each one extending a couple inches longer than the first, and then its epoxied to the hull and the tops of the stringers on the bottom. i used a mixture of resin and west marine 404 filler which is used for bonds where strength is needed, not just a filler. both sides of the plywood are covered in resin for waterproofing. some people will do a full cover of mat/cloth on the top... but with 3/4 plywood i didnt need the added strength or the extra weight. its much stronger than the original floor that was in there previously.

my fuel level gauge is a newer gaffrig and my LED's dont seem to fit so i just need to trim them down a little bit. then ill toss em in. all the wires will be loomed up and then ill snug up the zip ties once everythings done.

Are you sure that cooling is going to work? I've never seen an io without a water pump. The drive doesn't seem to make that much pressure.

the alpha has a water pump/impeller inside of it, the bravo does not and requires an external pump.

Yeah I know, mine does too. But I still think you need to run a normal "automotive" style pump to recirculate it. I think mercruiser calls it a recirculation pump. Mine is an alpha, and it had one stock and I'm still running one along with a thermostat too. But idk for sure if its a required thing.
I've been researching swapping my manifolds for the newer style and going with thru hull and cooling is the big thing I have come across. In regards to water lines and etc.
In other words idk if the impeller in the drive is enough to keep the engine cool. But it might be. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Yeah! let me know how yours does and if it heats up. if it doesnt i may switch as well. With both pumps my engine hasnt seen over 150 yet

well my spacers showed up that i ordered online... so that i could move my power steering bracket out 3/8" to clear my exhaust. ill slap the same spacers onto my crank pulley and right now the alternator and crank pulley will be in alignment. but the power steering pulley sits forward and right now it has a car pulley for a "long water pump" setup. i need to find a crank pulley that puts the belt into a stock location... grr. anyone know where i can order a pulley from?

mounted up my berkeley drive and worked out my place diverter rams and pump. not sure how ill be able to put the swimstep brackets on and still fit it into the garage... we will see...

I found them at the long beach boat races not too long ago. they had a booth and the guy was straight forward and nice. prices were pretty much spot on with what I was getting elsewhere, even the guy that did my last boat. biggest reason i chose them was that i did NOT want that "cookie cutter modern design" that everyone is doing right now. Sure those shops can crank out an interior in like 3 days but every boat they do looks the same as they use the same templates for everything. you just pick what color "2 stripes" or else its a full custom job and I got quoted a fair price, but it was steep.

yes fulton makes swing tongue kits... but my competitive trailer has a 3.5" tongue width and they dont make a 3.5x4" kit... 3.5 is an odd size trailer tongue... i couldnt even find anyone that was willing to order a 3.5"x4"x1/8" thick rectangular steel... i dont even think the tongue is a solid piece if you look at the pic where i cut it off it looks like they just bend the C channel together and weld it down the middle on the top and bottom.
so i chopped it out, ill use this 3x4" steel and slide it up inside the trailer, weld it all the way around, inside and outside, etc. and it'll be good as new. ill use whats left over for a bow roller/stop thing and a winch on the front as well.

Looks sweet. My problem is that I have a surge brake hidden inside my frame I also have a competitive trailer so replacing my front tube to a smaller one don't think is possible

That was the best thing I added to my trailer comes in handy added about 18" to my swing when I tow also so I have more clearance. Looks good!!!!

Wow, that looks nice, but if i remember right, in the instructions somewhere, it said something about not having the tung tube more than either 18 or 24 inches when used with the swing away.

tongue progress. made the little hoob-a-joob that will hold the boat from moving forward. the little "bar" was a pain with my 18 footer, i couldnt imagine with a heavy 21. so i put a winch on it, ill thread the strap through a hole, it will go over the bolt at the top which has a sleeve on the inside that rolls, and then it will hook to the boat.

ill also put a little piece on it with a "V" that will hold the front of the boat below the bow eye...

cuz its not done yet. the boat wont move forward from the little rubber v block, and a chain, and the straps on the transom. ill also be putting some plate on the front of it to brace it. 3/16" steel it would take a house to bend it.

I'm referencing the 4 foot extension off the front of your trailer. Personally I would of extended the trailer itself another foot and a half somewhere in front of the axles but before where the two rails come together and then added a swing tung. The square tube stuck into the front of the trailer then welded just scares me. And who welded it up for you?

the steel tubing is slipped a good 12" inside of the trailer, welded all the way around in front, down the insides underneath, and then the end has a plate welded to that which is welded to the rest of the trailer as well. its not just butted up to the front of it.

im not a pro welder but i did a few tests with a piece of scrap tubing and tossed it onto a buddies press and nothing broke... we will see i guess. ^-^

I weld everyday for work and I can tell you right now that doesn't look safe and there is no way in hell I would tow that boat, on that trailer..... Looks to me like you are welding with flux core.in my opinion that shit is only good for repairing fences out in a field. Also of you are welding that with a 110 welder it is nowhere near hot enough to properly/safely weld that material. A job like this(major trailer modification) needs to be done by someone with experience. This isn't a dig on you at all, just would rather not potentially hurt yourself or others.....

To me those welds look as cold as ice ( not much penetration ) I would call a portable welder guy and have him check it out, it wouldn't cost much and the piece of mind is priceless.

Definitely flux core, which would work, but the key us penetration. I don't see any blueing of the steel around the welds anywhere, again not enough heat. With the added leverage of that extension it needs stronger welds.

I cannot see these pics form work as they are blocked out. So when others started talking about the welds I had to take a look. I have been welding for many years and those right there are cold welds, period. I know you stated you checked on a press but that is not going to emulate the constant bouncing and flexing of that tongue, the welds will most likely crack at some point. My suggestion would be to cross bolt your folding mechanism on both sides with ½-13 grade 8 bolts and nuts, maybe even 4 evenly spaced out pattern. Or have a certified (albeit sometimes not always better) welder grind off those welds and do it right. This is a huge liability item. As stated before I do a lot of welding but will not touch hitches or trailers (I will add accessories or brackets though). I know my welds are sound and will hold up but don’t want the liability and the aggravation. Again as others have said, this is not a ding against you. It does however require action.

BYJust a quick story.
About 1997-98 I had a customer call me to ask if I could weld a crack in a trailer. At the time I had a structural welding certification (that has not been updated in years).
I told him I could take a look and asked him to bring it by for an estimate. After looking at the trailer, I told him it looked to me like it had been repaired a couple of times in the past. He said he had been having the issue for a couple of years.
After providing him with an estimate for replacing some fatigued steel, adding some structural strength to the front frame rail connectors and reinforcing the tongue tube, he thought it was way to much money (his words). And was on his way, I had informed him he may want to pursue getting a replacement trailer a soon a possible and not to tow the broken one very far or fast.
He took it to another shop and they told him the trailer needed to be replaced. He ultimately ended up having a local shop simply weld up the crack.
That same month, the trailer frame broke at the cross member that tied the tongue tube into the rails and the rails dug into the highway at speed and literally destroyed the trailer, the boat and his Toyota 4 Runner.
No one was hurt, but think about a busy highway. This could have, maybe even should have been catastrophic.
The only reason I knew about the accident was the California Highway Patrol paid me a visit because of an estimate in the wrecked boats glove box. There were no charges filed to anyone, but thinking that if someone was injured or worse, there would have been criminal charges filed.
Take my advice on this and 86 that trailer and find the proper one. That rig is going to be over the 3500 pound mark and should have two 2000 pound axles and brakes.
I would hate to see all your hard work ruined, but even worse, see someone hurt.
I can find you a proper trailer in a day or two that won't break the bank.
I really did try to bite my tongue on this. The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me when other members began to speak out,I thought it would be irresponsible to not speak out.
This project is awesome, but this little shortcut scares me.
Please take this as constructive.

im all for advice. however i DID look around for trailers for about the 6 months that ive had this project in motion, and most importantly a trailer that can fit into my garage. this boat will NOT be sitting outside.
what i found in the 21 range is a bunch of shitty trailers or outrageously expensive trailers like "extreme." (hell its hard driving thru havasu springs and seeing a bunch of nice trailers just sitting there for months, haha) my competitive is built 500x nicer than most and the steel is thicker than most of the ones that I came across. For example I looked into this one below but it doesnt fit into my garage id have to chop the whole front of it off... and then I would be in the situation i am now. A possible weak point where it gets put back together.

I picked up my boxed, disc brake Extreme for the recycle value from a storage auction.
I am literally in it $75.
It can with a 22' Cobalt Condessa that I sold for $500. That being said, my trailer cost me nothing, I actually made money on the deal.
I know where a late model MB Sports is sitting and it has a detatchable tongue. I will hit them up next week.

i didnt want to do yellow because i dont think the boat will stay yellow much longer. thats next years project. cap and paint. but i shouldve done a pattern or something into the middle part at least.
our friends tige has this cool "X" pattern in some spots. im thinking something like that in a stripe down the middle or something just to break up the boring. maybe next year. oh well.

You are going to need at least a 23" pitch prop..... rpm does way more damage than torque on an alpha. You really need 1.50:1 gears.
I have some props if you want to experiment.

ive been told by everyone that torque will break my drive. ill be whipping up a shower for it to help with cooling. id love to swap to 1.50 gears, i couldnt find an upper with those gears when i was putting things together. how much of a different will .12 make in rpm? 2-300? i already know i wont be blowing doors off and that i will need to baby it.

Ultimately as long as the rpm stays below about 4600 rpm and the prop never leaves the water you should be cool.
The 1.6:1 ratio makes a huge difference. Calculate it out in percentage.
I can hook you up with the correct ratio, just need a little time to scare one up.
I have two Bravo I drives sitting here at the shop.
All we need to find is a transom assembly.

The same speed with a 21" the same speed would yield a 5100 RPM. No bueno.

Is that really close? It's a big block... my 21 with a bb/dominator does 58 at 5100. I would think that boat with a drive on it propped right would do well into mid 60s.
My dads old hallett 330hp bb (Bravo 1 though) was faster than mine at his 4700 rpm. Mirage 3 blade stainless 21.

Edit: I suspect this thing will want about a 25" pitch depending on how much grunt is available.

Not at all. It depends on the HP, I was simply using the examples as a comparison because of the question that was asked on the RPM difference.
My small block powered Carrera with an Alpha I gen 2 will SMOKE a BBC jet in a 21'.... You just have to keep in mind that my mouse has eaten a Rat. ;)

If he were to run a 25" pitch cupped Mirage with the same 1.62:1 ratio, the expected speed at 4600 RPM would be really close to 60 MPH, if the gear ratio was a 1.50:1, same prop same motor, the expected speed would be closer to 64MPH. It is all dependent on how much horsepower is being generated. If the motor wont pull the prop, the speed will fall off dramatically.
Am I making sense? ultimately I am thinking the prop choices are going to be limited by the lower gear ratio, also the ratio is low enough that the torque increase will be an issue making it more prone to breakage.
Never did I indicate that this boat wont surpass 55 MPH, but I bet I'm pretty close with saying 60. :)

just a lot of little things to take care of right now... ugh.
tidied things up today... ran spark plug wires and cut and crimped em. had to move my trim pump for the fuel filter. i had nowhere else to put it... so that meant plugging up all the holes with epoxy and repainted the bilgekote on the transom in that area. ran fuel lines, put on the an fittings, tightened everything up, water lines are all done, etc. engine cranks just needs the fuel turned on. id give it a start tonight but it would probably wake up the whole neighborhood.

its called "bilgekote" and its about $35 a quart. it took about a quart to do my transom, sides, bilge, etc 2 coats. i brushed it on and it lays down flat and has a nice shine to it. if i took my time and sanded everything down smooth it would be an almost flawless finish. it has some pretty good fumes to it so make sure you use ventilation. it handles oil spills VERY well with no staining and it sticks to just about anything. i picked it up at west marine.
ive also heard/seen people using plain ol rustoleum in a can (not rattle can), thinning it out a little and spraying it out of a gun... its cheap too and you can grab it at home depot.

water was turned on to the drive... you can see the hose in the first part of the video to the little clamp/earmuffs. it never came out the exhaust though as the motor and manifolds are empty from sitting/install. even with my jet drive or the neovane 755 it took a while before the exhaust sees any water.
im curious if the alpha pump will be enough to cool the motor or not... im gonna pull the water line from the "t" and put it into a bucket and see how much water the drive actually pumps.

The drive can support well over 400hp. The system is designed to literally bypass about 40% of the flow to keep the exhaust cooled.
The drives impeller needs to be changed annually, not that tough to do. Just revenger it has to be in forward gear to put it together correctly.

those dana tabs sure are pretty! I ran into a tough spot when the wife demanded that I put a swim step on the boat. I personally hate them. So we reached a compromise when I showed her these rather than a step with a little foldy down ladder. They'll be dual purpose. ^-^ At least thats how I convinced her.

first coat of many of zinc chromate. anytime you paint bare aluminum you need to primer with ZC. its the only way paint actually sticks to it. regular etching primer sucks.

ill probably just grab some metal from this place in long beach and tack everything in place and then call up the guy that came over to reweld my trailer tongue. he had a porta welder on a truck and did everything for a fair price. the front mounts on the bunks are bolted in and are adjustable so i just need the rears redone. then i want to put a roller in the front for the bow.

ahh. i have a sunset harbor about a mile away from my house. i dont feel like driving an hour or more to a lake just to find out i have a tiny leak. for all i know i could put it in the water for 30 seconds and need to pull it back out and go home.

it floats! i had a little leak from around the bilge plug... i dont think it fits very well so im gonna ditch the cheapo brass sleeve and rubber plug for one of those stainless screw in type deals... i had one on my 18 and it was nice. other than not having the power steering hooked up everything worked. i need to adjust the shift linkage stuff and make some sleeves and use larger diameter bolts so that everything is nice and tight... it has a little bit of play in it right now and i cant really get it to go into reverse from the controls, but if i put the control in reverse and BARELY tap the shift linkage with my finger it drops right into reverse... i dont even have the ignition kill switch thing plugged in (ill hook it up soon), so thats good that the drive shifts easily. other than that it was smooth sailing. i was a little worried when i first started it up because it had been sitting for SOOOO long and the block still had water in it... once the water cycled through it it dumped a *MASSIVE* cloud of rusty water into the harbor. WHOOPS! haha.

yeah 1.62. I was going to do bravo one 24p but a LOT of people on RDP pm'ed me saying i would break the alpha if i did that.
what was your cruising rpm and top end rpm/speed? im hoping to cruise around 3k and with the gear hopefully can be between 4.6-5k.

When i first built my 350, i borrowed a friends bravo one 24P 4 blade, it was WAY to much for my engine combo. WOT RPM was about 4200 but no matter what i did i couldnt blow the thing out in turns...
With a 21p i cruise around 3000-3500 give or take. Tops out at about 5400 (give or take). Going down river in blythe with half of one tank and by myself with a pretty empty boat she ran 71. I dont know the RPM just had it trimmed up as high as possible without slipping and watching where i was going
But in all reality with adequate fuel, people on board, ice chest etc. I can get about 62-65 out of it if i am trimmed up and runnning hard. But it does 50-55 easily and gets there pretty quick.
For local lakes i run the 19pitch 3 blade i have. Itll run 60 with this prop and probably more. But i run out of room in perris with it, it has a hell of a lot of torque and a great holeshot with the 19pitch. Perfect for tubing/skiing.
This year ill be out at the river for easter. should have my through transom finished by then too. Hopefully will gain another couple mph with the 21 pitch.

Yeah i agree.... I only run the 19 for local lakes. My tube is a Big ass 4 person tube that takes a lot to get moving with 4 grown (not exactly skin and bones) people on it so ill run the 19 with it just for the extra oomph.
I mainly run the 19 locally because this is where we tend to use the tube, as well as its a cheapie prop that i dont care if i hit on something in perris or elsinore where i cant see anything.
And we all know that the local lakes dont seem to have the best class of people, so i dont care if my cheapie 19pitch stainless prop gets ripped off. Id be pissed if my new 21 did though
I will say that at the river the 21 stays on 99.99% of the time, ive only changed it once when i spun my old 21. For me the 21 will pull a skier, wakeboarder, single tube and truth be told the 4 person tube just fine (havent tried it). And I can make it from needles to havasu springs on one tank of fuel.
If i remember correctly crusing speed with the 21 is right at the 30-40 mph range. The 23 was a little faster and saved a little fuel but to me it was negligible, and i like having the ability to spin it pretty high when/if i want to go fast. Not very often but has been known to happen.
I think that a 23 on your drive will be pretty close to a 21 on mine because of the gear ratio change. I think it should be pretty much perfect for you. You have more torque than i do but i think im making more top end hp so thats why i can swing it to the higher r's

those 2 you posted make more sense to me... the part where the nut goes locks into the actual hub connected to the spline... theres no way for the nut to back out once the tabs are locked down. if i get a "aft washer" (i went around to a few stores today, none had one in stock) theres nothing really preventing the nut from backing off...

That hub looks like the one I had in the prop I spun. I don't believe they are replaceable. You will have to get an aft washer to run it.
If you spin it the prop is basically trashed. Some prop shops can replace them but I think its like 125-150. You can provably find a used prop in like new condition for 150-200 with a replaceable hub.
Just an FYI. I carry extra prop hardware (nut, tab washer, aft washer) and an extra prop at all times. Along with the tools to change it. I've only needed to once and it was a PITA in water in the evening with hardly any light.
If I were you I'd look for an aft washer. Run the prop to see if you like it. Then look for a prop with a replaceable hub and keep this as the backup prop.
Mine spun running up to Jack Smith from pirates cove with a very loaded boat and running almost wot.

started tearing into the trim pumps for the k-planes... they were looking pretty sad as whoever owned em before me mustve painted them with a brush or something. so its strip time, and then once they're clean ill hit em up with primer and a coat of mercruiser black paint.

the electric motors themselves werent too bad. brushes and the surface they sit on was clean... but there was some surrounding rust. ill clean em out and hit all the contact points with some fine sandpaper.

aircraft stripper makes short work of any paintjob or finish. you MUST be careful with this stuff. if you brush it on and it splatters in your eye you will be in a world of pain. even a splatter on your arm will be burning like hell in a matter of seconds. luckily it just dilutes with water if you do get any on you.

the biggest problem i would have with it, is making it modular enough to fit everyones needs and building it in such a way that anyone could understand "what to do next." gauges are in all different configurations, and depending on engines all the senders are in different places. providing all the necessary connectors and leaving enough extra to reach everything without it getting too messy.

if i had to do it all over again and didnt already have 4" holes going thru my transom, i would get some S tubes and make it exit below the water line. dont get me wrong i love the sound of a motor... but my boat is LOUD. i have another thread somewheres where people are mentioning that pointing my exhaust towards the water and being so close to the water actually makes the sound waves bounce off the water and go everywhere. did i mention its LOUD? theres a ton of water coming out of the exhaust. I'm looking into slip-in mufflers now.

in with the new. i needed something smaller so i could fit the 2 trim pumps for my k-planes. not only is it half the size but its now covered in case it gets a sprinkle. im also able to push the LED's to override the dash in case i want to turn something on. in the pic below the ignition, bilge pump, and blower are on. relay #2 is the starter and #5 is lights.

theres an electronics store by my house in huntington beach called JK Electronics. I got the box, relay mount, leds, and fuses. and i ended up finding the bosch relays at a swapmeet in long beach. bosch relays are hard to find and MOST places will sell you the china knockoffs. The switches came from West Marine as I wanted something brass/stainless that would hold up to the elements and not turn to rusted crap like most vatozone/pepboys junk.

thanks to morepower for the hookup on the wheels. they're at the tire store now having new rubber put on em. and i paid em an extra $5 a wheel to scrape the inside of em out as they had a good solid 1" thick coating of wheel grease. good progress on the triple axle conversion. I just need the leafs and hangers at this point.

trailer is on jacks and so far its been a pain in the azz to get the suspension undone to where i can pull the axles out and unbolt the skids/steps. every bolt is rusted solid and i ended up just cutting most of them. i have one side off and i didnt feel like hammering out the shackle pins at 3am so i called it a night. ill bust that out in the morning and head over to the trailer store and the metal shop to pick up some angle.

finally got the fenders and step/skids off with the suspension. the rear bolts were just completely rusted. tried a cutting wheel but there just wasnt any room. so i broke out my giant cheater bar and broke the bolts off with my big dog crab arms.

all the bolts are greasable with zirc fittings and the equalizers have nylon inserts. no more squeaks and it should last a little longer with the salt dips.

monday im picking up a pair of 10' 4x2 angle and then im gonna mock it all up. i did a quick measure on the floor and it put my end axles at 68" apart which gives me a good 4-6" between each tire and to the fenders. perfect! the guy at the trailer store wasnt of much help dimensions wise. im not sure if i want to put steps back on it or not. i like the way trailers look with floating fenders but getting in/out of the boat on teh trailer will be a complete pain in the ass...

finally got the fenders and step/skids off with the suspension. the rear bolts were just completely rusted. tried a cutting wheel but there just wasnt any room. so i broke out my giant cheater bar and broke the bolts off with my big dog crab arms.

all the bolts are greasable with zirc fittings and the equalizers have nylon inserts. no more squeaks and it should last a little longer with the salt dips.

monday im picking up a pair of 10' 4x2 angle and then im gonna mock it all up. i did a quick measure on the floor and it put my end axles at 68" apart which gives me a good 4-6" between each tire and to the fenders. perfect! the guy at the trailer store wasnt of much help dimensions wise. im not sure if i want to put steps back on it or not. i like the way trailers look with floating fenders but getting in/out of the boat on teh trailer will be a complete pain in the ass...
I didn't want any steps on mine either.
More importantly, I didn't want people who don't know shit, climbing all over my trailer.
What the hell do I know, I'm just a paying customer.
If people want in, pick them up at the dock where they can safety climb DOWN INTO the boat.

1. Tows like its on rails on long hauls...
2. Absorbs bumps in the road better which is easier on hulls, which is really nice for me since I dont tie my boat down.

i would tap and die them but i cut a few of em because the bolts were completely rusted after 30 years and even the almighty pb blaster and a torch wouldnt bust em loose. i tried wire wheeling the rust off them but no dice.
the trim tabs are next on the list. the boat and trailer are on jackstands in the garage right now and i cant get to the transom.

just finishing bolting everything up and getting it all aligned. goddamn theres a lot of long ubolts to tighten. then i gotta trim them all. but its sitting on the suspension now and off the jackstands. so far so good. all the equalizers are looking pretty level and thats a good sign, and a good amount of weight on the tongue. next is drilling the holes to bolt the skids to the trailer, and then im going to build the mounts for the fenders.

hatch progress... not much. notice the front is at an angle and the rear is flat. so the side pieces have a twist in them. complicted by the fact that the front of the hatch is a good 3" wider than the rear AAAND nothing in a boat is square.

little hatch progress..
laminated 3 sheets of plywood together with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth. then ill do a final layer across the top and on the inside of it. should be strong enough to drive a car on when its done.

honestly im not really sure... it was whatever i had leftover from my nursery project... i used it to cover the walls when i was putting in the wainscoting. its super thin, maybe 1/8" thick. i dont really think it matters. it had 0 strength before the fiberglassing and now its freakin solid.

the 110s tabs are pretty sweet in that they have the pumps attached to them... having 3x trim pumps not only is heavy but a lot of hydraulic hoses, wiring, etc back there...

now to wire em up with some relays (put em on an amp meter and they dont pull more than ~25 amps when running so no need for the big solenoids like the regular trim pumps) and then integrate it into my existing wire loom.

Don't think about it, just do it when the forecast is decent. My buddies uncle made it there and back in a 14ft aluminum. And depending on the swell direction, Catalina will block the swell for you.

My only worry would be getting there and the sea kicks up and I'd be stuck. The catalina express takes like 45 minutes and it goes what... 20mph? Id imagine a regular boat like ours would be 30 mins if that each way. Hell those catalina ski racers do it there and back in like 40 minutes doing 75mph on average.

yup thats pretty much how it all is plumbed up. in the few times i have had it out, theres been 0 cooling issues. The stock water pump and thermostat housing is basically to recirculate water in the system that is already warmed up. It does run a little cool but at the same time my oil temps get hot enough to see whatever moisture is in the oil system to turn into steam out of my valve cover breathers. everything is -10 (1/2") hose and there is PLENTY of water coming out the back to cool the exhaust.

ahh thats pretty cool lookin. we're gonna skip this season and head out first thing next season. i just gotta figure out where im gonna put all these toys in the boat. haha. im "toying" with the idea of cutting it down the middle and turning it into an open bow. thats why i never installed my floor all the way up to the front of the boat. it stops maybe 3-4' under the deck.

I want to convert mine badly, but dont have the cajones. lol
I store that under the bow with the noodles. But its inflatable and its one of those "spring floats" so it folds up nicely. I always have an inflator under one of the seats so that makes it quick and easy to inflate.
For storage i use under pass seat, and rear set. I also have a big rubbermaid tub in the engine compatment on the pass side. Not to much goes under the bow except the ez up and chairs skis, etc

yah. im wondering if i convert it to an open bow, and switch to a belly tank, i could get more storage on the sides, speakers, pockets, etc. i dunno what id really do with a ski locker. none of us actually ski and if we ever wanted to the mother in law has a wakeboard boat with plenty of storage on their rack for that stuff.

Have you been in any rough water with yours yet? I'd be worried about the strength. My bow Flexes a lot when in rough water you can watch it. Kinda freaky but no stress marks.
I would think converting it would make it a little more structurally sound

yeah mine flexes too... but in my tahiti i added a bulkhead and it got rid of all of that. so its either i add a bulkhead or make it an open bow.

all good points... and in all honesty a single axle will carry the load of most boats as long as its properly sized. my competitive trailer's suspension was originally set up for the 18 foot tahiti that was on it before... so needless to say the ride was absolutely terrible when i put the 21 on it. bouncy and the axles were in the completely wrong spot, if i filled the gas tanks the tongue would come off the ground by itself, so adjustment was in order regardless. i liked the looks of the triple and aside from the little 1/2 mile jump to the local harbor our trips are all from OC to havasu... a long haul. my first boat the 18' tahiti originally came with a single axle. it swayed around while towing... so i found the competitive tandem. it was great. but towing with the triple is a whole different ballgame so far. first off, lets get this out of the way... turns just plain suck. the axles/tires are all fighting with each other and you can hear it drag the wheels. but ive never had a trailer tire actually "wear out" they almost always go bad from weather/time and crack. For straight hauls, i dont even notice its back there. it just carries the load perfect. also with the triple the rear axle is at the very back of the trailer so going up my driveway it doesnt drag anymore. the suspension on the tandem was all original, old and rusty so i was going to replace it all anyways. also i was able to find the chrome fenders and donor axle fairly easy and super cheap. competitive used a "sled" design with 2 pieces of angle that bolt to the overall frame of the trailer so upgrading was easy with little modification to the trailer frame itself.

i got it up to 50 on the speedo and the nose was buried into the water and i didnt feel like going any further i was barely in the 4k. i posted a thread on "the other forum" about how to trim an i/o properly just waiting for a time to actually try it.

it was more of a getting on plane should the drive be fully down, at what point do you raise it up? whats the limit to raising it without and issue of the drive shaft/ujoints/bellows in regards to how the boat is riding? I also have trim tabs, so I hear those can be put full down to make the boat plane faster at a slow speed, yadda yadda. i did get some tips for calibrating my trim gauge with the sender and possibly to move it closer to me so i can visually see it as its somewhat important. right now its at the furthest point away from me and without trim bezels at an angle its almost impossible to see it where i sit.
as of right now i pushed the gogo stick forward until i hit 50 and then backed off with the drive fully down and the nose was sitting pretty low in the water. i didnt want to stuff it or hook something and get pitched.

yup last month. broke a timing chain guide. so replaced cam phasers, VCT solenoids, timing tensioners, timing guides, timing chains, crank timing sprocket, head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, serpentine belt, thermostat, etc. it was basically an overhaul minus the shortblock, which SHOULD be good for 200-300k in itself. its all the valvetrain that sucks balls on these motors. i had put it all back together 2x and then realized that the "R" & "L" on the cam phasers are from drivers perspective so timing was 180* out. Took it to ford and they said i needed a whole new motor at $8100. tried a third time and realized the mistake, fired up on the first try and runs fine since. *knocks on wood*

Bimini's are awesome man!
whne you get yours done check out having it done in mesh. Ours is that way and its really nice, still provides the shade, but breathes and doesnt bake you under neath it. Also breathes while you are moving

yeah i just hate putting more holes in the boat. plus i had to remove all my seats, side panels, etc to get to the inside of the gunnels so I could do SS bolts with nylock nuts. I'm not a fan of screws for bimini's (or screws in general on boats). Gives me a chance to also put in a set of new gas fllls i have that are polished up and pretty.
